Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
Date: April 25, 2003 Friday Time: 8:23 am She stood there alone at the foot of the hill, her long silver hair billowing out behind her. Her wristwatch ticked on noiselessly and unnoticed, while she herself was blissfully unaware of the fact that the school bell would ring in a mere seven minutes. She was staring at one of the many sakura which lined the steep hill leading up to the school building. Its petals had already been shed a week ago and all that remained on the branches were its young green leaves.
Tomoyo was lost in the timelessness of her memories from last year’s spring.
“I want to come and see these sakura every year with everyone, as a family.” Those were Takafumi’s words as the pink petals danced around on the wind.
The trees still stood here, but their future was murky and uncertain. The plan was to widen the road in the name of progress, but at the cost of the cherry trees. She understood that progress was all well and good, but such a way of going about it was like tearing down a building’s foundation to build it up further. The trees here held a lot of importance to the people living in the town. If these trees were to be cut down, the community would lose precious reminders of precious times shared with friends and family.
Tomoyo knew she couldn’t let that happen.
But, what she didn't know was that she would soon be late to class... and she wouldn’t realize it until the bell would shake her awake from her own thoughts. She was being left behind the crowd of students marching up the hill to attend school. The crowd was trickling away as time passed on, and now the students at the back of the rivulet of a crowd were the ones who had accidentally slept in for too long. They walked hurriedly, knowing they would be late if they were any slower. As for Tomoyo, she remained there, unmoving.

Friday... He suddenly felt a wave of weakness wash over him as he awoke to the new day. It wasn't caused so much by physical weakness, but more so by a mental one. He was going to have another boring lesson today...a lesson he wouldn't be able to refuse. Past that, he would soon be graduating, and after that came work. Would he even have the willpower to work? Would he even graduate? No. As bad as he was, graduation seemed an inevitable fate, even for those with poor marks. As ironic as it was, he felt that attending class without thinking about anything else was a lot more convenient then risk failing to graduate. Continuing to work in order to eat...it was a rut he seemed to be continuously sinking into - and he knew all too well that if he were to be stuck in that gear, then despite knowing how pathetic he would be, he would likely be unable to let go of the mindset. He shivered at the thought. On the bright side, he only had to endure it all for one last year.
He glanced at his clock to check the time. It was still early. So early in fact that he had enough time to make it to first period. Even with the thought...he didn't feel like going to first period. At all. The wonders of being lazy. With a moment of hesitation he realizes the truly meaningless it all is - as much as he wanted to sleep, he had thought about too many gloomy things far too early in the morning, he was now, unfortunately, wide awake. It didn't take him long to realize the inevitably of staying in bed - depression - so instead he decided to simply get going. As if trying to shake those heavy thoughts from his mind, he picked himself out of bed.
As he walked inside the crowd of students attending school, a lone girl ahead caught his attention. It was Tomoyo, staring straight at some cherry tree. He emulated her gaze to see what had captured her attention so wholly. Petals had scattered all around due to the rain, and all that was left of the tree were its leaves. It seemed as though he had forgotten about the time while starting at some cherry tree. At this rate she would be late...
"You look really carefree...don't you know you're about to be late?
It felt like a miracle that he had called out to her. What had he started talking to her? Why had he called out? She responded as if coming out of a daze.
"Ah...what time is it?"
"The bell is about to ring."
"I see...I almost got in a bad situation. I appreciate you calling out to me. Thanks."
He was surprised she had honestly thanked him for such a trivial thing. He couldn't help but think of her open hearted nature.
"Go now."
"You're going too right?"
"Go on ahead"
"You're not going with me? You'll be late."
"I don't mind."
"Why?"
"Well you see...I'm a very shy person. I want to walk the hill alone." He blurted out some lie to push her along, away from her and her questioning gaze.
"I see...it makes me feel happy, to know that you feel shy being with me..."
He relaxed when he heard of her joy. She had bought it. He was safe...until.
"But you see..."
As if on queue the bell suddenly rang.
"I won't let anyone be late in front of me."
"Eh...?" She suddenly grabbed his arm.
"Hey wait!"
"Run, or I'll drag you along."
"Are you serious?!"

She was glad he’d been considerate enough to bring her out of her thoughts and warn her about the passing time. The only problem was that they were late now, as the bell so kindly told them, but as Tomoyo had said, she wasn’t planning on letting Okazaki be late in front of her, regardless of whether or not he was a shy person. She gave him a choice: he could either run, or be dragged to school with her.
She gripped his hand firmly, pulling the senior up the hill for the first few seconds until it seemed he finally understood it would be futile to resist and that running with her -- or at least trying to keep up -- would be the less troublesome option. She was still in the front, with Okazaki linked to her by the hand, but at least he wasn’t being dead weight. Too bad his understanding slipped his mind as soon as his laziness caught up with him.
He slowed down again, claiming to be tired, which earned him a scrutinizing gaze from Tomoyo. “You’re hopeless...”
she said. And then she pulled his arm again. “Let’s go!” She wasn’t willing to waste any time walking when they were already late by a minute. The warm inside air of the school building greeted them as they ran inside. Running through the school would normally pose as a safety hazard, but seeing as there was nobody else in the halls at this time (due to the fact the students were already in their classes by the bell), the pair posed no threat to the student body. “Where’s your classroom?” she asked him, but her eyes weren’t on him. They were fixated on a bulletin board in the hallway. Wishing to take the sight in, she slowed her pace just enough to skim over the information posted on the board. It was regarding student council elections. On it was a list of names, announcing candidacy for the positions. One of the lines read: Student Council Presidential Candidate: Sakagami Tomoyo [/blockquote]

"But you see, I'm tired, so I'll just walk."
It had a low chance of working, after all this had been the same girl who dragged him all the way up the hill for the mere sake of ensuring BOTH of there attendance marks. Maybe it would have simply been more convenient to walk past her...then again, it was a miracle he had talked to her in the first place. He still couldn't help but wond-
"Let's go!"
Another fight for his life commenced as he followed closely behind, no choice but to keep up lest her death grip drag her along. He was exaggerating of course, but this really was troublesome, what kind of stuff was this girl made out of anyway?
"Seriously?!"
By the time they had made it to the building he was starting to breath heavy - it almost looked like they were going to make it...barely. She was breathing easy with a composed smile on her face. How in th-
"Where's your classroom?"
He didn't know why he continued to delay the inevitable - but his nature could do little else but answer:
"Don't know."
He was waiting, nay, expecting a terse and sudden exclamation of disbelief, or offer to take him to every class - sprinting all the way. Would she really go so far? That really would be interesting...but there was no response. Huh? That seemed strangely out of character. He gaze was affixed on something, this time the bulletin boards. He rarely payed attention to them, as he had little interest in the activities of a school life he long gave up, but she seemed to be intently staring at...a picture of herself. Huh?! Student Council President? Tomoyo?! He couldn't say he was surprised, given her attitude, morals, and personality, but it still came as a shock to him. Him and the student council...it was two completely different worlds, why was she associating herself with him? The chase to class seemingly forgotten, he spoke once again.
"Student Council huh? That's quite the goal you have there..."

“Student Council huh? That’s quite the goal you have there,” she heard Okazaki’s voice. He didn’t sound surprised.
“Yeah,”
she affirmed the board’s validity with a resolute nod. If by chance Okazaki had a problem with her running for Student Council President, she didn’t get that sort of impression. It wasn’t like she was expecting any kind of disapproval. She really wasn’t expecting anything at all, nor did the thought cross her mind how the differences between the two of them -- Okazaki’s status as a delinquent, and her candidacy for President -- could possibly affect the friendliness the two shared. “I’m announcing candidacy for the Student Council President.” Tomoyo pulled her eyes away from the board and turned her head to look at Okazaki. He looked short of breath. If they were to run to school like this every morning, climbing the hill would become easier for him. Tomoyo entertained the idea in her head for a little while. And then she thought something like this – going to school together with Okazaki – would be fun. Despite it all, she still hadn’t forgotten Okazaki's ridiculous answer. “Also...” They needed to make it to class, and right now they were dilly-dallying. “What do you mean? There’s no way you wouldn’t know where your class is.” Her eyes were narrowed at him with suspicion. Was he trying to skip class? While she didn’t mind the concept of standing around talking about her goals with him, they could do that when the clock wasn’t breathing down their necks. Tomoyo gave his arm a tug again. If he wasn’t willing to tell her, she’d run him to the third year hall and find his class and personally escort him to it. She really wasn’t joking when she said she wouldn’t allow another student to be late in front of her. [/blockquote]

"It's alright, it seems the teacher in charge isn't here yet."
With barely a moments pause before,
"Later."
She quickly ran out of the room with a smile of satisfaction, her goal finally complete.
A young man suddenly chirped up,
"Huh? It's unusual for you to be here this early, Okazaki."
A soft spoken,
"Yeah..."
Was the only response he could seem to utter. His breathing was rough, composure astray as he struggled to piece together what had just happened. She had dragged him to the top floor, and to save face on his part, he told her which room his classroom was in. While he didn't mind people talking about him, or rather didn't care, he didn't like attracting attention to himself, and knowing her, she would go to no ends, embarrassing or not, to get him to his classroom. While the girl was sharp enough to stand a chance at student president, or so he assumed, she seemed oblivious to how most people both felt and interacted with each other. A dangerous girl.
He absentmindedly gazed at his open palm, just as the lesson was about to start, and realized that he had been holding hands with a girl all the way from the bottom of the hill to his very own classroom...but...as strange as it was, he didn't feel uncomfortable about it.
