Makoto usually enjoyed school. He'd always been that way, ever since he was little. He'd even whine and complain whenever he got sick because it meant he couldn't go to school. It wasn't just because of friends either, because he actually didn't have many of those — he just really loved to learn. It was one of his favorite things ever.
As such, he assumed that he would enjoy the first day of his second year... but that was before the (unfortunately well-known) death of his father. He couldn't stand the looks of pity that both teachers and students gave him when they thought he wasn't paying attention. He'd been given the option to skip school today, and now he was wishing he'd accepted it.
Fortunately, the school day was going to be over soon enough. He'd managed to reach lunchtime without going to the office and asking if he could call his mother to pick him up, regardless of how tempting that would be. He just needed to get through a few more hours of the day, and then he could go and hide in his room for unhealthy amounts of time.
He sat alone, lazily tapping his fingers against the table. It felt like everyone was staring at him. He knew that likely wasn't the case, but it still made him feel weirdly self-conscious and upset. He'd much preferred last year, when everyone found him slightly unsettling and avoided him at all costs.
He really, really wished he'd just stayed home today...
