Cute.
Chihiro smiled softly, his gaze fixated on the article of clothing in front of him. It was a lavender overall dress. It was plain, but he also thought it to be extremely adorable. Plus, it would look good with one of his black shirts. Ooh, and a pair of thigh high socks and sneakers! Yes, he could already see the cute outfit planned out in his head.
However, there was one small problem, one thing that prevented Chihiro from happily buying this dress and then skipping off home to try it on — he was a boy. N-not that there was anything wrong with boys who liked dresses or skirts! He believed that everybody should be allowed to wear whatever they want as long as it's not hurting anyone. Besides, he had no right to judge people based on fashion choices when he had a rather strange clothing style himself.
But he couldn't help but feel self-conscious and worried. He'd bought things from the female section of the store, but usually only accessories or socks. He had never bought a dress before. What if someone saw him buying it? Or worse...saw him wearing it? He already looked feminine enough though, so some people would probably just think it was a normal teenage girl buying a dress for herself. And even if people recognized Chihiro and knew he was a boy, it was unlikely that they'd care either. Everybody know of Chihiro's love of cutesy and girly things, so they'd probably expect him to buy something like this.
However, he couldn't help but worry that people would judge him for wearing such clothing, even if it really wasn't different at all from the things he usually wore. Huffing, Chihiro slumped against the wall with a pout on his face. Oh, what a horrible predicament. This was the most difficult decision he'd ever had to make in his entire life!

Too expensive, too girly, too boring, too boring, too boring
Ugh. Why did shopping for clothes have to be so...annoying? It was bad enough that he was required to wear the same ridiculous uniform everyday, but now he was being forced to buy new clothes because the ones he already owned were either being lost in the chaos of his dorm or from a variety of incidents that were entirely no fault of his own. It wouldn't even be so bad if these clothes were at least interesting, but nooooo it was the same junk that everyone else wore. It was too bad he didn't live in a big city where he could, no doubt, find and wear shirts of all of his favorite bands and games and anime. That would be peak fashion, if there ever was such a thing. But alas.
Just as the blonde was about to give up and go home, he noticed a figure slumped up against the wall. It was a strange sight to see, mainly because this was a store where most people were actively shopping around and not simply bumming around. On closer inspection it looked like...a girl?! Why was there a girl slumped against the wall? While there were exceptions to the rule, most girls he knew made sure to have proper posture wherever they went. Maybe she just had a bad back or something? He approached, preparing some sage advice that would likely help her in her time of need.
"Excuse me Ma'am, I hope you know that the key to a healthy back is good posture!"
And with that, he demonstrated his "good posture" by standing up as straight as he could and flexing his muscles as much as he could manage.
Ah crap, I hope she doesn't fall for me or anything!

"Excuse me Ma'am, I hope you know that the key to a healthy back is good posture!"
Chihiro blinked in surprise, startled by the sudden voice. He hadn't heard anyone approaching, as he had been busy having an internal crisis over whether or not he should buy the very adorable dress or not. On one hand, he really liked it and would definitely regret it if he didn't buy it. On the other hand, buying it would potential leave him open to judgement and ridicu —
Oh dear, he was getting sidetracked again.
The purple-eyed boy focused his attention on the person before him — a boy with pale blonde hair and blue eyes. It made them look as though they were a foreigner, although Chihiro knew that this was not the case. He recognized the boy as an upperclassmen. A third year, if he remembered correctly. What was his name again? Su...Su...Su...
Ah, that was right! Sunohara. As for his given name, Chihiro had never heard it before so he couldn't exactly say. Well, he had actually heard someone hear it was, but he couldn't remember where. Perhaps one of Sunohara's friends had referred to him as that, and he had accidentally overheard. Or perhaps he had heard Sunohara introducing himself to someone. Either way, he couldn't remember it was.
Wait! Sunohara had referred to him as "ma'am". The rest of the words were now a fading memory, but that one stuck in his mind. He was used to being mistaken as a girl, but nobody had ever called him ma'am. It seemed far too formal. Why had he felt the need to add 'ma'am?' Oh well...Chihiro was likely overthinking it too much.
"You're... Sunohara-senpai, right?" He asked for confirmation, although he already knew the answer. "I'm Takahashi Chihiro. It's nice to meet you. And, um...well, I'm actually a boy. See? I'm wearing the male uniform." He gestured towards his school uniform, which he was still wearing. He had gone to buy clothes as soon as school had let out, and thus hadn't changed out of his uniform. "B-But I understand the confusion. I do look quite feminine..."

"You're... Sunohara-senpai, right?"
Oh?! She had heard of him?! And she had even added "-senpai" to the end of his name! That's so sweet! Ahh..."senpai". Though he usually didn't care for honorifics, he couldn't help but be filled with glee when it came from a cute, young gi-
"I'm Takahashi Chihiro. It's nice to meet you. And, um...well, I'm actually a boy. See? I'm wearing the male uniform."
And with that, the sound of glass breaking could be heard echoing in his chest as his heart shattered to pieces.
Sigh
With a great exhale of air his chest fell, his head lay low, and his breath left his body entirely. Rejected again - without even a chance to offer a response! And what kind of rejection was that?! He was a guy? Sunohara was no stranger to lies, but proclaiming to be a guy was going too fa-
And then those last words echoed in his mind again.
"See? I'm wearing the male uniform."
In one swift motion the blonde snapped back to an upright position and took a close look at the person before him for the first time.
"B-But I understand the confusion. I do look quite feminine..."
His mouth hung agape, his eyes were glazed over, and his expression now lay frozen in a state of pure shock and dismay.
W-what kind of advanced rejection is this? She's even wearing a male uniform...w-w-where would she even get something like that?!
He slowly turned towards the clothes she was standing in front, as if to offer some hope and solace...but instead, the crushing reality of the situation came down upon him, forcing a near silent, deathly wail to escape his maw.
She's even shopping for girl's clothes! There's no way she's a guy!
And thus, Sunohara lay frozen, the gears of his mind struggling to comprehend this new, terrible, and confusing world of rejection he found himself in.

Sunohara was beginning to worry Chihiro. Quite a lot, in fact. He hadn't even said one word in response to Chihiro confirming that he was, in fact, male. He just stood there with a shocked expression, eyes glazed over and mouth slightly agape. The smaller male tilted his head and frowned in concern.
"Er...Senpai? Are you alright?" he started to reach forward, but hesitantly pulled his hand back. He shouldn't touch someone if he wasn't sure they'd be okay with it. That would be extremely rude. What was Sunohara's reaction, anyway? People were obviously shocked at first when Chihiro told them his gender, but nobody had ever seemed this shocked. Hmm...was it because he was shopping in the girls' section? That would make perfect sense. He just needed an excuse for why he was here. Luckily, he had a perfectly reasonable one.
"If you're wondering why I'm shopping for girl clothes," he began, "I'm buying something for my Onee-Chan." It wasn't a lie. Well, not really. Naomi was visiting home in a few weeks, and Chihiro was planning on buying her something. He just happened to see the adorable overall dress and momentarily forgot all about his plans to buy his elder sister a present. "But...it looks like I've upset you somehow. I'm very sorry. I promise it wasn't my intention! Is there perhaps anything I can do to make it up to you?" He hated making people upset, even accidentally. It made him feel so guilty.

Sunohara Youhei wasn't a traditionally smart man. Skipping classes certainly didn't help his intellect, but he also liked to jump to conclusions rather than think things through to the end. So when presented with a situation as contradictory as this, it took all the longer for his brain to finally land on a conclusion that would be satisfactory to him. The girl's claim was already out the window, and the more she spoke, the more he was convinced his initial impression of her was accurate. With that said, there something was bugging him about his original assumption. While it made sense to dress up as a boy to more easily reject guys, wouldn't it make sense to...act more manly to go along with it as well? He watched on as she hesitated with her touch, stuttered over her words, and offered to make up for an inconvenience she had never really caused in the first place. Truthfully, it was the type of girl Sunohara often dreamed of meeting and eventually falling in love with...if only she wasn't dressed up as a man!.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, putting a hand to his chin as he slowly nodded, pretending to understand what was going on while simultaneously trying to actually understand out what was going on. He decided to start with the basics: First - for what reason would a woman want to dress as a man? Possibly...to become one? Or maybe to be as strong as a man would be? After all, it's common knowledge that men are stronger then women. Perhaps this was her attempt at growing stronger?
He finally opened his eyes, taking one last glance over her form. It would take a lot to get him to voluntarily dress up as a woman. So for this girl to go so far as to wear a male uniform... He smiled with a knowing smile, grasping her shoulder firmly and, with a confidence in his voice not unlike before, he proclaimed outloud:
"Chihiro was it? Don't worry, your secret is safe with me. In fact, I'll do you one better. I, your amazing Senpai, will teach you what it means to be a true man!"

Chihiro waited patiently as Sunohara seemed to be thinking about something. He was quite curious as to what his upperclassmen was thinking about, but thought it would be too rude to interrupt. Should he...should he leave? It didn't seem like Sunohara was paying attention to him anymore. Perhaps the conversation was over...
Before he could decide whether or not he should continue shopping, Sunohara grasped his shoulder. The sudden touch caused Chihiro to blink in surprise, tilting his head as he stared up at the blonde-haired boy. "Chihiro was it?" he asked, and Chihiro nodded in confirmation. "Don't worry, your secret is safe with me. In fact, I'll do you one better. I, your amazing Senpai, will teach you what it means to be a true man!"
"Secret?" Chihiro asked. He didn't have a secret. Well...he did, but not one he had talked about with Sunohara at all. He decided to move on from that though, and instead focused on the other part of Sunohara's claim - I, your amazing Senpai, will teach you what it means to be a true man! Did that mean Sunohara would help him become more masculine, so that people would realize that he was a guy? That would be wonderful!
"Really?" He gasped and, momentarily forgetting that he should not touch people without their permission, grasped Sunohara's hands. "Thank you, Senpai! You're really kind!"

The soft touch of her hand...the earnest way she said "Senpai"...being called "kind" for the first time in his life. It was all too good to be true. Is this what they called "Fate"? Surely he must be dreaming...but even if he was, he didn't care! He didn't want this dream to end! As his mind went wild with fantasies of the future, his gaze turned distant and smile turned into a lasting grin. Though he should have known better then to freeze up at a time like this (not once, but twice now), he couldn't help but be completely overwhelmed by the wave of positive reinforcement that had just washed over him. It wasn't until several silent moments had passed that he finally managed to drag himself back to reality.
AHEM
He coughed outloud, trying to re-orientate himself.
This is finally your chance Youhei, this isn't the time to daydream! Don't screw this up!
He coughed a few more times for good measure, and then returned to the conversation as if nothing had changed. With a nod of affirmation and a boldness in his voice he continued.
"Well, first things first!"
He sauntered over to the other side of the shop, put his hands on his hips, and gazed straight at Chihiro, proclaiming in a very self-important manner.
"Rule Number One: A man is his clothes!"
He took a moment to glance over the options before him.
"Now while what we have here is...passable."
He sighed and shrugged his shoulders in an over-exaggerated manner.
"It just isn't going to cut it. We need clothes that scream "Man!" not "Boy!". On to the next store my Kouha-no, my student!"
And with that, he marched out of the shop, chest held high and walking with a confidence both undeserved and unwarranted. The goal? To find a store that had clothes for true men.
