Hanako wears her school uniform in a very prim and proper style, pairing the well-pressed and clean uniform with a pair of black stockings and brown leather dress boots. Outside of school, however, Hanako does wear surprisingly casual outfits, often consisting of black pants and shoes alongside a long-sleeve blouse and her favorite denim jacket. In a reflection of her insecurities, however, she also tends to wear a black beret that helps to cover her face even more than her hair just alone.
#Personality ;
Her history of trauma in relating to others has made Hanako very slow to trust and feel comfortable around others. She is always concerned about whether her existence is a burden to those around her, whether they see her as weak and broken, what they think of her scars. This high level of self-consciousness about herself has led her to prefer isolation than engagement with others if she can help it. After all, one can’t be hurt by others if one doesn’t interact with others. If forced into social situations, it’s not unusual for her to eventually reach a catatonic state, frozen in place as anxiety grips her.
Still, being self-isolated isn’t the same as disliking people. If one can succeed in interacting with her, Hanako is a friendly and gentle person. She’s not very outspoken, afraid of course that talking out of term or getting angry might cause problems, but she can be easy to get along with after the initial barriers are broken. In fact, she has a rather broad range of interests: literature (often sci-fi but other things as well from time to time), chess, and oddly enough pool and maybe a little wine (Lilly’s sister may have sneaked them into jazz clubs or brought them drinks from time to time). Outside of Lilly, however, there are very few who are privy to this side of her, making her almost on par with Kotomi Ichinose as “weird girl in the library all the time.” Even her dorm room expresses her desire to hide herself from others, with essentially no decoration or personal features beyond a stuffed rabbit (the one thing of her own to have survived the fire).
Hanako, however, doesn’t want to stay this way. She’s highly aware of her overreliance on Lilly for support, and while her self-esteem is low she does not want to be treated as such. At the end of the day, Hanako wants to be treated as normal: to have friends, go to class, to be seen as attractive by another person. Her insecurities and personality mean she can often deal with people treating her as such in fleeting moments, but the thing she fears the most is someone close to her doing the same. If someone were to do so, it might eventually push her to a breaking point.
#History ;Note: This history has been edited for use on Dango Daikazoku.
About ten years ago, Hanako’s entire life was overturned. There was a blackout one night, and her parents had set out some candles. At some point they stopped keeping an eye on them as they went about their business. To this day she still doesn’t know for sure what exactly happened next. She had already gone to bed by then, after all. All she knew was that soon the house was on fire, her mother trying to get her to safety and her father unseen. When the way out was blocked, her mother shielded her as much as she could with her body before fainting from the heat. Her life was saved, but at the cost of her mother’s life. However, she did not escape unscathed. The right side of her body wasn’t completely covered, resulting in severe burn scars all over body. Eventually she was rescued by her father, who had miraculously been able to get her out of the building.
After a period of hospitalization, as well as her mother’s funeral, Hanako eventually returned to as normal a life as could be expected with therapy, both physical and mental. As can be imagined, being only 8 years old, her appearance was a sort of constant teasing and bullying at school. Those who didn't actively bully her usually held their distance, leaving her with a sense of being unwanted and broken. Even with her father still alive, she felt alone and unwanted by the world. Eventually she would simply isolate herself into her books and other interests, able to find at least some solace in the stories and adventures of these fictional characters.
With her graduation from middle school, her father decided it might be best to leave and head out into the countryside. The hope was new surroundings (and less people) would help her with her recovery. Considering the town's hospital and growing status, it also wasn't completely absent of the type of routine medical care and therapy, if she needed it. Eventually it was arranged for her to attend Hikarizaka Private High School, the school’s understanding of her medical issues and willing to work with her about it making it a good fit for her. He pushed her to stay in the dorms, hoping that living there would help her grow a sense of independence and confidence in herself.
In the years since, the only real change in her life has been her friendship with her neighbor, Lilly Satou. The later had a reputation for being rather open and comforting, which Hanako could hear through the walls of the dorms. Eventually she worked up the courage to talk, and the two have been friends ever since. Hanako worries sometimes, however, that she eats up too much of her friend’s time, or that Lilly sees her as too weak to be on her own. Now that she is entering her final year of school, she hopes to find a way to begin standing more on her own and not rely so much on the kindness of her friend to navigate the world.The Roleplayer's Corner

The sound of the rain pounded on the concrete like a drum. Hanako simply stood at the entrance-way, in awe of the performance in front of her…and realizing she didn’t bring herself an umbrella. She had to admit, however, that it was basically her fault. This morning she had forgotten to check the weather, and it had looked clear so hey, she didn’t need an umbrella. Then, as she tended to do, she had been in the library reading when it started to sprinkle a little. Having no real rush to get anywhere, she had planned on waiting it out till it went away.
Of course, as they say, the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.
As usual, she got so engrossed in her book she had failed to notice the storm picking up instead of going away. It was obvious now that what short window of time she had time to get home safe and dry had passed by her completely unnoticed. All that was left was the torrent in front of her. Even the complimentary umbrellas the school provided for such occasions were gone, other, more responsible students having already taken them. Even worse, she couldn’t continue to just wait it out. It was already pretty late by now, the sun starting to reach the horizon. If she waited to leave any longer, it would be dark out. The only thing worse than walking in the rain was walking in rain in the dark.
Absent any outside intervention, it looks like she was going to have to simply accept her fate. Hopefully her bag really was waterproof…
