Up on the Roof

'Empty head, empty stomach' Sunohara was staring at the school lunch lady with pleading puppy-dog eyes. She was returning his gaze with steely lack of pity. "There's... nothing left?" Sunohara asked again, piteously. "No, not a thing. Get outta here Sunohara, don't think you can just show up whenever you want at school to grab a bite to eat. Lemme guess, you woke up at noon, realized your fridge was empty, then came here just to get food?" she said, folding her arms. "..." Sunohara couldn't argue with the truth. He grimaced painfully and then let out a long sigh. Slowly her turned his back and limped away. "Stop playing the wounded hero or I'll drag you back here and make takoyaki outta ya!" the lunch lady yelled, pointing her spatula at Sunohara in a threatening manner. "T-Takoyaki!? How would that even work?" Sunohara said, horrified, but he got the hint and took off. Tomoya wasn't around, and obviously Sunohara couldn't bum food off of anyone since watching Sunohara suffer for various reasons had become a kind of pastime in the school. Finally, with his stomach growling, Sunohara went up to the roof where he and Tomoya would often hang out. Only this time he was alone. Sighing yet again he laid down on the school roof and started to drift off to sleep. In his mind visions of the all-you-can-eat fest he and Tomoya had finished a few days before danced in his head. The memory made his stomach growl all the more. "God, I've been a good kid, right? So there's no reason to kill me off by starvation is there? I'm just a healthy guy who likes girls, that's not a sin right? So could I maybe get some food? Oh, and send an angel with it... Like a really good looking one. Maybe like Belldandy? Or like the angel girls in Tenshi no Shippo? No wait those are re-incarnated pets and my cat's still alive... um... Actually just the food for now, really." Sunohara's stomach let out another growl, and he let out another sigh.

Frozen to the spot... Miyuki trotted about the school, poking her head around a few doors. Her friends had wandered off and Miyuki was left trailing after them. Of course, this was no fault of theirs as Miyuki would often sit and daydream, causing the interest in her to be lost and her friends moving away to find some other sort of entertainment. After a while of doing this, Miyuki was too hungry to do any more. They were probably by the track watching the boys run, passing comment on a few, but such things weren’t as interesting to her.
She had her homemade bento tucked under her arm, and the continuous smell made her increasingly ravenous, sapping her energy. She couldn’t think of many places that people wouldn’t already be. Of course, she wanted somewhere to sit, and perching on windowsills in the hall was uncomfortable, let alone balancing a bento on her knees. Both her class room and the canteen was too far away for her to walk, and her eyes fell upon the stairs to the roof. There were often people up there, and Miyuki would have to settle with somewhere else to eat her lunch.
Setting off for the stairs, she bounced up them, reaching the roof. The sunlight glared at her, and she lifted an arm to shield her eyes. Shifting the bento, fresh aroma hitting her nose and making her stomach emit an embarrassing rumble, which would have gotten her blushing if she weren’t on her own. Seeking out some shade, Miyuki made her way around the roof, only to see the last person she was expecting. Of course, they would often be up here, and Miyuki would steal a glance and hurrying away before she was caught. She jumped back a couple of feet, her mouth working before her brain stopped it.
“S-Sunohara-senpai!”
Her cheeks flushed as she scolded herself mentally. It was random to call someone by that, and that would definitely be picked up on. There were no friends to pull her away, or quietly giggle at her, so she was rooted to the spot, unable to turn tail and run. The only thing really working was her heart, running in overdrive like a frightened rabbit.

'What light through yonder stairwell breaks!' Sunohara heard a voice call to him. Well, it didn't exactly have that calling quality, more like a sort of surprised exclamation. It was a feminine voice. In his mind he started mentally drawing some conclusions: A. Female=Angel? No wait he canceled that order... Or maybe Heaven was like one of those places where after you've ordered something you have to take it whether you wanted to or not. So, angel? B. Surprised exclamation... like shock? Like 'Oh my goodness what has happened to you' kind of thing? He had no idea there would be anyone shocked by his presence, so he assumed she was reacting to his 'pitiable state' lying on the roof with his poor tummy growling loudly. C. IF THEN THEREFORE (he never paid enough attention in math to know how to actually put those into an equation) An angel had appeared to save him and thought it was too late and he was already dead/dying. "Don't worry my angel! I'm still alive!" he cried out, giving no further explanation. He then jumped to his feet and turned to look at his savior. It -was- in fact a girl. However, something looked familiar about this girl... "Kurata... Miyuki?" he attached a name to the face. Suddenly he remembered where he had seen her last. It was in a photo-book created by a certain member of the photography club labeled 'Promising First-Years; A-to-Z listing' and sold for a moderate price to such people as found such things useful. Sunohara happened to own every edition, and his own reviews were sometimes included in the books as he was a trusted connoisseur of feminine charm in the school. There was a long silence as Sunohara slowly recalled all this information and tried to make sense of it. Then, as if a lightbulb had come on in his head, he smacked his fist against his palm lightly. "Oh I see, you're an angel disguised as a schoolgirl. That makes sense. Like in Pita-Ten, right?" Following this completely random statement Sunohara's stomach gave a growl like an angry grizzly and he doubled over in melodramatic hunger-pain. "Gah! So... hungry... losing will... to live..." he murmured, as always trying to milk some sympathy.

Is this hunger, or the butterflies? Miyuki jumped back a bit as he sprung back into lift. Whether ‘my angel’ was just something he would call someone, like a pet name, or something else? At that, her cheeks reddened and she brought up a sleeve to try and hide it. One of Miyuki’s personality downfalls was her uncontrollable ability to blush at whatever. As her cheeks were flushing, she heard her name and straightened up suddenly, as if it was barked from a military commander. Of all things, she didn’t expect him to know her name. It sparked a butterfly in her stomach to know, and it fluttered about as she nodded.
As there was a silence, which Miyuki found increasingly awkward, she didn’t want to break the train of thought that was obvious by his expression. Hands still wrapped around the bow of her bento, she fiddled with it, pressing her knuckles against the box. She could only hope it would be eaten before lunch finished. She flinched slightly as he leapt into action again. Thinking over the angel subject, it was rather a nice feeling to think she was being considered one…
”Uhm…Well…You might have the wrong ange-person or…Uhm…"
Her words were cut off as an audible growl was emitted from his stomach. She saw the mini drama performance, and melted at it. There was a rather tasty bento box she had held in her hands, and guilt made her want to give it to him. She probably would have if it weren’t for the suppressed growls of her own stomach holding her back. Biting her lip, she contemplated what to do. It was simple, share it with him! It would be cute…Eating lunch together…Her cheeks flushed again and she recoiled under her hair.
Miyuki!
Was this her conscience? She had seen it in movies...
This is your chance! Do it!
...Okay!
Sticking her arms out, with the bento box still in motion under them. It swung for a moment, for she had forgotten what to say, more like, she didn’t know what to say. There was a moment there, where she had to think. It looks like the butterflies in her stomach had begun to plague her brain, if they hadn’t already…There were a number of daydreams she wouldn’t really want to speak about. After a couple of moments had passed, Miyuki remembered she had to talk. Squeezing her eyes closed, she said aloud.
”W…Would you like to share with me? Sunohara-senpai!”

'Hungry like the wolf' "Sh-share some?" Sunohara repeated the words in utter astonishment. Tears sprang to his eyes and he clasped his hands in front of him. Around him it was always 'Sunohara, let me try some of that' or 'Hey Sunohara could you pay for this?' or 'Hey Sunohara, you're out of ramen...' or 'Oh yeah, sorry, I ate your share while you were in the bathroom'. Always he had been willing to share a morsel with others in need, but never had the reverse offer been extended. "Is it really okay? Is it really?" Sunohara gave a puppy-like look of utter adoration and worship. This girl was offering to provide for the needs of his urgently growling stomach, something no one had done for him since childhood. A home-cooked meal, in a bento even. He had never eaten out of a bento! He wondered if it tasted different. Still on his knees after the melodramatic hunger pose, he put up his hands like a begging dog and fixed Miyuki with the pleading gaze of a hungry canine... all he lacked was the high-pitched whimper. All he was waiting for was a confirmation that this was, indeed, real and not a joke, prank, or illusion.

I hope they taste good… Miyuki nodded, if not slightly taken aback by the sudden reaction. Often she would share her lunch with her friends, and some other people who were going hungry, if the food in the cafeteria was low. They were all grateful, but Miyuki hadn’t experienced such a dramatic reaction from him. Blushing a little, she looked away for a moment, gathering her wits. Had he never shared lunch with someone before? By this, obviously not. She was surprised at his disbelief that she was going to give him something to eat…She could…Do it more often. Her eyes met his, and she abruptly lowered them due to the puppy-like expression. Miyuki wasn't used to this kind of adoration, at least not over some food...Her cheeks reddened.
“Y-Yes, really. You must have had onigiri before, so I’m sure you might like it. I made it myself…”
Holding out the bento, she set it down, knelt and began unravelling the cloth tied around it. Opening the box, she took in the smell of it. Smiling slightly, she kept her eyes on the bento and pushed it forward to him. It was lucky for her that she had taken her time on this one to prepare it. It did look lovely. Onigiri with a number of different fillings. One of her favourites. Hopefully he would like it.
Please…
Praying that it wasn’t some sort of acquired taste she had, and that it wouldn’t seem awful to him, she gestured to them.
”You can take whatever looks nice to you. I don’t mind.”

'Om nom nom' As soon as the smell of home cooked bento hit his nose Sunohara was slavering like a hungry dog, and then when the bento was offered he could restrain himself no longer. Gone was the cutely begging puppy boy... he was -hungry-! Rather than starting with a taste he instead dug in with both hands, stuffing his face as fast as possible to tame the raging beast of hunger in his belly. Always polite, though, Sunohara made sure to voice his opinion between swallows. "Oh! It's good! Just like my mom makes!" he said, helping himself to some more. "This is great! Five stars!"Truly he hadn't had home-cooked anything since leaving home. The nostalgia of a hand-made meal made it all the better, though Sunohara wasn't one given to deep or poignant reflection. He was a person who lived in the now. And the now was full of pleasant taste, aroma and a beautiful girl giving him food to fill his empty stomach. "Ahhh! It's so good! I'm totally converted! I thought angels only existed in anime, but now I'll make sure to always properly say my prayers in thanks! I'm so happy!"And happy he was... and still stuffing his face.
