Fortunately for Karu, his mind need not wander for long. He was broken from his reverie when Otomo suddenly switched from speaking Japanese to. . . English. There it was; Karu's mother-tongue, in Japan. He had not expected to meet a fellow English-speaker anywhere in Hikarizaka. Karu was born in Canada, from a Japanese mother, knowing English his whole life. After his sister got into an accident, sending her into a coma, Karu had moved to Japan to await the rest of his family's arrival (he lived with his grandparents until then). Hearing English brought back fond memories of his childhood . . . suddenly he started to feel awkward standing up while Otomo was lying there against the wall. Karu crouched down and looked face-to-face with the young man.
"No, I'm not," Karu replied in English to Otomo's question. "I came from Canada." Karu didn't mind going into detail of why he came to Canada, but he doubted anyone would want to know, especially in this situation. "It's s-sort of a long story. I could tell you sometime when you're feeling better." He knew from their sudden switch to English, they were probably throwing off the other two, Sakagami and Narukami. Still, the switch to his first language was something special to him. It gave him some sort of connection with Otomo; something he couldn’t relate to anybody else with. Maybe he could talk to Otomo sometime, in English?
He felt like he should help with something. It wasn’t right to have Otomo sitting down, leaning against a wall. He had suffered quite a bit, so he should be taken to his room to rest, shouldn't he? “Are y-you sure you’re okay? Do you want to be taken to your room? You should be taken there to rest,” Karu persisted, reverting back to Japanese. He glanced at Sakagami (raising one eyebrow), giving her a look that meant something like "help me out here."

Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
Koji pressed the cold pack of ice against his shoulders. The ice crackled against the young man’s hotter skin, hopefully soothing whatever lingering pain he felt there in his shoulders after having been put into a tight headlock by the men who had fled the scene. His cheeks were tinged a rosy red. Tomoyo was not so oblivious to assume it was merely because of physical exertion, nor was it only from the little tails of steam which drifted up this way from the hot springs. Rather, it was likely the awkwardness Koji felt from realizing he’d said some embarrassing things.
Or, maybe it was because he...
No, that couldn’t be it. Koji was infatuated with Kyou. For some reason, by remembering this fact, a wave of relief washed over Tomoyo, easing her unsettled nerves. She scolded herself for having imagined it could be anything else.
After all, being who she was... lacking such girlish charm... No, she was plenty girly, right? She was full of girlish charm. Plus, helping Koji so tenderly like this meant she was full of that feminine, nurturing instinct. Like a mother. Yeah. She didn’t need anyone’s feelings to confirm that. But, why had her thoughts deviated so far from their original path? It wasn’t like she wanted Koji to think of her in that way. She would just like to be seen that way in general, by everyone.
Although, why was she so concerned about this now, in this situation? Perhaps it was the idea of Koji liking Kyou that made her thoughts travel this far. But even then, that wasn’t a good enough reason...
No, she knew why. There was one person in particular who she wanted to think of her in that way. And even then, it wasn't much of a want, if it could even be called that. The thought of it was somehow appealing, though.
Thinking it was best to ignore it all, she gave a small sigh through her nose and looked at Densetsu Karu, who was now at eye level with them. Densetsu was a slightly unusual family name, although that wasn’t the only thing unusual about him. His pronunciation was a little off. It wasn’t bad in any way, but it didn’t sound like native Japanese.
The only reason Tomoyo took notice of Densetsu’s non-native accent was because... Koji answered him in English. The sudden switch threw her off, and even Tomoyo needed a few seconds to realize he was no longer speaking in Japanese (it was easy to figure it out, because she stopped being able to understand what he was saying, but even then, the abrupt change was weird to say the least, and it didn’t help that she was still hung up on her previous thoughts).
Although Tomoyo couldn’t claim to be fluent in English in even the slightest bit, she could understand it well enough, having taken school English classes since middle school. It was required of students in most parts of Japan, after all. Yes, many students didn’t care about English, and many were poor at it, but Tomoyo was decent with the language. She couldn’t speak it particularly well, and it was sometimes difficult to catch on to what English speakers were saying if they spoke quickly, but Tomoyo could at least understand the basic idea of what was being said.
Koji’s English was much easier for her to understand than Karu’s English, due to the more familiar English with a Japanese accent. The exchanged words between the two were simple enough. The conversation was comprised of Koji claiming to be fine, and then he basically asked if Densetsu was foreign-born. No, the boy wasn’t from Japan. He came from... Canada? At least, that’s what Tomoyo thought he said. Thankfully, the two would save the story for another time.
It had been bothersome trying to comprehend what they were saying. Tomoyo was grateful for the transition back to Japanese.
“Are y-you sure you’re okay?” Densetsu asked Koji. “Do you want to be taken to your room? You should be taken there to rest,” he said. He sounded insistent on his proposal, and he even looked over at Tomoyo as if asking her to back him up.
She caught on to the hint. Yeah, it’d be best if Koji rested in his room instead, where at least he could lie down, spread himself out, and relax a little more in the privacy of his own room.
“He’ll be lonely without a girl like me keeping him company,”
Tomoyo said jokingly to Densetsu, then turned her head to look at Koji sitting beside her. “But anyway, he’s right, Koji. Let’s get you to your room.” She stood up and extended a helping hand for him. “Even though you might feel fine, you should still check yourself for bruises and just relax for a while.” [/blockquote]

The other passerby... His name is Densetsu, isn't it? Quite a strange name, but catchy enough to remember, as if he comes from a superhero movie. He's from overseas, too. The other side of the Pacific, a country I have not known much about except the Niagara Falls and Vancouver, where my parents are living. Maybe I can ask him a bit more when dinner comes.
Now, for the matter at hand, the "victim" cannot stay in this corridor forever. Futhermore, four is definitely a crowd here. We have to move. As if on cue, Sakagami said: “But anyway, he’s right, Koji. Let’s get you to your room. Even though you might feel fine, you should still check yourself for bruises and just relax for a while.”
Even though Sakagami is a strong girl, I don't want to let her carry Otomo to his room all by herself, especially when there are two guys available. It doesn't matter that she's our school's heroine. It's men's duty to help women doing physical works. That's how it should be. I decided to cut in:
"Sakagami-san, may I help Koji-san going to his room instead. I think you have been troubled enough. Leave the rest to me and Densetsu-san". I turn toward the water guy after finishing my request.

The soothing sensation of the ice was most welcome. Not only was it easing the pain of bruising, but it was also helping me to cool down, and collect my thoughts. My mind seemed to be a little rattled after my encounter, I was barely able to keep coherent in my conversation with Densetsu-san in English. My mind returned to a key point of this trip. To do as Okazaki had suggested. Be bold. Be confident. To reveal my true feelings for a certain violet-haired, fellow senior. I was sure he had seen her, wearing her hair up, to keep her long purple locks dry. However, I was forgetting I had company, and I, was being spoken to.
"Ah, I won't pry then. Sorry if my English was hard to follow... For all of you." I apologized. pressing the cold frozen water to my shoulder. Pulling back my kimono, I revealed my shoulder. It had indeed gone rather red. I decided it best to slip the ice pack under my kimono, and tie it tighter to help the pack pressed against it. I think a good rest would do me the world of good after my rather interesting evening. Surrounded by thugs, and then saved by a fair maiden. Wasn't it supposed to be the other way around? Was the boy not supposed to save the girl, sweep her off her feet, and then she would steal a kiss from her champion?
I doubted very much that Tomoyo would appreciate even a thankful peck on the cheek. I suspected even a hug would be unwanted. However, the one thought that wracked my mind, was the fact that I had an overwhelming urge to embrace her. Though I tried to keep as calm as possible, I now realized just what those goons could've done to me. The very fact that Tomoyo showed up, and they scattered like crows do when they're being chased by a cat, meant I'd been spared a probable harsh beating. Bottling up my feelings for the time being, I paid attention to Densetsu-san.
“Are y-you sure you’re okay? Do you want to be taken to your room? You should be taken there to rest,”
I nodded. Though I'd had some worse pains in my life, getting punched in the stomach that hard was up there on the scale. However, nothing had been damaged, at least, not permanently. I took another sip of the ice-cold water, letting it cool me internally. I found myself to be oddly thirsty, thus, I guzzled half the bottle in no time.
“He’ll be lonely without a girl like me keeping him company,”
I chuckled, albeit a little nervously. It was quite unlike me to blush as I did. I'd never, ever felt awkward around girls... Except maybe for Fujibayashi-san, but that was another story. This was Tomoyo I was talking about. Unlike Kyou, Tomoyo and I were good enough friends to be on a first name basis. I somehow found myself drawing comparisons to her, and her amethyst-eyed senior. Both were very strong-willed girls. Both were fairly popular, though perhaps Kyou received a little too much attention from some of the younger female student body. I'd obviously heard of many clubs trying to vy for Tomoyo's membership, so her popularity wasn't in doubt. However, one thing that set them apart, other than pointing out obvious physical, and personality differences was clear. Tomoyo was fighting to become the student president. I hadn't the faintest idea why. They were much too bound to harsh rules. So perhaps Tomoyo sought to change that.
“But anyway, he’s right, Koji. Let’s get you to your room.”
Tomoyo held out her hand for me. To help me up. I sat there for a few seconds, gazing up at her.
“Even though you might feel fine, you should still check yourself for bruises and just relax for a while.”
That was true. I could have unseen bruises, and I most certainly didn't feel like taking off any articles of clothing in front of her to be appropriate, even if she turned away. Tomoyo was a girl, and any decent man would not strip in front of a girl. Unless of course, she was his girlfriend. I molded my lips upward for a small smile, as I took Tomoyo's hand, and allowed both her's, and my own strength to pull myself up, however, I still felt a little dizzy, and I found myself holding her opposite shoulder for support. From behind, it must've looked very suspicious. I chuckled again. No longer a little nervous.
I was very nervous.
"Oh... I'm..." I began, taking my hand off of Tomoyo's shoulder, "sorry about that. I guess I'm still shaken... I, uh... Thank you again. For all your help Tomoyo. I don't think I could ask for a better friend."

There seemed to be an awkward tension between Otomo and Sakagami. He had noticed earlier, but he dismissed it for his imagination. But now. . . the way Kojiro was blushing is what convinced Karu. Perhaps it was only the hot steam of the springs, or the fact that blood was rushing to his face from his encounter with those bullies. Whatever the reason, Karu couldn't shake the feeling that something more was going on between the two. Maybe they were romantically involved with each other?
Thankfully, Sakagami got Karu's hint, and helped Otomo stand up to be taken to his room. He stood up shakily, and being disoriented, he gripped Sakagami's other shoulder for support. By the way he was stammering, it sounded like it was accidental. Was it just his imagination, or was Kojiro was acting as nervous and giddy as Karu would around Aizawa-senpai? There was definitely something odd going on. Maybe it was some sort of misunderstanding. He should ask them about it later . . . maybe not; that would get much too awkward for everyone.
Karu realized that Narukami, Otomo, and those thugs all knew who Sakagami was. She was obviously had some sort of reputation. What had she done that had gotten her to be so popular (and feared)? And now he knew her, too. Maybe she could introduce him to some of her friends, sometime? It would really help him in his friend search. Every since he moved to Japan, Karu had tried his best to reach out and meet more people, but he was usually too shy and nervous. Even at the hot springs, that was his only reason for coming; to meet some new friends. So far, he had met quite a few people since he joined school. Mostly it was luck: coming across Kojiro being bullied like that, and when he met Aizawa-senpai, he... Augh, why are you thinking about her so much today, you idiot? Karu silently berated himself.
"Sakagami-san, may I help Koji-san going to his room instead. I think you have been troubled enough. Leave the rest to me and Densetsu-san," Narukami said. He turned to Karu, and who smiled back a response. Karu agreed that Sakagami had done enough. She could leave the rest to he and Narukami. "Yes, I insist," Karu added. "We can take Otomo-san to his room." Then he flashed another smile, and turned to Kojiro. "Can you walk?"

Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
Tomoyo helped haul Koji to his feet. He was more unsteady than she thought he’d be, even needing to support himself on her shoulder when he rose up to stand up. That made it all the more obvious that he needed to take time to recover within the quiet of his own room, rather than sitting outside, leaning here against a hard wall that offered little comfort for someone who’d nearly gotten beaten up.
She didn’t see why he should be apologizing for his less than graceful movements, but he was. It couldn’t really be helped that he was clumsy right now; he was still disoriented from the fight, after all. Nevertheless, Tomoyo could only regard Koji’s words as sincere, despite how gushy and overly sentimental they seemed. She knew he wasn’t lying and that he didn’t mean to exaggerate when he said he couldn’t ask for a better friend, but...
“That sounds too grand,”
Tomoyo demurred, her face feeling a little warmer than usual. Koji seemed to be the kind of person who made a lot of big statements. It wasn’t exactly tiring... but it was something like that. Still, it wasn’t annoying in any sense of the word. Not yet, at least. Tomoyo found it difficult to pinpoint exactly what it was. “Although, knowing you feel that way... It makes me happy, somehow.” Perhaps she felt this way because his seemingly lofty words came from the heart. This much she knew. “Sakagami-san,” Narukami’s voice caught her attention again. Tomoyo took a step back and raised her head to look at him. “May I help Koji-san going to his room instead. I think you have been troubled enough. Leave the rest to me and Densetsu-san.”Tomoyo stood there looking thoughtful for a short moment. "I really haven't been troubled at all," she admitted. "But..." Leaving Koji in the hands of the other two right now... would that be alright? Densetsu’s insistence helped her make up her mind. Besides, she couldn’t enter the males’ living arrangements anyway, so she had little reason to tag along any further than here. Tomoyo nodded. “I understand. Thanks, you two,” she said to Narukami and Densetsu, a gentle smile gracing her features. “Koji,” her gaze landed on him. “Feel better soon, okay?” With that said, she turned from them and started away, looking back over her shoulder to wave the small group farewell. ... Now that I think about it... I almost forgot about the students who started the fight in the first place. Tomoyo looked ahead with a troubled expression. Those guys were still roaming free here, weren’t they? Even though they might not bother Koji again... they’ll probably cause trouble for other students. Her eyelids dropped and she let out an exasperated sigh. What reason did they have for coming on a trip like this if they were going to be making a commotion? An onsen was meant for rest and relaxation. Those people would no doubt disturb the peace. ... Well, she would have to do something about them, wouldn’t she? [exit] [/blockquote]
