#Personality ;
Karu is a cynical person. His immediate thought whenever someone is helpful or offers him advice is, "what's the catch?" He assumes that all people by default are out to get something out of him, and he sees the competitiveness of society as proof of this. In Karu's view of society, people are primarily self-serving and the strong take advantage of the weak to achieve their desires. Humans are not unlike animals, but at least animals seem to have compassion and understanding between individuals, so humanity is below even that. Most humans are simply biological machines. As such, Karu refers to society as a whole as "the World of Machines" and individuals are simply "machines" until proven otherwise.
This romanticized framework of viewing the world is, at its source, due to his overactive imagination and penchant for storytelling. As a child, Karu's dream was to become a writer. While he no longer entertains this dream, his mind has been primed from years of writing stories for using lofty and descriptive language to interpret the world and his own feelings. Thus, "the World of Machines". He's aware that his melodramatic style of writing bleeds into how he thinks about the world, and it's something he is a bit self-conscious about, so he keeps such thoughts to himself.
Due to his cynicism, Karu is uncomfortable when other people learn more about him and his life, because in his mind, anything he reveals about himself can be used against him. He keeps up a "mask" that protects his innermost self from the people he meets. Behind his mask, he speaks to others extremely formally, sometimes even in a confusing and unclear manner. The indirectness of his speech helps disguise what he's truly feeling or thinking in a situation when he wants to seem neutral or uninvested.
However, beware of his bite. In spite of his insecurities, the mask he puts up empowers him to do very bold things. He will act rashly if he thinks there is some personal gain in it. He'll speak bluntly, or even insultingly, in the face of people he sees as manipulative or morally bankrupt, which can get him into trouble. He has a low tolerance for things he doesn't care about or things he thinks are repugnant. Don't expect Karu to quietly go along with the mob if he sees the mob as "wrong".
Karu's chasing of catharsis is empowered by his mask, but motivated by a sense of nihilism, though he would not recognize or use that word himself. He thinks that the world crafted by nature revolves solely around passing on genes, and he sees the world that humans have built not much better, where success it measured in your career and your family. He feels trapped by the inevitable rut of life in society and as such, sees existence as one long pointless train of events until demise. He gives in to his bold nature to forget, if only for a moment, of how pointless everything feels. Better to spend the day getting into trouble than to spend it moping in existential despair.
Occasionally Karu's antics will end up inadvertently revealing a compassionate side of him. Because he sees the world as one where the strong prey on the weak, he sees exposed weakness in others as unfavourable. When he sees weakness in others, he feels inclined to protect them from the same world that he protects himself from by wearing a mask. He will sometimes go to foolish lengths to help someone he sees as downtrodden. This part of his personality clashes with his cynicism, as he thinks his own compassion is a display of weakness, and he fears that one day, he will put himself in a place where he is easily taken advantage of. The battle between his cynicism and his compassion wages constantly as he moves about in the world.
In the rare times where Karu feels completely at ease with another person, he is playful and earnest. He likes to entertain others, either with jokes or by doing activities he thinks they would enjoy. He wants to see the people he cares about happy. Unfortunately, at the time of his acceptance into Hikarizaka Private High School, he did not have any friends, so this side of him quickly decayed, but with the right circumstances it could one day be renewed...
#History ;
Karu grew up an only child in the suburbs of Tokyo. His father was a "wage slave", working in an office in downtown Tokyo but only barely making enough to, alongside his mother's part time job, support the family. Karu's childhood was uneventful for the most part -- he had hobbies, like writing works of fiction, and plenty of friends in school. His mind was always wandering, always imagining something new and exciting. In addition to applying this creatively, he also set his mind to learning about the world and its systems. He would take things apart around the house to figure out how they worked and ask many questions during classes until he was satisfied. He was also a "class clown", in a way, as he loved to be the center of attention. Outside of classes he would bring other kids along on his imaginative adventures or share his stories with them.
As Karu grew older, his curiosity grew, and the more he learned about the systems that society ran on, the less magical and wonderful the world seemed. He also learned the meaning of the phrase "the nail that sticks out gets hammered" through firsthand experience. The more eyes he drew to himself at school, the more negative attention that came with it. This became most evident in the transition to middle school, so he eventually stopped being as open with others. He stopped asking so many questions during class and stopped telling classmates about his ideas. He closed himself off to only a tight-knit group of friends.
Then Tokyo was wiped out by a meteor so he moved to Hikarizaka. The end.
