For the Love of Food

"Thank you," he said, taking the tuna sandwich. Karu wasn't picky about sandwiches, and he especially liked tuna. If the tuna had melted cheese on it, even better. He took a bite, chewing with his mouth closed, then swallowed. As expected, the two didn't have any problem with being called "interesting." Yasuda-san went as far as saying that they could stick together as first years. He nodded, smiling, as a reply. He hoped getting friends would be this easy in school.
Then, Mizukami commented on his surname. Well, it certainly was unusual, but he didn't know who to blame for that. It wasn't like there was a puppet-master behind all actions and aspects of his life, who gave him some weird surname for some sort of odd symbolism. Karu didn't mind his surname, though; the meaning was interesting. "Yeah," he agreed, taking a second bite of his sandwich (admittedly, he had almost forgotten about the tuna lunch). "I guess it is odd." He needed to continue talking, otherwise he'd never keep a good impression for these two.
He chuckled at Mizukami's description of hedgehogs. "Fast, spiky, and blue, you say? I heard those kind of hedgehog wear shoes, too," Karu added. It was quite the conversation. Yasuda switched the subject around a lot. Somehow they had gotten from discussing food to hedgehogs, and now they were onto the topic of picnics. She was singing an interesting tune.
"Of course," he responded to the idea of a picnic. "But like Mizukami-senpai said, you may want to bring your own food so that we don't run out so quickly. The more, the better, right?"

Erina listened attentively as she popped her last piece of sushi into her mouth, seemingly satisfied for the time being. “Maybe Densetsu-san is the descendant of a great, legendary hero!” she suggested. “Like, with a sword and everything. That would be neat~” She paused to envision it-- the young boy beside her dressed gallantly and riding into danger. The role didn’t quite suit him, but it was amusing to picture it.
The girl remained lost in her strange daydream until Mizukami and Densetsu both directly addressed her regarding her picnic. “Well, of course Ill bring my own food to my own picnic,” she grinned sheepishly. “But everyone else should bring lots and lots too so it lasts a long, long time!” She smiled and continued humming happily at this thought.
“Densetsu-san can be a special guest. A famous hero at my picnic!” she giggled. “And you can fight any monsters that come to steal our food. I bet there will be lots of ants! Big, scary ants!” She made a large motion with her arms, and furrowed her brow in an odd attempt at a scary face.

He chuckled at Densetsu-san for getting his little reference. When the conversation was with most people who did not know him that much yet, a reference like that would probably be left hanging in the air, ignored. While the taller first-year would probably not get every random jibe he makes, he was happy that a little insert of his was recognized. "Yasuda-san probably won't be able to catch and eat that particular hedgehog, though..."
It had been a pleasant conversation; Yasuda-san brought fun with her words, changing the current topic to this and that, and the randomness was something Ayumu found funny, in the good sense. They had gone from food to hedgehogs to Densetsu-san's family name, and now heroes and ants. A lot of things came to mind, and considering the focus of their discussion was constantly shifting, he probably won't be able to say them all... it was evolving to a sort-of game, at least for the white-haired sophomore.
That would be certainly surreal, giant ants facing off against the medieval swordsmen of... legend. "If ants were made larger, they'd be really strong, right?" he posited. "Because they have a better proportion of strength to size..." he trailed off. "But then, maybe ants won't survive if they're that big... so Densetsu-san can poke them to death." His tone, his voice, his diction, were all light, all airy.
The Mizukami noted that Yasuda-san had finally stopped consuming the food like a vacuum cleaner, and proceeded to estimate just how much she had eaten, even as he picked another sushi. Even though Yasuda-san was finished, and he was not, Yasuda-san seemed to have eaten quite a good chunk of their rations... She ate a lot, but at least it was a finite amount.
"So you get full, too." he said, concluding. He looked thoughtful as he did so.

OOC: Sorry, this post is a little on the short side.“Maybe Densetsu-san is the descendant of a great, legendary hero! Like, with a sword and everything. That would be neat~”
Descendant, huh...of course that was unlikely, and he'd never know, but entertaining the thought made him smirk. Maybe he was just striving for something more interesting. Seemingly, his current lifestyle was starting to bore him. The last time he had enjoyed himself immensely was months ago; he had been with his sister, one of the only people who made him feel special. In the same way, Yasuda-san gave him a similar feeling. He remembered with sick realization that his little sister also used to called him a "legendary hero" when they were younger. Suddenly, any enjoyment he may have had left in the conversation drained from him. In its place was a strong desire to leave the place, but he tried to resist it and remain civil.
"So you want me to fight off giant ants..." he murmured, attempting to keep his mind off of his growing need to leave. He looked over at Yasuda-san. It seemed that the little consumer was finally satisfied (for the moment). Karu couldn't eat another bite; just like the little interest he had felt in the conversation, his appetite had suddenly drained from him. He looked at the scenery of the park, grimacing as a feeling of depression spread over him. The thought of his sister, stuck in a coma so many miles away was too much for him. Yet he stayed, if only to keep his status with his companions.

Giant ants sounded kind of scary the more they discussed it. Erina considered Mizukami’s observations. She didn’t know much about ants, but what he’d said sounded about right. She’d seen ants proudly scurry about with crumbs and scraps twice their own size. A giant one could probably pick her up without a problem. Kidnapped by ants… What a frightening thought!
Mizukami’s second comment made her giggle, and she relaxed immediately. Densetsu-san could poke them with his sword, and all would be safe. It was a silly but comforting image. The following statement about her hunger made her mind shift gears quickly though.
“Ehhh? Well, it’s not lunchtime yet~!” she laughed. “This was a really yummy snack.” She nodded and smiled, showing her appreciation for the meal and the individuals who had brought it to her. As her eyes fell on Densetsu, though, she cocked her head and looked at him curiously. “Um, are you okay, Densetsu-san?”

Densetsu's change of mood was also noted by the Mizukami, and though he strained to keep his facial expression the same, there was a tinge of concern in his look; the younger boy's previous enthusiasm seemed to have been drained.
He toyed, though with not much amusement, how certain mythologies have their heroes end up in ghastly ends, or otherwise survive them, but leave scarred. He wondered if they had reminded him of something... maybe he had a bad incident with ants? He wasn't really good with figuring out how people felt...
If he had spoken now, his voice might become a little heavier... and it might trip up all over itself, in a metaphorical sense. And so he said nothing, for a while, since the perky girl had asked what he wanted to ask, essentially... but of course, merely asking didn't mean the asked would confess everything.
Perhaps he was thinking about it too much again.
He sometimes would feel he was a little insensitive, and when he did he sometimes would become paranoid. After all, their companion had only switched to a murmur, and it was not like he had voluntarily tried to upset him...
And so, even as he knew that his silence would include a factor of awkwardness into their otherwise joyous conversation, he kept his mouth shut. Because he was a little afraid... that he might say something worse than nothing.
He fidgeted, taking a sandwich from his pack, eyeing it, nibbling it, like a suddenly aware squirrel. He waited for his underclassman's reply to the foodloving girl.

Karu was growing more and more in resent to the small talk of that day. When he tried to identify the source of his conflicting emotions, the only thing it led back to in his mind was his sister. He thought he could cope with her injury, but somehow, on this very day, he had crumbled before months spent battling depression. He could not identify the trigger right away, but after some time he realized that it was because Yasuda-san reminded him of his sister. He didn't blame her, of course; it really wasn't her fault.
Meanwhile, there were questions, there was wonder: he had been too expressive with his distaste in the moment. His new-found friends were concerned for his well-being, it seemed. He decided, then and there, not to tell them anything; he did not want to ruin their fun, too. The best thing to do would be to leave the two in peace and go home, to let his unsettled frame-of-mind rest and think. Already they were growing suspicious.
Quite suddenly, he stood up, subconsciously clenching his fists. "I... I'm fine," he lied. "I just think I should be getting back home now. Thanks for the food Mizukami, and thanks both of you for the good company. I'll see you guys later." He paused, glancing at Yasuda-san. He didn't want to leave, but he had to. It was for the best. He hesitated, and then decided: it was now or never. Without looking back, Karu left the park, chased away by his inner emotions. OOC; this is where I step out.

Erina watched with increasing confusion as Densetsu remained silent and Mizukami began to fidget. Had she somehow missed something? Her eyes darted around the area, attempting to locate the source of the sudden mood change, but finding nothing, rested once more on her unhappy upperclassman.
Densetsu stood up suddenly, and the girl shifted back a bit at the unexpected movement. She nodded as he thanked her and Mizukami, but the questions in her expression were apparent. Had she done something wrong? Why was he leaving?
“It was nice meeting you, Densetsu-sempai!” she said, smiling as the boy caught her eye. “Let’s hang out again soon~! Um… And thank you for being so nice!” She waved eagerly at his retreating figure, though he did not turn around to see it.
“I like him,” she stated simply, standing up herself. “I hope he’s okay~” The girl began to jog in place for a moment, pausing to stretch her legs. She had almost forgotten her original purpose for coming to the park.
“I’m going to go too, Mizukami-sempai~” she decided. “Thank you soooo much for sharing with me! I’ll see you later~” Shooting her new friend one last grin, she waved and picked up her jog where she had left off, continuing down the path through the park.
Exercise, new friends, and free food? Not a bad day for Erina Yasuda. ~End

OC: Kim, I just thought I'd like to add Ayumu's thoughts after Karu's and Erina's actions. If you don't want this, PM me. Postscript:
"I hope he's okay, too."
The boy seemed to have chosen isolation as a retreat. Ayumu wasn't offended; while he did not know the other boy's reasons, as he had only met him a few minutes ago, he knew that some people needed to be alone at times. He felt a little helpless in his ignorance, but he guessed time will unfold things in its own way.
He turned back apologetically at his remaining companion, the focus of the encounter, Yasuda-san. She seemed sunny as ever, though of course she was also concerned about their new acquaintance. Many first impressions were made here today. He had wanted to apologize for... well, he was not sure what he wanted to apologize about, but perhaps it didn't matter. This was merely the beginning...
"Okay." he answered shortly, and waved his hand in farewell to his lowerclasswoman, though not as eagerly as Yasuda had done earlier.
"Later."
It was a promise.
