Date: April 14th, 2003
April 14th marked Kohaku's first day at Hikarizaka Private High School. She had begun the day incredibly nervous, her emotions an absolute mess of worries and fears. Fortunately, her class, 1-A, was lovely and full of cheerfulness -- that eased her nerves. A few of the students spoke to her between classes; she said little but kept an ear open to the idle chatter. Despite the fact that she didn’t know anyone there, she couldn’t help but feel the aura of fellowship that permeated the room.
Unfortunately, the cafeteria was not nearly as welcoming as 1-A. Lunch break had barely begun and yet the place was already bustling with energy. It was a culmination of intense sights and sounds. Chatter, shouting, clanging dishes, and eating; a chaotic mess of sensations that overwhelmed and confused her. Kohaku had arrived a little late to the cafeteria, which meant that most of the tables had already been claimed by other students. Many of the the tables were taken up by groups of mutual friends, but most of them were second- or third-years. Kohaku paid closer attention to the first-years, because they tended to be in very small groups of two or three, or alone altogether. Just like her.
She eventually gave up scanning the crowd for a completely empty table; instead, she redirected her search to find someone she recognized. It didn’t take long for her to spot a couple of familiar faces at a table on their own: Yasuda Erina and Miyahira Suzume, two girls from Kohaku’s class. She smiled as she spotted them. This was it! Her seat! She made a beeline for the table claimed by her cohorts, but almost immediately halted the trek. Doubts crossed her mind. What if they didn’t want her to be around? Kohaku bit her lip, wondering whether or not it was worth trying to speak to them. She knew they would probably welcome her with open arms, but she was still nervous. Sure, she knew who they were, but they had barely exchanged much more than names earlier that day.
She waited there for almost a minute, overcome by her worries. Eventually, though, she gave in to her desire to sit down and eat. This table was preferable to approaching someone who was even more of a stranger, from another class. She clenched her free fist – the one not holding onto her bento – and resolve burned in her bones. She could do this! She moved forward once again, and upon reaching the table, she reintroduced herself to her classmates. “Hi! I’m Inoue Kohaku, 1-A,” she said, bowing at the waist. “May I sit with you?”

The first day of school had been a whirlwind of excitement, and Erina was eager to be carried away with its gusts. Hikarizaka was new territory, but that just meant there were more people to meet and adventures to be had. Leaving her old school and friends had been hard, certainly, but that didn't mean the starry-eyed new first year had to be miserable in her new surroundings. High school was a new world. She felt so grown up already!
Her enthusiasm, however, was not shared by everyone, namely Miyahira Suzume. Not that Erina had noticed. Her desk was near the wall, and she had taken the first opportunity to introduce herself to the only student within speaking distance, chattering incessantly as her classmate listened in dumbfounded silence, occasionally nodding or offering an awkward smile. Lunch break was no exception. Bento in hand, she had followed her to the cafeteria, giggling and talking the whole way until they had settled into a rare empty table. Miyahira's brother, a second year, had fought the turbulent crowds and snagged an extra sandwich for his sister on her first day, which he dropped off before hurrying away with his own friends.
"Your brother's so nice, Miyahira-san~" Erina chirped. The quieter girl simply mumbled an agreement, fiddling with the plastic wrap on her food until it opened. "Anyone who brings food is really, really nice, don't you think?"
She popped open the covering of her own food and clapped excitedly at the sight of her own meal. Most days at her old school, she had eaten school lunches, but her mother had agreed to prepare something especially for her first day of high school. The sight of the salmon, rice, and other sides contained within set her mouth watering, and her brown eyes glowed with delight.
"Itadakimaaaasu~!"
And she was off, shoveling food into the blackhole that was her mouth, chopsticks moving at supersonic speeds. Miyahira jumped at the sudden movement, watching the girl with wide, alarmed eyes. Then... She laughed. A quiet but strong laugh, which she stifled with her free hand, her still uneaten sandwich clutched in the other. Erina paused midbite to glance over at her companion, rice still hanging from her lips. She tilted her head, mildly confused by the girl's sudden change in demeanor, but soon joined in the laughter. It was good Suzume was so cheerful now! That meant they were getting along really, really well, right?
“Hi! I’m Inoue Kohaku, 1-A. May I sit with you?”
The interruption caused both girls to turn instinctively, their laughter dying down as they observed the newcomer. Erina perked up immediately at the sight of her, eyes falling on the large, purple butterfly clip that adorned their classmate's hair.
"Ah! I remember Inoue-san!" she exclaimed, bouncing in her seat. "Because Inoue-san had the cutest hair in the class today!" She dropped her chopsticks onto the table with a clatter, and her hands flew up to cup her face as she gazed adoringly at the accessory. It was so charming! So elegant! Like a butterfly landing calmly in the grass!
"Your butterfly is super, suuuper cute~!" she squealed, eyes sparkling.
"Ah... You can sit, Inoue-san," Miyahira added quietly, addressing the question the pigtailed girl had ignored. "I'm Miyahira Suzume."
"Oh, right!" Erina squeaked, brought back to the present by the other girl's more sensible response. "I'm Yasuda Erina~"

“Ah! I remember Inoue-san! Because Inoue-san had the cutest hair in the class today!”
The duo took a few seconds to react to Kohaku’s greeting. Yasuda reacted first, quickly breaking the silence with excited exclamations. Her hands, previously occupied with her lunch, rose up to cup her own face, and her eyes were drawn up to Kohaku’s hair. Finally, the she began to bounce in her seat. Her reaction was unexpected, and Kohaku took a hesitant step back as the girl became animated by strong adoration.
“Your butterfly is super, suuuper cute~!”
Oh! The butterfly! She had forgotten about the hair clip adorning her head. She had picked it out that morning because it was her favourite and felt that it would give her a boost of confidence. She had no idea she would get such an eager reaction by wearing it. Kohaku blushed, a little embarrassed by the attention, but she also smiled.
“A-ah! Thank you~” she chirped after a short pause, patting the butterfly lovingly with her free hand. It deserved the gesture for being such a cute accessory!
“You can sit, Inoue-san,” the other girl, Miyahira added quietly. “I’m Miyahira Suzume.” She looked a little taken aback by her companion’s energy.
“Oh, right! I’m Yasuda Erina~” The introduction, coming last rather than first, came off as a complete afterthought. Kohaku giggled at her classmate’s earnestness.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you both!” she exclaimed. Warmth brought on by fellowship filled her heart. It was true that she still barely knew the two girls, but the meeting had gone better than she had hoped, so she couldn’t help but feel happy! The particular compliment, “Inoue-san had the cutest hair in the class today,” was an especially delightful detail that she carefully planted deep in the greenhouses of her mind, under the “Wonderful Compliments Garden.” She hadn’t been expecting any compliments at all, let alone one so sweet. It was only noon, and she was positively soaring!

The bell rang after math class signaling lunch had begun. Mayu put her things into her desk and grabbed the bento her mom had made for her before heading off to the cafeteria. While walking she had spotted many upperclassmen heading in that direction, and she started to grow wary that there wouldn’t be any seats left.
Mayu could hear the chattering of students just a few feet from the entrance as she arrived. She stopped in her tracks. She could feel her face starting to heat up and her palms were already sweaty. Mayu started to hesitate about whether or not she wanted to go in. The thought of tripping and falling and making a fool of herself filled her mind. But at the same time she was very hungry. Her stomach growled and even though she was hesitant she made up her mind, hugging herself and stepping into the cafeteria.
When she entered, she spotted most of her classmates already eating with a few people they had just met or friends they knew. Everywhere Mayu looked there seemed to be groups of people. She searched for a friendly crowd, but most seemed a little too intimidating.
Time was ticking while she stood looking around. Anxiety was overcoming her thoughts, and she felt like eyes were upon her. She started heading towards the exit, feeling regret she even stepped into this place…
“Oh, right! I’m Yasuda Erina~”
Mayu jolted at the loud, clear voice that cut through the chatter. It sounded familiar, so she looked up and saw her. The pigtailed girl from her class that wouldn’t stop speaking to the girl in front of her, Miyahira. Yasuda was loud, but cheerful and friendly. Compared to others, she seemed very open, like she could talk to anyone. Mayu thought even though she was shy, Yasuda would be willing to make friends with her. After all, she wouldn’t stop talking to Miyahira even though she was so quiet, and now she was eating lunch with her.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you both!” responded the third girl, who was sitting with them. Mayu recognized her with her green hair and butterfly clip. She couldn’t recall her name, but she was in her class too.
After a few seconds of listening and debating, Mayu channeled all her courage and made her decision. Nervously, she headed towards their table. When she arrived, she took a deep breath and squeezed her bento. “Um hello, is it possible for me to sit here,” Mayu blurted, standing there with her brow drawn together with worry. She questioned whether or not she had made the right decision.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you both!”
Kohaku's amicable reply drew yet another smile from Erina's seemingly endless supply, and she turned to Miyahira, brown eyes still glimmering.
"Inoue-san's clip is-"
"Um hello, is it possible for me to sit here?"
At the abrupt appearance of a fourth voice, Erina's head shot up, and Miyahira's gaze followed. Yet another familiar face stood before them, clutching a bento and looking rather nervous. Recognition lit up Erina's expression, and she nodded enthusiastically, chirping a quick "Yes, yes~!" and waving eagerly toward the nearest empty seat. That was the girl who sat behind Miyahira! What was her name again...?
"You're... Himura-san, right?" Miyahira offered the new girl a gentle smile that seemed to sympathize with her plight, though such subtleties passed Erina unnoticed.
"Ah~! Yes, yes, Himura-san!"
The louder girl clapped her hands together as the name came back to her, and she eyed the table's newest addition with interest. Miyahira, Inoue, Himura... She was meeting so many new people already! Making friends was eas-
"Ah, no, wait! I almost forgot introductions again!" the girl exclaimed, interrupting her own thoughts. "Do-over! Okay~?" Dramatically, she took a deep breath to calm herself, pausing for a moment to close her eyes as she mentally reset the last few seconds and started over.
"I'm Yasuda Erina! It's really nice to meet you Himura-san~!"
With her part said, she turned to look at Miyahira expectantly, who stared back blankly for a moment, lost by her talkative classmate's odd ritual, before suddenly snapping back to attention.
"Oh... uh... I'm Miyahira Suzume. I look forward to class together."
The quiter girl shot Himura another awkward smile, as if to say I don't get it either, but she seems nice, and Erina's gaze fell upon Inoue next.

Kohaku had noticed the newcomer before the other girls had. Himura Mayu, another classmate; she had passed by their table, looking to and fro for something unknown. Her eyebrows arched upwards and she hugged herself tightly as she scanned the crowds. She wanted a place to sit, has as Kohaku had moments ago. She briefly considered calling out to Himura, but the idea generated a jolt of nervousness in her stomach. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. It was... It was impossible! Just asking the other two for a seat was a miracle in of itself; by now, all of Kohaku's social daring had depleted. Her "peopling" ability had run out of uses! Sorry, Himura!
Kohaku continued to greet the others, but after sharing a few smiles, she couldn't help but glance back in Himura's direction. She was watching them, her composure much more than nervous than Kohaku's had been only moments ago. After a deep breath she approached their table and blurted out, “Um, hello, is it possible for me to sit here?”
Barely any time passed before Yasuda's enthusiastic reply, “Yes, yes~!” In mere seconds, she moved on to introductions. Miyahira, most likely caught off-guard by Yasuda's energy, took a few moments to follow up with her own introduction. Yasuda's gaze fell on Kohaku, expectation in her eyes.
“Hello,” she said, cheeks turning a rosy red. “I'm, ah, Inoue Kohaku. I remember you from before!” She blurted out the last part; it was an afterthought that she had not planned to add, but her mouth moved before her mind. She turned her head subtly, watching Yasuda's reaction from her peripheral vision. The girl looked satisfied. N-not that Kohaku was intimidated by her! She just wanted... to appease her classmates. Yes, as long as they were all happy, she would be happy.
“Oh, Yasuda-san...” she began, pausing to formulate her thoughts. Yasuda had been so nice to her, and even complimented her! So! Kohaku had to return the compliment! “On what you said earlier... well, I think y-your hair is very cute, too!” Her voice squeaked a bit as she said it, the uncertainty in her voice bubbling to the surface. Then she looked at Miyahira, uttering much more quietly, “A-and Miyahira-san, thanks for inviting me to sit.” Ah, so much "peopling"... She would make a good impression on these girls, even if it killed her.
She wondered about the other three. Perhaps they could give her some insight into how this school worked? Ah, but they were first-years, just like her. They probably knew just as much as she did in this environment. The thought gave Kohaku some comfort. At least she wasn't a complete nobody. In this unfamiliar kingdom, she had fellows who her shared her inexperience.

"Hello, I'm, ah, Inoue Kohaku. I remember you from before!"
Erina smiled at Inoue's introduction. Yes, she was cute! Really cute! Her butterfly clip definitely suited her! And she had remembered Himura too! This was wonderful! They were all in the same class and would be friends and do lots of fun things together and could walk home together and talk during lunch like they were now and...
"On what you said earlier..."
The transition pulled the girl from the delightful future she had already begun to construct, and she straightened up attentively. Miyahira shifted beside her as well, lifting her head curiously.
"Well, I think y-your hair is very cute too! A-and Miyahira-san, thanks for inviting me to sit."
Oh! She really was cute! So, so cute! Erina grinned shamelessly at the compliment, and Miyahira offered her own sheepish smile at the mention of her name.
Though she had firmly resolved from the beginning to make the best of it and be excited when she had moved to Hikarizaka, it had still been a little sad leaving her old friends behind. She had nothing to worry about now though! Everyone here was so nice and cute! High school was going to be fun!
"See? We were definitely, definitely meant to be friends~"
