Date: Monday, April 21, 2003 Time: 11:00 PM-ish
It was still early into the new school year. This would be her last year, and Hanako was kind of glad this would all be over soon. While many of the students in her class were from the past and were therefore quite familiar with her, there was always a few new students who spent the first few weeks gawking at her. In some sense she was used to it, but the extra attention was always off-putting. So when the teacher asked for someone to take some paperwork down to the offices she was happy to leave just to get some breathing room.
With the papers in hand she headed out into the empty halls towards the offices, taking her time in doing so. She wasn’t going to be missing much this early on into the year, and she wasn’t in a rush to get back. This was a perfect excuse to get some time to breath and prep herself for the rest of the day.
Her attention was caught, however, by the sounds of talking. It looked like she had passed by the science labs, where the teacher was doing some sort of demonstration. She couldn’t quite hear what everyone was saying, but from what she could see through the window they were dealing with what looked like…
There was a sudden surge of fire from a Bunsen burner or something, she couldn’t quite tell, and it didn’t quite matter. It was handled pretty quickly, probably just too much gas or something, but the sight of fire and people recoiling sent her into a small panic. Her entire face felt flushed, her chest felt tight, and her breathing began to stagger. Even though her legs felt somewhat weak, she was able to run off down the hall just enough to be out of sight and sound of the chemistry room, giving her just enough space to sit down against a wall, hand on her chest as she began to try and control her breathing.

Science... chemicals... bleh.
The blonde-haired delinquent sat hunched over in his seat bored at the prospect of his current class. He had been chewing on a stick of gum to curb some of his frustration and keep his mouth busy as he pondered the logic of such classes happening. When would mixing chemicals from one vial to another with or without the addition of heat ever come in handy? There was no practicality to it... cooking was perhaps the closest to being related to that was practical, but the problem with that logic was that there was a completely separate class dedicated to cooking. It felt as though these science classes were meant to simply waste the time of the students sometimes.
"Sonohara-kun!" The teacher called out, "Spit that gum out now. Normally I wouldn't mind it, but there could be adverse consequences should it happen to fall out of your mouth whilst we handle these chemicals!"
"Whatever..." Chitose sighed.
He stood and walked lazily over to the trash bin located near the teacher's desk. The teacher had already begun his lecture about proper protective gear and the dangers of turning the gas up too high on the burners. It was the same, old, tired lecture he always did. What a pain... Chitose wished he'd just left between bells and cut the class entirely and regretted attempting to sit through it.
If only there was something to distract him so he could sneak out.
Wait...!
Chitose subtly turned his head as he finally made it to the bin and spat his gum out and noted that, whilst the same lecture as always, everybody's attention was still focused on the teacher. Beyond that, the teacher had given him the perfect ammunition to stage a distraction.
As Chitose began walking back to his seat at the back of the class he took a brief moment to subtly open up the gas valve for one fo the student's burners. About a half-turn... or perhaps, a little bit more, was probably good enough. He smirked at his own genius as he continued walking, nobody the wiser to his interference. Yes. It wasn't too late to cut this class.
A few minutes passed as he waited, preparing to make his move when...
FWOOSH!
A sudden and quick panic erupted from elsewhere in the room. His plan was a success. When a flame was introduced to the already flowing gas in addition to however much more the student had added, there was a bright, hot flash that shot a few dozen centimeters upwards. It didn't last too long as the teacher quickly moved to extinguish the sudden spout of fire, but it was distracting enough for the delinquent to quickly slip into the hall and close the door behind him.
Success!
Though... there was somebody already out here. Chitose noted a couple of stray sheets of paper fluttering down to the ground in a violent, twisting motion left behind in the wake of a... girl making a run for it down the hall. He barely saw her, but he noted the distinct form of long, black hair and a flitting skirt trailing behind her as she turned the corner further down the way.
Another person cutting class? No?... they were carrying... paperwork?
Chitose looked down and noted that the papers left behind were simple schoolwork. Probably assisting a teacher... but why run? He was quite curious now in addition to happy that he'd managed to escape. He had free time now and decided to follow after her, though at a much easier pace.
Well, that is until he managed to get close enough to hear the sounds of someone struggling with their own lungs. He picked up the pace until he stood over a girl... a third-year girl. The one with the burn marks down the side of her face.
Chitose knelt down and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Oi, you alright?"
No. She didn't seem alright. The question had only seemed natural, though. Who knew? What if she was simply asthmatic and needed a puff of her inhaler and then she'd be fine? What if she wasn't though... Chitose needed to know either way if his meddling was even necessary.

Even just those few seconds of being able to sit and breathe were starting to help her regain control over her system. She felt flushed, arms and leaks a little wobbly as her adrenaline high started to retreat. Her heart was still racing, breathe still unsteady, but she was sure she would be able to recover soon enough and get back to her task. Just needed a few more moments to calm down and get steady.
Distracted by focusing on her breathing, however, she completely missed someone coming up to her and placing their hand on her shoulder. The sudden sensation of touch and sound startled her again, sending her to pushing herself away a foot or so, giving her a look at the boy. He was pretty large, sloppily dressed, ears pierced. Delinquent? Would explain why he’s not in class at the moment.
Oh, right, he said something!
”O-oh, yes, sorry. I was just startled,” she said, trying to see if she could see the chemistry lab. ”Is everybody okay? There was an explosion back at the chemistry lab!” she said, panic slowly rising again, pushing her to be more talkative than normal.
