(If you're too cool for introductions please at least read the last section of this page titled "Creating an Original Character", as it's vital that everyone read this part of the guide.)
What is Dango Daikazoku?
Dango Daikazoku is our humble home where we roleplay in the universe of Clannad. This universe is a simple one; in fact, it's not much different from the one you live in now. People spend their time going about very ordinary lives, be it attending high school or working at their job. In other words, we are a slice-of-life roleplaying forum. While the setting and world are simple enough, the characters are what make this place special.
Do I need to have seen Clannad to understand any of the plot?
Nope! Since Dango Daikazoku is a slice-of-life forum, there is little mandatory knowledge from the series itself that you need to know. We consider our site to take place in an alternate universe from Clannad proper; therefore, all character developments and site plots are up to the playerbase!
Where does this roleplay take place?
All of the threads in Dango Daikazoku take place in the town of Hikarizaka in Japan. It is a small-sized town that is going through expansion into a small city. Expansion into nearby natural biomes such as a large forest is a standing concern within the city. Hikarizaka is inland and is slightly hilly.
Okay, how do I join?
If you’re interested in joining, that’s great! The first thing you should do is read the Rules. If you are ready to jump into the process of creating a character, please skip to the next paragraph. Otherwise, let me tell you about a luxury that our forum employs: Another World. This board is open to literally anyone, approved character or not. Here you can let your imagination run wild and do whatever it is you desire. Very little is off limits here. (The site rules still apply, but that's about it.) While this may seem like a contradiction with the rest of the forum, we understand that sometimes people just want to try something new and be unrestricted in their creativity. Another World is the place for that. If you just want to jump in without the hassle of going through the formal process, you are free to RP there at any time.
Applying for a Canon Character
Characters on Dango Daikazoku are split into two categories: canon characters and original characters. Canon characters are those who come directly from Clannad. Original characters (OCs) are those made up by the members. If you’re interested in creating an OC, skip to the next section. As for canons, check here to make sure the one you want isn't already claimed! If they aren't, you can reserve canons by sending a private message to one of the staff. Your character is also automatically claimed when you write an application for them.
Now, what do you do first? Make sure you know a lot about the character whom you are interested in. You have to understand them so that you can truly play them as if you were them. Think to yourself: can you step into the shoes of this character without any of their friends and family noticing much difference? If you believe you can, you’re ready to apply! Our forum uses a Trial System for canon characters.
In the Trial System, you must write a scene using your character. This scene is then reviewed by staff, and if we find it to be at an acceptable level of quality and accuracy to the character, we will allow you to enter "Trial Mode." Once this has happened, you can start posting as your chosen canon. However, you will be given advice and tips by staff along the way. After a given period of time, your performance is assessed. From there you are either officially approved, given more time to work on your characterization, or in some cases, rejected.
When you’re ready to apply, this is the template you can use!
Creating an Original Character
So... creating an original character. I'm going to assume this is something everyone has done at some point, or at the very least has some rudimentary grasp over. If not, feel free to ask for help or advice from the other members of the forum. However, when creating a character in this forum I very strongly advise you treat this character as a real person and not simply as a face with some traits attached to it. Why? Because this place relies on its characters first and foremost. The reason why Clannad is so special is because the characters resonated with us. They grew, they felt, and we in turn felt with them. That is the entire reason this forum exists. To explore, enrich, and continue this experience.
It is not the admin or moderators desire to be particular harsh with application reviews. This should be a safe and happy place for everyone involved, and overly harsh criticism is the last thing we want to propagate here. However, because we cannot rely on some of the draws that other genres or forums have (supernatural abilities, intense drama, fantasy setting just to name a few) it is essential that the characters we have are as deep as possible. This does not mean they need to be complex. They don't need to have a 5-page backstory chronicling their intricate history. They simply need to be... real. If you could replace your character with a forgettable side-character from any other show or story, you may want to reconsider if your character is truly finished or if they could be developed some more. Of course, a character will likely not be fully developed before you have even begun RPing, as the entire point of RP is to develop the characters you have to greater heights. There should be some base for this to occur however, and you as the RPer should also work towards growing them. Just as any real person would do.
Again, this isn't because we are trying to be particularly harsh in reviewing characters here, but because this is literally the most important factor in keeping roleplaying here interesting and alive. If you’re up for creating an original character, use this application template. Good luck!
Can I base my original character on characters from other universes?
Yes, this is allowed as long as you change anything that does not fit in our setting. You may even keep their original name and personality, if you wish, and treat them like a canon character. Note that migrated canon characters still use the original character application template.
Are there any restrictions regarding character types?
Please read the Characters Rules for more information.
If you have any questions or feedback regarding the site, creating characters, or rules, please contact one of the staff members on the sidebar.
