"But you don't have funny hair and you're really nice~!"
Well, she was hopefully right on one count, but if she considered him "really nice" he couldn't imagine who she would consider "really mean". Perhaps she was oblivious to his words and merely paid attention to his actions? There first meeting had been him feeding her after all. An image of an over-excitable puppy came to his mind. Bounding with energy, loved by all, incredibly loyal, and completely clueless. He had always been more of a cat person himself, but her energy and openness to him was surprisingly refreshing. While ordinarily he lazed around and seemed to feel perpetually tired, her energy made him feel lively again.
"I definitely, definitely don't regret spending time with nice, no-funny-hair, not-delinquent Okazaki-sempai!"
"Okay true, I'm not the kind of delinquent with funny hair"
Ordinarily he would question her sources, but the delinquent visitors they had recieved from a neighboring school had unfortunately fit the bill perfectly. Tomoyo could only arrive at the scene so fast.
"But I sleep in class, show up whenever I want or even skip entirely, never do my homework, and pull pranks. That's what most people consider a delinquent. Ask anyone."
He wasn't quite sure why he was staying on a topic he was wholly uncomfortable with. It wasn't one he was particularly proud of or enjoyed talking about. It wasn't a title he had willingly chosen and it certainly wasn't a lifestyle that was the least bit fulfilling. Even the mention of the word "delinquent" annoyed him, as it so often seemed to be when he walked by gossiping freshmen and juniors.
"Ehhhh?! Where did it gooooo~?!"
Even the way she looked at her empty bowl reminded him of a puppy. Perhaps...that was why. Perhaps he wanted her to truly understand what she was getting into so that...she didn't one day stumble onto the answer herself and run away. Strangers who never gave him a chance were easy enough to ignore. But friends, even acquaintances who cut off ties due to something that had always been true...that was too painful to bear. He wouldn't go through that again if he could help it. Never again.

The emptiness of her bowl was distressing, and for a few moments, Erina was distracted, swishing her chopsticks through the noodleless broth. Finally satisfied that there was not more food lurking in the depths of her soup, she reluctantly put down her chopsticks and gave Okazaki a lightly scolding look.
"Ehhh?! That's not very good! You're too nice to act like that, Okazaki-sempai!"
Now that she thought about it... Ah, Okazaki wasn't in class either the time she fell asleep! That... made more sense. She frowned in puzzlement as she considered this. Was that why the teacher had looked at him so coldly the other day? The memory made her a little sad, and she pushed the thought aside. Tomoya wasn't a delinquent! No, of course not! Maybe he did do some things he wasn't supposed to, but he had a good heart, didn't he? Yes, he wasn't a delinquent, just a... What was he...?
"Oh, oh! Ask me!"
The girl perked up, pointing a finger at herself, but didn't wait for her upperclassman to respond before answering.
"A delinquent is a bad kid who isn't very nice! And Okazaki-sempai is nice, so Okazaki-sempai isn't a delinquent!"
This declaration was accompanied by a firm nod. Was there a word for what Okazaki was? Maybe she should make one up! What would sound good...?

"Fine, have it your way."
He sighed in defeat and rested his head on the table, glancing sideways towards the remaining festivities. As the day drew to a close, the booths were gradually being taken down one by one and the crowds of participants were slowly thinning and disappearing.
A warm glow. Despite acting frustrated or annoyed, that was the true emotion her reply had instilled in him. It wasn't very secure or particularly strong but...it was definitely a pleasant feeling. A feeling he wanted to hold on to.
"Just don't be surprised when people warn you about me."
He added as a final warning. Though if anything they should really be warning others of her. Despite spending all this time with her he still had no idea what went on in her mind or how she came to half the conclusions she did. Some people might disregard or fear such a mind. For some reason he found it interesting though. He was probably just bored - as usual.
He finished his bowl soon after, reflecting back on his...interesting experience that day. All in all today had been...fun? Yeah. It was fun. Tiring, annoying, inconvenient and border-line frightening at parts...but fun. When he had come to the festival he had expected a meal and some viewing entertainment at best...but instead he had run through a dark room bumping and pounding into everyone and everything, saved her mental and emotional health from a perverted maid cafe, and finally had her, the black hole, buy him food, and actually offer him more. He wasn't sure what he did to deserve this - certainly not getting a cranky teacher off her tail - but he had had fun. He had made a friend. A real friend. With the most unlikely person in the entire school. A short, hyperactive, overly imaginative, extroverted, friendly, club attending, forever cheerful, unreadable and unpredictable freshmen girl...friends with a tall, lazy, anti-social, sarcastic, curious and confused senior delinquent, who was also apparently a cow prince. What could possibly go wrong?
End.
