Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
Date: April 30th, 2003 Wednesday. Time: 2:39 pm Being at the center, walking and talking with a group of friends... something like this shouldn’t have felt so mundane. Chatting about school, raving about the latest hits in music, discussing books, sharing life experiences, and other things -- all the while being able to do this over break, and while on a trip, too. This was the ideal life of a high school girl, right? Having a large circle of friends, never needing to sit alone... and yet, somehow, it still felt bland.
It wasn’t like this was boring or anything. These moments were often fun, but in the end, the conversations were empty and pointless, and the people... well, they were fine. They were her friends, after all. They were nice friends who talked about nice things. Although, that was the problem, wasn’t it?
It shouldn’t have been a problem, but it was. Tomoyo found herself wishing for the company of laid back fools like Sunohara and Tomoya. Well, no. Not Sunohara. Just Tomoya would be fine.
Maybe she was spoiled by the occasional company of the two of them.
Could these people really be called her friends if she felt this way about them?
Tomoyo stopped in front of the building’s entrance, and in doing so, all her friends stopped as well, with less than a second of delay. It was as if they couldn’t go on without her or something. With loyal friends like these, Tomoyo knew she should be more grateful. Before this year, she didn't have many people who she could call friends. Despite that fact, she still couldn't manage to feel that way.
“I need to pack my things for tomorrow,”
she told them. They expressed their disappointment and said they had plenty of time later to pack, and that Tomoyo should spend the last full day having fun. Still, Tomoyo insisted on needing to leave them. Yes, she knew she had plenty of time, but she couldn’t walk with them while being reluctant about it. That didn’t seem fair for them, nor was it enjoyable for her. Hoping to appease them, she said, “Sorry. This was fun, though. I’ll catch up with you all for dinner.” That worked. Tomoyo found herself walking alone, looking up at the ceiling. Perhaps this was all she needed – some quiet time. Her room was all the way on the other end of the hallway, and already she was feeling calmer. She didn’t normally get exhausted around people, but the whole situation of being on a trip and living with or being surrounded by fellow students for two days was more tiring than she ever expected it to be. "You shouldn't be doing this Aizawa-chan." Came a worried voice. It's target, however, had her eyebrows furrowed dangerously low. She was ruining everything! Her plan was barely into it's first stage, and already that no good thug was meddling, unintentionally or not! It made Shou fume. Accompanied by two of her friends, her kimono skirt, and open jacket flapped as she thundered down the halls.
"I'm not gonna let that... Harpy ruin his chances!" She spat back, in a hushed tone that was as final as any shout. Yesterday had been going well for her. She'd (hopefully) sown the seeds of interest in Nagisa, perhaps cajoling her almost, into asking the infamous Tomoya Okazaki to be her boyfriend. Of course, this would crush anyone else who had their eyes on him. One girl in particular. That, however, was of little concern to the junior. It was all part of her fiendish plot. With Tomoya out of the picture, the older Fujibayashi sister would be looking for a shoulder to cry on. Knowing her cousin, he'd be powerless to such a sight. When coupled with his attraction for her, she'd see how right he was for her, and they'd finally get together. Shou's work would be done.
Then... It happened. She had to get herself involved. Koji was dragged back to his room in the evening, slightly dazed, and showing the early signs of bruising. He'd explained to the rampaging Aizawa, that he'd gotten into a bit of a scrap with some bullies he had... Dealt with, in his own way, in the past. They had joined forces against a common enemy. Whilst Shou was confident that her cousin was more than capable to handle himself, that girl had to stick her nose where it didn't belong. Tomoyo Sakagami. The junior infamous for beating the biker gang from a local school to a pulp with one, powerful kick. She'd come to Koji's rescue, and, from what Koji had told her, "eased the pain a little". Though how, it was clear the way he was speaking about her meant one thing. Admiration. Attraction. It just wouldn't do! This vile harlequin was stealing him away. Just because she had a pretty face didn't give her leave to go snatching up boys when she felt like it. So, she decided to teach her a lesson. It would be foolish to go into her room and start a brawl. No, Shou would use her verbal arsenal to breach her defenses, and utterly annihilate her.
"I think it's a bad idea too Shou-chan." Her other friend announced. Shou rolled her eyes. She wasn't in the least bit intimidated by Tomoyo. She was mad at Koji too, for falling under her spell. Honestly. Just because some grey-haired witch blinked her big puppy dog eyes at him, didn't mean he should start pursuing her as a romantic interest. That said, he only shared a small fraction of the blame. He had said all he needed to say the previous night. Now it was her turn. After using her unique verbal skills, and colorful vocabulary to obtain it's location, Shou had marched straight up, friends in tow, to Tomoyo's room, and began to knock, loudly at that, on her door.
"Sakagami! Open up! I want to speak with you right this instance!" She barked, brow twitching. She bit her lip, all the while nursing her wrath, keeping it well-stoked. If Tomoyo didn't open her door, then Shou would have to keep hammering on it until she got annoyed.

Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
Quiet time. What a joke.
It’d been such a relief to close the door behind her, shutting herself in so she could have some Tomoyo-time to herself (her roommate, Furukawa, wasn't in) and hopefully get some packing done. Closing the door, however, was about the only thing she managed to do, besides bringing her small travel bag out of the closet. She barely had touched any of her belongings yet, and already there was someone knocking on the door. Tomoyo’s first thought was that it was someone wanting to visit her in her room. The mere idea of it was tiresome; she’d just managed to break away from her group, and even that had been difficult. Still, it wasn’t a bad sort of tiresome. It would be ironic, and a situation like that would be laughable.
But when she realized the knocking was incessantly loud, Tomoyo was certain that this wasn’t a friendly visitation. In fact, the noise couldn’t even be called knocking. It was as if the person on the other side of the door was intending to break the door down.
“Sakagami!” a shouting girl’s voice was blasting its way through, “Open up! I want to speak with you right this instant!”
Scowling, the agitated junior dropped her bag on the floor and strode over to the door, her long silver hair flowing behind her. What was this person’s problem? Whoever it was, they could at least be more civil about whatever they needed. The way they were talking... no, yelling, sounded like they had a bone to pick with her.
Clatter!
She slid the wooden door open with one swift motion. She hadn’t been expecting any specific kind of person, but the person standing there had such a petite physique that the idea of the girl making a big disturbance was almost unfathomable.
She was a thin girl with dark brown hair tied up into a ponytail. Her features looked vaguely familiar, but Tomoyo was certain she’d never once met the girl, but despite that, the girl was angry about something; this much was apparent in her unpleasant expression. There were two other girls (probably her friends) behind her, but they appeared to be much more mild-mannered.
Tomoyo sported an unamused face, her intense blue eyes appraising the culprit. She wasn’t only vexed by the ruckus, but she was also baffled. This person was being loud, obnoxious even, and Tomoyo likely wasn’t the only person being bothered by her, but everyone else in the inn, too.
For what reason was this infuriated stranger here? Tomoyo searched her memory for any incident that could have provoked the girl to seek her out, but Tomoyo couldn’t recall any such time. How did this girl even find her? Had she been followed?
She couldn’t help but feel a little sorry for the girl’s friends. She even sent them a pitying glance. How could they put up with this kind of behavior? Again, her eyes landed on the deceivingly delicate-looking hurricane-of-a-person. Tomoyo’s overbearing gaze shot through her.
“Do you need something?”
It was the voice of someone with thin patience, masked behind a polite voice. She was willing to listen to the brown-haired girl, because really, Tomoyo had no idea why she was here. She just didn’t have a lot of tolerance for people like her. It was pitiful to think this wasn’t the first time she had to deal with people like this. It wasn’t the first time by a long shot. "Shou-chan... Please just leave it alone." One of Shou's friends added, expressing their concern. The two were clearly feeling that their vertically-challenged companion was biting off a lot more than she could chew. Considering to whom she was glaring up at venomously, those feelings were not misplaced. Shou's thin eyebrows descended further down her face, as her small hand came up, to point an equally-minute, accusing finger at her fellow junior.
"As a matter of fact, I do." She sneered, wrinkling up her face. She had no qualms about her rude behavior. After all, it was Sakagami's fault. She held the blame. She was going to be told. She needed to be told. Shou had made herself as large as possible for one of her stature and physique. She looked more like a little girl throwing a tantrum, than a young woman butting heads with another over a boy. In this situation however, neither were fighting over said boy. One was his cousin, concerned that some pretty face would ruin said cousin's chances with a girl he truly cared for. It had severely ticked the brunette off about how indifferent Tomoyo seemed about the idea. How casually she opened the door.
"Stay away from Koji-nii."
As concerned as her friends were, they merely had to look at Tomoyo, to know this was not their place, nor their fight. The infamous, or famous Sakagami was perfectly capable of fighting on her own. Be it verbally or physically. So, with a hushed, hurried word of apology, Shou's duo of friends departed quickly and quietly, leaving only the two combatants left.
"You hear me? He doesn't need you sniffing around him. He loves Fujibayashi-senpai. So you stay away from him. Don't think he'll fall for you just because you flutter your eyelashes at him or anything. I refuse to let you screw up his chances!" Shou exploded, raising her voice. This was something she felt very passionately about. Her face was going red, and her voice started to lose its strength.
"He doesn't need you," Shou repeated, her eyes glassing over with tears, "he deserves to be happy. J-just... Leave him alone, or I won't.. i won't forgive you."
She sniffled furiously. It was angering and upsetting her greatly. Sakagami Tomoyo, a name as synonymous with trouble, as Okazaki's was for delinquency. She was trouble. She attracted the wrong kind of attention. Shou felt that Koji didn't need that. He'd jump in to defend her, and possibly get hurt badly. He'd be fine with Fujibayashi Kyou. She'd humble the boy. Shou kept telling herself that he deserved it after all the good he had done for other people, and never once thinking about himself or his well-being. Two lines of tears streaked down Shou's face. It just wasn't fair! Why did Koji have to be such an idiot? Why couldn't he think of himself, just for once?

Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
A frown formed on Tomoyo’s face as she stood there, her hand resting on her hip. If an outsider was watching the scene, they’d see a one-sided struggle. “Shou-chan”, as the aggressor’s friends called her, was just that – the aggressor. Tomoyo couldn’t be called the victim here, because she didn’t look like she was being victimized. She only looked bothered, pestered by the sudden conflict unfolding right before her eyes. Tomoyo didn’t blow people off unless they were truly irksome -- people like Sunohara for example, as well as the persistent sports members who tried to draft her into their teams. However, Shou’s attitude was setting her close to that level.
But then...
“Stay away from Koji-nii.”
Tomoyo’s eyes widened and she let her hand fall to her side.
What...?
Those words were shocking. She never would have expected that to be the problem. She also didn’t understand why this Shou, who seemed to be related to Koji in some way by the way she spoke of him, was making such a request. She didn’t understand at all. Even Shou’s friends appeared to have more awareness of the situation than Tomoyo did, seeing as how hurriedly they left the scene. Why was she being told this?
The answer soon became clear.
“He loves Fujibayashi-senpai. So you stay away from him. Don’t think he’ll fall for you just because you flutter your eyelashes at him or anything.” Shou’s voice had reached an explosive volume by this point. “I refuse to let you screw up his chances!”
For some reason, Tomoyo felt an ache in her heart. It wasn’t because of her situation -- being falsely accused of trying to become close to Koji, being accused of trying to steal him away -- that she was feeling this way. She was disturbed that one would even think she was pursuing Koji.
Instead, her heart ached for Shou. She felt sorry for her. The brunette couldn’t be more misinformed about the situation... and she was making a huge deal of it, too. At first, Tomoyo thought Shou’s reddened face was due to anger, but tears were streaming down her face now. It wasn’t because of anger at all.
Tomoyo was almost certain that such a miserable sight was changing how she would’ve normally felt about being apprehended for something she wasn’t guilty of doing. She wondered how she must’ve looked, standing there. To be honest, it felt awkward...
She probably had a pitying look in her eyes.
Above all, why was this happening...?
She wasn’t at fault here, but still, she felt... bad. Guilty. That was a better way to describe it. Shou, for whatever reason, was under the impression that Tomoyo was attempting to get with Koji. That much was obvious. What she didn’t understand was why that impression had been made. It was true Tomoyo was with Koji yesterday for a short time, but Tomoyo had never even met Shou, and in the first place, Tomoyo didn’t have interest in Koji. She didn’t think she’d done anything to make anybody believe she was pursuing the guy. But then, if that was the case, why was she feeling so guilty?
Her gaze drifted down toward the floor.
It was probably because Shou was crying right now. That was the obvious answer, if she had to think about it. When a person cries, you just naturally end up feeling sorry for them.
She looked at the pathetic sight of Shou’s tear-streaked face.
Shou’s tears were troubling. It was difficult talking to someone in such an emotional state. Tomoyo felt the urge to grab a handkerchief for her, but she’d need to run inside her room to get her one, and doing that -- leaving Shou to stand there alone with a messed up face -- didn’t seem right.
This girl apparently cared a lot for Koji... probably more than Tomoyo could ever imagine. Tomoyo was just sorry things turned out like this, that the situation was dire enough to make the girl act out in such an extreme manner. Tomoyo was well aware of Koji’s feelings for Kyou. After all, she’d been there when Koji was talking to Tomoya about it.
If Tomoyo were to think back on the scene, she’d smile at how dedicated Shou was to Koji’s happiness. But right now, the thought didn’t cross her mind. Not that it prevented her from being able to sympathize with Shou's concerns.
“I understand,”
Tomoyo said, her gaze soft. “But, that’s not the way it is at all. I have no interest in Koji, so,” she tried to smile to assure Shou that everything was fine, “I’m sorry if I’ve done anything to make you assume otherwise.” She really didn’t know what could’ve possibly made Shou think that, but nevertheless, Tomoyo's words were sincere. "I don't care." Shou said coldly, dabbing away at her puffy, red eyes. As polite as she was being, Shou could not shrug off the fact that Tomoyo could be a very violent young woman at times. That didn't bode well for her cousin, or her. It had been a few months since Koji had ceased his ne'er do-well behavior, but he still wasn't exactly the most popular person on campus. Some seniors avoided him because he was a troublemaker that deliberately went looking for trouble so he could correct it. He was quite the Knight Errant. It had come back to bite him at this trip.
Regardless, Shou was pleased to see he'd put his vigilante attitude behind him, and focused on studies, making friends, and being happy, instead of taking the weight of the world on his shoulder so that others could be happy, and walk down the halls without fear of being roughed up for lunch money. He was a person she looked up to and admired greatly. Sometimes Shou envied his compassion and honesty. One person had come into the equation, and tossed everything into turmoil. Since she spoke with her cousin on a near-daily basis, she was well-informed of his escapades around school. It seemed an innocent thing to make friends. However, one name among those stuck out like a sore thumb. The silver-haired junior standing in front of her. Tomoyo Sakagami.
"You're trouble Sakagami. I don't want you hanging around my cousin, regardless of your relationship with him," she sniffled, red in the face from all her crying, "because he's worked too hard to let someone with your reputation drag him down."
After she had pounded the living daylights out of some people from another school, Tomoyo had become a very popular name. Her past, however, slowly caught up with her. Stories, rumors, everything one would expect. Shou was having none of it. Her record of starting fights just for the sake of fighting, was ignoble. The fact that she could beat people up, didn't give her the right to. At least with her cousin, he was doing it for more altruistic reasons, defending those that couldn't defend themselves. At times he would seem to smile so genuinely, whilst trying to mitigate the world of all it's ills.
"He's a good person. He doesn't need a friend like you." Shou mumbled, turning her head away. It was embarrassing to cry like that, but it was something she felt very strongly about. If he knew what she was doing, he'd probably forgive her. But Shou didn't want him to. For once why couldn't he be selfish and have what he wanted?
"He's such an idiot!" Shou hissed, trying to find a spot on her kimono to dry her eyes with.

Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
Tomoyo averted her gaze, not wanting to stare. The mere sight of anybody crying in public was alarming. It was even more startling to see a stranger crying. But a stranger with such a fiery attitude frantically trying to dab away at puffy, watery eyes was a disturbing and pitiable scene. It was both sad and embarrassing to watch.
It would’ve been infinitely more pitiable however, if Shou hadn’t ripped through Tomoyo’s heart with her verbal daggers, no matter how sniffly her words had been.
“You’re trouble, Sakagami.” Despite Shou’s puffy eyes and flushed face, the onslaught continued.
“... he’s worked too hard to let someone with your reputation drag him down.”
Someone with her reputation...?
Suddenly understanding the situation, her expression abruptly changed. Tomoyo’s eyes widened, then the light left them and the ground somehow became the most interesting thing in the hallway.
Dejected.
That was the only word needed to describe the look on her face.
Tomoyo couldn't deny the fact she was well-known. She couldn't deny the fact that many other students viewed her in a good light. But she also couldn't deny the fact that there were plenty of rumors floating about, some of them truer than others, although many people thought the rumors as unbelievable.
It was unexpected. It was the first time anybody from her school took the rumors circulating in students’ gossipy whispers as the truth and actually confronted her about them. It brought back memories of a past of which she wanted to liberate and disassociate herself from.
She raised her head and looked forward.
“That’s in the past...”
That’s exactly how it was. It really was the past. Tomoyo wasn’t the same weak person she used to be, and she had her brother, Takafumi, to thank for waking her up from a violent, worthless existence.
Things were different now. She was different now. No matter what anyone might say, Tomoyo had reformed herself. This was what she honestly believed. Although some might have disagreed, for her it was the truth, and she was confident in it.
“Even though that might be how you see me... That’s the past. I’m not the same person I was before,”
Tomoyo asserted. Even then, even with that Tomoyo being in the past, a bad reputation wasn’t something that could easily be changed. It was ridiculous if you thought about it enough. Bad reputations never seemed to die, but good reputations could crumble away so easily... [/blockquote]
