Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
He laughed. It had started out only as a chuckle, the lightest of chuckles, but it soon rose into a jolly, full-fledged laugh, and as per laughter’s usual nature, it was contagious. She’d eyed him with a curious, confused look at first, but that bewilderment soon made way for a smile, and before she knew it, a chuckle escaped her own lips. She was laughing softly and shaking her head at the same time, wondering what was so funny in the first place, all the while finding the entire situation amusing.
When their laughter subsided and Koji regained his composure enough to reveal the name of the girl he so admired, Tomoyo suddenly understood why they had begun laughing.
She'd been acquainted with Kyou as a result of some strange events regarding an eccentric first-year girl, and although Tomoyo and Kyou lost contact recently (due to schoolwork and other obligations making the two of them too busy to unite again), Tomoyo would always remember the girl's spunky nature. She couldn’t disagree with the descriptors Koji gave her. Along with being loyal, she was violent, crazy, and a demon… all three of which would certainly be less than flattering to any girl. Then, how was it possible all the terms he gave her sounded so affectionate?
He said he liked those traits of hers too.
Tomoyo stared at the boy’s face, lit up by the sunlight of midday filtering in through the windows of the cafe. He looked so happy and at ease. Were these the effects of love, she wondered? In the moments that she watched him, she felt like an outsider catching a glimpse into the private life of another person. The look on Koji’s face was foreign to her, and she wondered if she would ever be able to feel those feelings too, if she would ever be able to smile the way he did. It was a distinctly warm, soft, and lovely expression.
She snapped out of it in an instant. His eyes had met hers, and suddenly finding it embarrassing to have been caught staring, Tomoyo turned her startled gaze to the long-neglected crepe still in her hands. She took a large, hasty bite out of it and swallowed, barely taking time to savor its sweet flavor.
“Have you ever felt so strongly about someone that you almost go crazy from it?”
he asked. His question caught her off guard and she took yet another bite out of her crepe, this time chewing slowly. Despite it being an easy question to answer, Tomoyo felt immature and unsatisfied with her response. Finally swallowing, she returned her eyes to his. “No... I can’t say I have.” Sure, she’d been interested in someone before, but Tomoyo had since given up on pursuing him, and the feelings she had for him were nowhere near as strong as the feelings Koji held for Kyou. “I’m the student council president now, so I don’t have time for a relationship in the first place,” she explained. It was a regretful fact, and although Tomoyo had a gut feeling it was an excuse for other reasons, it was simply easier to ignore the thoughts of a relationship at this point. “However…” she said wistfully, “It looks like it’d be fun to have those sorts feelings for someone.” … What am I saying?Tomoyo smiled wryly and shook her head, dismissing her words. It was weird to say such things. If she wasn’t careful, she would find herself longing for a relationship in no time. A relationship was the last thing she needed. “... Hey.” Tomoyo leaned forward on the table, questioning why the thought hadn’t crossed her mind earlier. “If you love her so much, then why are you eating here with me? Shouldn’t you have asked her out to eat?” [/blockquote]

“I’m the student council president now, so I don’t have time for a relationship in the first place,”
"That's..." Koji began, with an air of stillness about his voice. He cast his eyes down, unable to finish his sentence. Much as he wanted to, it was Tomoyo's business who, or what shed decided to devote her time to.
That's unfair to you...
Truly, it gave him a nasty feeling inside of him. One that churned and gurgled like the fire in the pit of a dragon's belly. Only this time, the repose crusader was unable to slay it, and put the fire to rest. Was it fair for her to give up on following one thing, to pursue another? Koji didn't know. He did, however feel that it was quite a struggle for the girl to go through her task alone. Even if she could only rely on herself.
“However… It looks like it’d be fun to have those sorts feelings for someone.”
Koji plastered a forced smile on his face. Perhaps it was not to be. Her Romeo could possibly be asking himself "wherefore art thou?". He'd be left lingering. The demands of the Student President were just that; demanding. This was a rare moment where Sakagami Tomoyo could take a break from her duties, and he had selfishly dragged her out on a whim, corrected a howling mistake, and managed to lighten the mood. So why now, was the boy feeling glum?
His plastic smile began to warp, askew on his face, as his lips parted, leaving a small gap, which he quickly plugged with more crepe.
“... Hey.”
Koji's eyes rose up.
“If you love her so much, then why are you eating here with me? Shouldn’t you have asked her out to eat?”
Koji's voice caught itself in the briefest moment of a gasp, choking itself out to die. Tomoyo's question had blown him out of the water. It was sharp as a tack, and dug into his hindbrain, lancing it's way forwards. Indeed, why didn't he ask Kyou? He still liked her, didn't he? But surely he could be forgiven, couldn't he? After all, Tomoyo was his friend. That was what friends did; spend time together, regardless of gender.
The boy's mouth hung open. He was quite speechless.
"I... Don't know." He admitted, after a brief silence, letting his arms slink to his sides, one still holding his treat. Shou's warnings came flooding back. Nagging at him to act before it was too late. To ask Fujibayashi Kyou out, to be with him, and let him make her as happy as he could. How many weeks had it been since he had acted? The poem in the locker. The lunch with her in awkward silence... He loved her.
She did not love him.
He loved her. Or rather, had loved her, as a person. It was that slow, crystallizing moment when he realized how he really felt, and what he, in the end had been pressured into doing. By an over-eager relative's own desires. Shou wanted him to be happy after his 'heroism'. His reward. Koji did not feel like a hero. He had lashed out at people who simply needed disciplining. He wasn't a hero. He had been a terrible person. Koji's bottom lip quivered, and his grip loosened on his crepe, the last bite of batter sliding out of the sleeve. He still wanted Kyou to be happy. Trying to pour all of his misplaced affections would only hurt someone in the end. Kyou did love someone. He was sure of that. His brow descended. A painful admission was coming. If she would be happy with him, then there was no need for him to pursue her, when he really didn't love her at all.
"Because if I really do care about her, I'll let her be happy with who she really loves."

Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
Silence. A dumbfounded expression found its way to Koji’s face, and almost immediately Tomoyo knew he’d yet again taken her too seriously.
“I… don’t know.”
She watched helplessly as his form sagged and became limp; he was visibly deflating before her very eyes.
This is bad…
He was giving her question way too much thought when she’d only been expecting something short and simple, like “I didn’t get a chance to see her today,” or “I didn’t think I should bother her today”. Instead, a million thoughts appeared to swim and filter through Koji’s pale eyes like fishes.
Had she… unintentionally broken him?
In a matter of seconds, realization materialized across Koji’s features. “Because if I really do care about her,”
he said, “I’ll let her be happy with who she really loves.” It was Tomoyo’s turn to be dumbfounded. “That’s… sweet,” she said. As tender his words were, they were sad. Staring down at her hands, she found it difficult to imagine herself in Koji’s shoes. Perhaps his sacrifice was a petty one, one which paled in comparison to other more heart-wrenching sacrifices made in a lifetime, but despite it being only a high school crush (or maybe it really was love as he said?), giving up one’s happiness for another’s was nonetheless a selfless gesture. She blinked her surprised blue eyes. “You’re a good guy. I’m sure you’ll find someone eventually.” Was falling in love in high school such a wise idea, Tomoyo wondered? To her, it seemed the opposite. Everyone was still so young and there was still so much more to be done. High school relationships were pointless; in the end, they rarely lasted past graduation. Why invest so much time and heart into something that wouldn’t last? Was it for the joy of the moment? Loving blindly without thinking of bad things to come? It was… romantic. She bit her lip. She didn’t understand love at all. With a light sigh, Tomoyo peered at her wristwatch. Break was almost over. The cafe was as busy as it was when they first came in (which only made sense, because they hadn't stayed for too long), but at the same time, it somehow felt lonelier. Perhaps she'd be able to shake off the feeling back at school. "… Well, we're almost out of time," she informed, tidying up her side of the table before rising from her seat. She turned to face him then, this time with a small joyous smile, her eyes squinted with honest happiness. "I had fun. Thanks for showing me this place, Koji,” she chirped. “I’ll be sure to try out the fortune telling like you suggested.” [/blockquote]

Tiny flecks of skin were building up on Koji's teeth, as his chewed at his lower lip, then the inside of his cheek. Something... Anything to distract himself from his own line of thought. This horrible realization churning away in his stomach, resonating with a sickly bubbling in his stomach. He finally realized he'd dropped his crepe, and it's melting contents spilled onto the floor.
He had lost his appetite anyway, even if it hadn't met the ground.
Scooping it up, he quickly discarded what was left of the dust-caked treat. Now... Now the young man couldn't tear himself away from his position at the warmed plastic top of the trash can. He was stead as any statue. He wished he were a statue.
“You’re a good guy. I’m sure you’ll find someone eventually.”
A long, slow inhale. Koji turned, wearing a smile as plastic as the refuse box he'd had his hand on a mere moment ago. It was horribly false, and anyone with a brain cell to spare could notice. He'd wasted all this time, and had only been selfishly pursing someone who already had their heart set on someone else. He must've been such a fool to her.
Romance... What a joke...
Three years of falling for someone. Three years wasted. There were plenty of smart, fun young women in Hikarizaka. Why he had chose to focus his attention on one fiery girl seemed baffling to Otomo. Yet he knew why.
They weren't her.
Keeping a brave face, Koji chuckled a hollow chuckle, a ridiculously stupid sheepish grin playing upon his visage. He placed his hand behind his head, and finally his forced laughter subsided. He knew Tomoyo would see right through it, yet did it anyway, if only out of pride.
"I guess I really am an idiot." The teen joked, rigid and stiff, seemingly unable to put one leg in front of the other. His expression turned plain, and his body returned to it's normal self as he noticed Sakagami checking her wristwatch, and began cleaning up.
"… Well, we're almost out of time,"
"Yeah..."
"I had fun. Thanks for showing me this place, Koji,”
The boy nodded.
“I’ll be sure to try out the fortune telling like you suggested.”
"Mm, I'll see you tomorrow then." He pipped up, his emotions genuine this time, waving his friend goodbye as she departed. With another long breath drawn out, Koji decided he'd take the long way back to school. To hell with whatever the teachers thought. He needed the fresh air to clear his overclocked head. So Koji waited until Tomoyo had vanished from sight, before turning away, and walking down his own path, back to school.
"You're an idiot Otomo. Just like Dad." Koji huffed to himself.
