hope and petrichor

It was morning, but it did not seem so, with the large grey clouds overhead and the chill in the dancing wind. Rain was falling, even as various students made their way to their schools... well, in this particular part of the city, there was but one school most go to. These academic pilgrims, unwilling or otherwise, were bedecked in gear to keep out the wetness of the world, whether they were in raincoats and boots or simply carrying umbrellas... well, at least the ones that had to walk and were not brought to the gates of the institution by vehicle. The uphill slope was already a challenge, and the inclement weather made it all the more difficult to climb... ah, but there was one who was heartened, despite the countenance of the sky.
Mizukami Ayumu was an ordinary human, if a little strange in thought and deed. He was no sort of merfolk or water spirit who gained strength from precipitation and muddy puddles; just a slightly weird teenager, one of many in a trek to Hikarizaka's high school. He would be lying if he said that he was easily making the walk; the path was steep and at some points slippery, and so he had to be careful and gradual and yet not too slow, or else he would be late. Still, despite all these... he was happy. It was morning, and it was raining, and as he toted his trusty umbrella to guard his head and hopefully his body from the downpour, he considered that perhaps... that was already a reason to be happy about. Already, unconsciously, he was slightly smiling. He made up for the difficulty with enthusiasm, as he climbed, as he walked.
Some people liked to associate rain with sadness, with gloom; perhaps because it was easy to think that the heavens were weeping at the pressing of a storm. Ayumu was of a markedly different opinion; he could understand how sunny days could be considered cheerful with all the brightness, but sometimes they felt all too hot and annoying to him... although that just might be his childhood in a tropical country talking; Hikarizaka wasn't bad in sunshine... but that could not so easily change his liking of rain. Not that he wished typhoons on the general area he was in... just a little drizzle, and a little gale...
...already he felt hopeful; today was the start of the day. Anything could happen; he could meet a friend, or make a new one... even if he wasn't all that good with the latter. Maybe he could think up a new poem today, or finally get that little niggling story idea into cohesion. Sure, there was just as much chance of misfortune happening, but he felt strong enough, even as the wind played tricks with him and got the raindrops past the shield of his umbrella into his uniform and his hair and his eyes... strong enough to endure whatever it was that this day was going to throw at him... and it might even be fun.
Merrily he trotted on, contemplating all these things. The scent of rain was lovely... it was called petrichor, was it not? Or something...
...perhaps today I could even see her again... OC: ...a little bit lost on what date to put in.

Mundane.
The word crossed his mind several times, it being the only word he could find to describe this day. Then again, he was hard pressed to find a day the word didn't describe. The only difference being the droopy weather surrounding the city. And, as Akiyama Sukoto trudged towards his school, that fact didn't worry him in the slightest. After all, he'd chosen to walk today, he always did. If he hadn't wished to, he was sure his mother or one of their few hired workers at their home could've taken him there. Nevertheless, opting for an umbrella, just in case, had been plenty for him.
Sukoto precariously climbed up the hill, though he did nearly misplace a foot from time to time. He never really did like the rain, it was too oppressive for him. Too weighing. Although he could handle it, he couldn't stop his usual half-scowl from deepening slightly. It didn't really help his walk, but with his form, it didn't really hinder it either. So, as with always, indifference reigned. Though, he did suppose the wintry air that the rain warranted was better than the heat. Ah, how he despised the heat. Though, he didn't particularly enjoy frigidness either.
Autumn would probably be the best, he thought to himself.
Lost in his thoughts, he failed to notice his matched pace with another, grey haired individual with the same occupied mind. If he did notice, he wouldn't have really know him, although he had seen him around the school from time to time, as all students did. Sukoto's drudging and Ayumu's energetic walking were stark contrasts to each other. And, though they were about three feet apart, the water they scattered easily reached the other.
Akiyama's mind subconsciously noticed the advancing gate, and silently he thanked himself that he'd left on time, though he didn't suppose it really mattered. So, continuing his equal walk with Ayumu, whom he didn't know, he stayed a stranger to his surroundings for the time being.

Strangers they were, truly, and strangers they would remain, probably, perhaps; after all, each was lost in their own deliberations, in their own whims, foreign to the world where they were passing by... and so even if they were near, they were not. But...
Ayumu idly noticed the light splashing his footsteps created... and in turn the ones that the person across him, beside him, created... they reached each other, lightly staining the lowest parts of their pants, as stepping was wont to do on a rainy day. Now, the other student--- for that was all he knew the other to be, someone whose face seemed vaguely familiar, for being in the same school, but beyond that, nothing else--- seemed to be somewhat grumpy... or at least in a foul mood. Still, it was none of his business... but he supposed the scattering of drops might be inconveniencing him, or something... and in any case he probably should stay away... so he made a slight movement away from him, to make that three feet distance a little larger.
That slight movement was a mistake.
Ayumu liked rain, but there were things commonly associated with it that he did not find as lovely. There were frogs, which were rather gross, in his opinion; colds, which one caught if one was wet in the downpour for too long; mud, which was filthy; and accidents, brought about by the slippery ground. It was just Ayumu's misfortune that... the latter happened to him at this exact moment today. Simply put, he slipped, back first... toppling like a domino towards he who he did not know yet, was named Akiyama.
"Uwa!"
A crash, and a frantic sitting up and turning around. He hoped that wasn't too much of an embarrassment, or a spectacle... and he hoped that the other person was all right.
"...sorry about that!"
...and that he was not angry about it, either.

His strongest instinct was to kick.
Of course, he didn't actually do that, a fact that put both he and the one that rocketed towards him into a slightly better situation than going to the hospital. However, he did initiate the beginnings of a kick, which put him off kilter when he attempted to halt its progress. It was because of this that he began to stumble back for quite the while, so much so that he saw the one named Ayumu sail past him. It was now his instinct to either grapple or punch, but he ignored both, mainly because the overwhelming since of falling backwards was the loudest scream in his mind.
Though, that didn't mean that he actually screamed. In fact, his decent towards the ground was done quietly, and near contentedly. Mainly because he hadn't the time to process the events that occurred, having happened in mere seconds. By the time he did take notice of what was happening, he had already become soaked, the water from the ground puddling around his back.
He just lay there, thinking about absolutely nothing at all, other than: This rain...This rain is...
All in all, he hadn't the current mindset to properly for anger, or sadness, or embarrassment, perhaps not even the mindset to form any emotion at all, just those thoughts circling 'round and 'round in his head until a voice, quiet and muffled, broke him out of this state.
"...s--ry a-b--t t--t."
It was then that he finally blinked the haziness away, and cleared his mind of the repeating words that he no longer cared for, the words that had no final completion. He then lifted himself up slowly to a sitting position. His mind was able to decipher what the words were actually meant to be, and from whom they came, so he attempted to look at him. However, the sun being a wake-up call to his dazed mind, was entirely too bright for his wide-eyed stare, causing him to narrow his eyes in a confused (And able to seem wrongly menacing) glare in order to shield his eyes from the light.
He then slowly stepped to his feet, his hazed thoughts not yet able to formulate a reply, and walked over to the other one, looking down on him. He did not notice that the sun would've cast a shadow on his face, did not notice much else in fact. His mind blanked but, after a few moments of silence, he lent a hand to the one who fell.
"No use in sitting around all day, right?"
