Books VS Everything Else

The school week had gone by without too much of a hassle. Lucky for Kotomi, there weren’t any more perverts or bad men coming into the library trying to touch her. The thought of that incident still left her a bit shaken up. That pervert appeared out of nowhere. If she hadn’t screamed, he might have taken her to some room and tried vile things with her. And she was so lucky she put away that starfish craving that strange girl named Fuko gave her. Now it was safe in her house on top of her nightstand. Every morning when she woke up and every night right before she went to bed she would see the handcrafted star. It made her wonder why the girl considered it a starfish when there were any ribs on it. And Kotomi wasn’t sure what a starfish had to do with a wedding. But it did remind her every day she made a promise to that tiny little girl; a promise she intended to keep. Kotomi just hoped there wouldn’t be any bullies there.
But today wasn’t the day to worry about that. Today Kotomi needed to go shopping. The girl needed to go out and get fresh vegetables for the week. And since she was out, it was wise to stop and get a book or two to read. There were only so many times she could scan over old books. It had been a few weeks since she used her pension on books. The only reason why Kotomi had been avoiding such a trip was because she spent quite a bit of yen on book last month. She couldn’t afford milk because of that crazy splurging. This time, she had to fight off temptation; or at least go buy food before peeking in a book store.
It was a little past noon when Kotomi was ready to head out into the scary world. Dressed in pretty average clothes, Kotomi walked down the streets staring up at the sky. It was a fairly lovely day today. There were a few clouds in the sky but the sun shining brightly. The weather somewhat brightened her mood, but not by much. Kotomi didn’t enjoy leaving her house. She always felt bad things happened outside of her home. While the library had proven to be a safe place, she wasn’t sure about the rest of the world. Being outside in the scary world is what led to her parents’ demise. When then were safe at home, nothing bad ever happened…
The Shopping District was always a scary place. There were so many people rushing about, looking at things to buy and chatting with friends. The whole scene made her feel uncomfortable. When strangers started to bump into the girl, Kotomi hit her limit. She quickly ducked into the first door she saw, escaping the busy crowd. Without tons of people around, Kotomi’s delicate nerves slowly settled down. The dark haired girl took a deep breath before looking around. She had stumbled into a restaurant seemed. Considering the time, it might be wise to actually take a break before she shopping started and eat something. Food was supposed to be more important than books, so food should be more important than shopping for books. The girl sat herself down in a corner booth. It was a very nice restaurant, and the fact it wasn’t too busy made it easier to relax. Kotomi couldn’t handle crowds. There was just something about being around tons of people that made her want to run back to the safety of her home. The girl might have been friendly and kind to others, but that didn’t mean others were the same way. Strangers were full of unknown people: people that might be perverts or bullies.
Instead of grabbing the menu, Kotomi went for her bag and pulled out a book. There was nothing more relaxing than reading a book in a quiet place. While the restaurant wasn’t silent, it was still quiet enough for her to read. She couldn’t get too into the book with the background chatter; it did help her relax some. After two minutes of read poems, the girl had completely forgotten she was at a restaurant. Hopefully she wouldn’t forget to go shopping or else this trip outside would be a complete waste.

Kichiro Haru
___________________________________________________________________________ The rest of the school week had gone by relatively boring for Haru. After such an exciting morning in the library that one day, everything else had gone by rather slow. So when the chance came for him to finally get a day off and relax, he was rather glad to have it. Even better, the allowance he got that week gave him just enough money to go out and do a little shopping. So right at that moment he was heading down to the shopping district to search for a language reference book.
Haru found it odd that he was still obsessing over that. There had just been something in Kotomi’s disappointment about his language skills that had made him feel a bit ashamed. Sure, he knew the only reason she thought she had it was because she had a mind that was kind of…out there, but that didn’t mean it hurt any less. That, and he would admit this, he felt a little insulted when she said that maybe she had overestimated his intelligence. Usually he wasn’t arrogant at all, but his brains were the one thing he felt he had going for him, so to have them doubted was a bit of a berserk button for him. Though the fact that she didn’t mean anything by it was enough to not get him upset at her about it, but he was still going to try and prove her wrong.
Strolling into one of the local bookstores, he immediately made his way over to section for Foreign Languages and started to search for one that he thought Kotomi hadn’t already studied. Other than English, he had no clue what kind of languages she had a knowledge of. If this was going to work, he had to choose something that wasn’t commonly studied but yet easy enough that he could work on learning it as well. This store had only a small selection, but it would do for now. His fingers swept over the spines of the books as he read the titles off to himself. They had German, Italian, Russian, English, Spanish, and a few other ones that he wasn’t quite sure where they were spoken. Eventually he grabbed the Russian one, and a quick glance at the price showed that the package would end up almost wiping out his spending-money savings. Afterwards he could grab a small lunch, but that was about it.
Still, the package looked decent. It came with some CDs that he supposed were voice-based lessons, a Japanse-to-Russian dictionary (how that worked he had no clue), and a reference guide to various aspects of the language. Very convenient, and it all looked like it was built for beginners in the language. Hopefully he’d be able to figure it out and keep at least a close pace on Kotomi. As he walked over to the counter, he started to wonder what she would think of him after getting this for her. While his hope was that she would get excited about it and possibly let him get a bit, um, closer to her, in the back of his head he really doubted she’d think of it as some kind of romantic gesture. Still, a nice gift would be a good way to get a chance to talk to her about something other than a book or school work. Maybe she would be nice enough to let him come over and study with her?
As his hopes of getting the chance to study with Kotomi filled his head, he walked out of the bookstore with his purchase. Quickly glancing at the sun, and the empty feeling in his stomach, he realized that it was probably about lunch time, and that now would be a good time to get something to eat. With his savings just about spent, he wouldn’t be able to get much, but at least he could get something halfway decent. So that meant no fancy restaurants for him, but he was sure he could find a decent café or something in the area. It took a few minutes, but eventually he found a place that looked like he could afford it. Ducking inside, he found that the place didn’t look too crowded, and he was about to grab a seat when he froze.
Over in one of the corner booths was Kotomi, reading a book about who knows what. His eyes glanced down to his bag, and he quickly hid it behind his back. He doubted the dark-haired girl would notice it since she was lost in her own little world, but it made him feel a bit better. Sweating a little, he tried to figure out what he should do. Should he be direct about it and just walk over to her, or should he hold it off and give it to her at school? He just stood there, his fingers fumbling around with the bag as he tried to figure out what it was exactly he should do.
Just standing there, Haru felt as if he was going to draw attention, so he slowly slinked his way over to where Kotomi was. He was a nervous wreck alright, but if he didn’t at least try to talk to her he’d end up looking like a stalker. Sitting down, he would have just looked at her the entire time, looking between his bag and her. If he didn’t want to get that added to his reputation, sitting with her would probably be the safest thing to do.
”He..hey there Kotomi-chan. I didn’t expect to see you out in public. Not that I think you’re a recluse or anything like that!”
The last part was added because he felt the first part sounded offensive. Holding up the bag, he hoped she would notice it and his existence as he nervously kept talking.
”It was good timing though. I just bought some, uh, reference material on Russian that I thought you might like. I did promise that after all…”
He stood there nervously as he waited for a reaction.

Saito Morinozuka ___________________________________________________________________________
Why was his schedule so full, even on the weekend? This question passed through his mind once again, as he closed one of his textbooks. Shortly after having risen from much needed sleep, he had already begun studying and finishing all the homework that he had been assigned in class to finish during the weekend. While standing up from his revolving office chair to place the book back in one of the provide shelves, his eyes moved to his alarm clock, which was also present on top of the shelf. "Almost time to get ready for work." Looking down at himself would reveal that he was still in his pajamas, which consisted of white boxers and a white shirt. Letting out a sigh, he began the long process where he would get himself ready for the day. This process included showering, changing into casual outdoor clothes, along with placing his work clothes neatly into a small backpack.
Forty five minutes finishing getting ready, would lead him outside his house and beginning on the path that lead to walk. Normally, he would have much preferred to drive, however hadn't received his silence yet. Saito observed the scenery around him, it was quite calm in the morning, but he decided to hurry his pace anyway. Luckily for him, the cafe he worked in was relatively close to his home, which meant that he would rarely be late as long as he hurried himself. Upon entering, Saito maneuvered through all of the morning rush where everyone wanted their coffee, and headed into the staff washroom after stamping his time card in. His shifts were mostly on the weekends, not wanting to have them conflict with school, but he didn't mind giving up his spare time either. It would have been a waste to spend it idly, however he hadn't had enough fun experiences himself to make a proper comparison.
After changing, making sure that there wasn't anything wrong with his outfit, and headed out the washroom door. Saito instinctively grabbed the round silver tray which he would probably be holding for the next few hours, and headed over near the small window peeking into the kitchen where the waiters would take the desired items from the customers to them. For a cafe, they were quite popular, which is reason why they also served food to meet the demands of the customers. He longed to be able to cook in the kitchen as well, despite it being rare when it was needed. If he could do that, it would surely be a stepping stone in his career. However, ridding himself of the idle thinking, Saito quickly finished taking the items and began moving towards the customers.
This process would continue for the next few hours, until he finally decided to take his thirty minute break. Just as he was undoing the apron, he spotted a blue-haired girl sitting at a booth with a book, with no present food or drinks on her table. "Did I miss her? He couldn't recognize who it was from so far away, which meant he would have to get closer. Prolonging the time in which he'd take his break, he began to head over to the table with his silver tray. The menu lay flat on the table with the girl, which probably meant she must have had ordered something already.
While still walking, having quite a bit difficulty now that business was picking up. With his height, he felt a slight increased difficulty when trying to avoid accidentally stepping on peoples feet, but it would allow him to carry his tray high when lifting foods. Now that the distance had been closed slightly, only a few feet separating himself and the girl, he could see her face more clearly.
It was clear that she was quite focused on the book. Had she gotten too into it and forgotten to order? That was a small possibility, but he himself had never met such a customer. Wait. It was that girl, from his school. He had seen her occasionally when it came to his time in the library. She seemed to be always reading, along with the rumors hes heard of her being one of the smartest in the school, if not the smartest. He, himself had wanted to discuss a few things with her, just problems that arisen time to time in his textbooks which conflicted what he was knowledgeable of. However, due to his work he wouldn't be able to associate with her idly here, perhaps another time. It was then a boy moved past him and sat in the seat? Upon sitting he had already began conversation with the girl. Taking note that he would probably order something two, he finally placed himself at the side of the table the two were currently present and held up his notebook. The customary smile arriving shortly after.
"Hello, how may I help you?"

”He...hey there Kotomi-chan.”
Kotomi moaned as she heard someone call her name. It wasn’t something she was expecting considering how unusual it was for someone to talk to her while she was out shopping. Her violet eyes moved from her book as she looked up at the blue eyed male looking down at her. It was Kichiro Haru; he wasn’t really someone she expected to see. In fact, she hadn’t seen the brown haired boy since the incident on the first day of school. The girl still hadn’t realized she was quite rude to him. Kotomi did know he wasn’t an idiot, but she still a bit sadden over the fact he wasn’t some amazing linguist even though he made friends with the nice foreign boy who wasn’t a bully. ”Kichiro kun…good afternoon,” she greeted him with a warm smile. Kotomi closed the book and placed it tenderly in her lap. It was odd since he somewhat appeared out of thin air, stand next to her small booth. It wasn’t a bad surprise since Kichiro was a nice person. During the several encounters she had with the boy, not once did he try to bully her or anything like that. And he wasn’t a pervert like a rumor she heard long ago suggested. The boy had never tried to touch her inappropriately or anything like that.
”I didn’t expect to see you out in public, not that I think you’re a recluse or anything like that!”
Kotomi was one hundred percent certain she wasn’t a neet. It was true that she preferred to stay indoors because the outside world was a scary place. There were tons of bad things lurking about in the world. Bad things came in so many different varieties too; there were bullies, transportation accidents, falling objects, thieves, perverts, murders, and the list went on. Being inside her house was really the safest place. Besides the fire she caused when she was little, nothing bad ever happened in her house. Over time, the library had become a safe haven, but that took a year for her to actually feel safe in. The several shelves of books were a big help, or else it probably would have taken longer. But Kotomi left her safe haven occasionally because she needed things. It was possible to order everything online, but it was nice to go outside and buy things herself since she could stop and pick up a book that way. Kichiro was never around during these times since they were friends, but associates at school. It was no surprise he assumed she was also behind closed doors. The dark haired girl could assume he lived at school if she used the same logic; Kotomi was just smarter than that.
”Oh…well, I do have to shop for food and things,” she explained with a frown.
”It was good timing though,” he continued with somewhat an uneasy tone, ”I just brought some, uh, reference material on Russian that I thought you might like. I did promise that after all…”
During their chat in the library where she underestimated him, Kichiro promised to help her study other languages. He said he would find some books on tape or something of that nature. Her frown turned into a hopeful expression before she looked over towards the brown haired boy. So he was going to read a bit and help her try out Russian? That was some very exciting news. Not only could she look forward to mimicking a speaker and reading a new book, but she had someone to practice the new language with. “ That’s great to heard, Kichiro kun. I can’t wait for us to study together,” she said cheerily. There was an odd silence for a second as Kotomi thought for a moment. It would be rude to take the book before he had a chance to read, but she felt eager to dive into the new subject. So the faster he read through the book, the sooner he would let her borrow it. The girl pointed to the other side of the booth before looking back at the boy. “Sit down Kichiro kun. It’s easier to read that way. We can sit here and study together,” she insisted with an innocent smile. While he probably had no intentions of starting his Russian lesson, Kotomi automatically assumed he was just as eager as she was to finish his new book. Not too long after Kichiro sat down arrived a waiter. Since her head wasn’t buried deep in a book, the girl immediately noticed him. With her hands in her lap unconsciously safeguarding her book, the girl’s eyes began to study the boy. The fact he walked towards them with a friendly smile was a good sign that he wasn’t a bully. In her experience, bullies didn’t smile. While there were people like Kichiro’s English speaking friend who had a very mean look to them, not every scowling person was a bully. They were just more likely a candidate. ”Hello, how may I help you?””Good afternoon,” she greeted the new boy, nodding. It finally hit the girl she hadn’t gone over the menu before her waiter arrived. It was a bit of an embarrassing but the girl was already prepared to order. As long as Kotomi had a cookbook, the girl was a genius in the kitchen. But there was one book she had never found. There just weren’t enough sources, or she was just looking in the wrong stores. Either way, it was one of the things she always found herself ordering when out at a restaurant. ”Do you by chance have okonomiyaki?” she asked shyly. Her voice was somewhat whispered since she didn’t want others to hear her and start giving her odd looks in case they didn’t have the pancake dish. Having several people stare at her with disapproving looks was a scary thought. In scenarios like those, Kotomi found herself acting shy. While the little genius usual had no issue talking to others, she wasn’t too fond when there was a crowd of people staring at her. If they had disapproving looks, the girl wanted to get away as quickly as possible. The girl waved for the tall male to bend down towards her. When he was close enough, she cuffed her hands around her lips and whispered softly into his ear. ”If you do, I’d like some with octopus please. If not, can you please pick something tasty?”The girl gave him a bit of a pleading look before her hands went back to protect her beloved book. A waiter knew the restaurant they worked at better than any customer. He would surely know the best dishes to order at the place if they didn’t have the vegetable filled pancake. So it was best to trust him and his judgment over her own naïve assumptions about any menu item. Kichiro Haru
___________________________________________________________________________ Everything seemed to be going good so far. Kotomi was acting just like she normally would at the library. She didn’t look scared or frightened of him just appearing out of nowhere, and even wished him a good afternoon. This calmed him down quite a bit, though he was still a bit nervous since for once he wasn’t talking to her about anything school related. If things went well, he hoped he could squeak out an invite for the two of them to hang out at the Founder Festival that was supposed to be happening soon. Though the almost nauseating feeling he was getting in stomach told him he would have to make this little confession of love rather quick if he wanted to be able to get it out without fainting.
Almost immediately after he made the ‘recluse’ comment, Kichiro knew he had said something stupid. He mentally kicked himself in the head, and hoped Kotomi didn’t take it the wrong way or anything. Then again, how could you take it the wrong way? In his mind at least, he had obviously just said that he had expected her to be stuck in her house all the time and never leave. What kind of person would enjoy being called such a thing? When he saw a frown on her face as she replied, he almost broke down right there and ran off. However, he still had the reference material to fall back on as support, so he sucked it up as he quickly tried to explain himself.
”I, I know that Kotomi-chan. I was, uhm, exaggerating a bit. I didn’t mean to say that I thought you locked yourself up in your house all the time. It’s just that I’m not that used to seeing you outside of the library or anything so it was a bit of a surprise. It was just a stupid comment on my part, really, just forget about it okay?” he gushed out rapidly, ending with a bit of a weak laugh. He was really screwing this up, wasn’t he?
The mentioning of language material, however, brought back a more positive look on her face. She looked pretty hopeful, and Kichiro matched the feeling. Maybe he could salvage this attempt after all. And then the bombshell came; she wanted him to study with her. Kichiro froze up rather quickly at the moment, just holding the bag of material while his mind just stopped working. What was he to say about the offer? It was sort of the reason he had come, to try and get closer to Kotomi a little. But he didn’t mean for it to end up like that, though admittedly he was the only one between the two of them that actually considered it that way. She probably just thought he wanted to study with her and it was perfectly innocent all that. He was, however, feeling like he was going to have a heart attack just thinking about it. Sure, he studied all the time in the library with her around, but that was completely different from studying with her.
However, he knew he couldn’t just stand there dumbstruck forever. He had to make some kind of movement, and with his mind in auto-pilot at the moment he just followed her suggestion and sat down next to her. He set the bag right in between them, creating both a physical and mental wall between them. It was irrational to think a silly plastic bag of Russian books would actually do anything, but it provided some sort of comfort. However, by the time the waiter came and asked them what they wanted, Kichiro’s face had a rather noticeable blush coming forth from it.
Kotomi was the first to order as Kichiro’s mind was still processing his thoughts. He just sat there quietly, face looking down at the menu as Kotomi made her order. Occasionally he would glance over at her before moving his eyes back to the menu as fast as possible. Listening to Kotomi make her order, and making the guy bend down to hear her, Kichiro gave a bit of a smile. There was just something about Kotomi’s almost innocence and shyness he found endearing. Probably helped that at times he was like that, especially around other girls.
Eventually he knew he was going to have to order, and so when Kotomi looked satisfied with her order he looked up at the waiter and started to order for himself. Sadly, his recent purchase left him with little money, and he hadn’t had time to get a good look at the menu so he just had to be at the mercy of the chef.
”Uhm, I’ll just have whatever the cheapest thing on the menu is. I’m a bit low on funds at the moment,” he ordered, his voice sounding rather quiet as he was just starting to calm down after his moment of freezing.
Now that he had his food ordered, he wanted to try and talk to Kotomi about the festival. However, he felt even more nervous with this waiter standing there. He’d wait for him to leave and serve someone else before bringing it up. He just hoped Kotomi wasn’t going to head straight into the Russian before he got a chance to do so because otherwise he would probably never be able to get her out of it. When she wanted to learn something, there was no stopping her from doing so. ___________________________________________________________________________

Okonomiyaki? At least, I think that's what she said. Well, that seemed a normal enough item to order. Secretly, he had actually been feeling a bit nervous while waiting for he to speak, wondering if some sort of complex taste in food came with genius. If that was the case, he would have found quite it hard to do, telling her that the restaurant/cafe would have a difficult time catering to her needs. Saito quickly jotted down "Okonomiyaki" on his notepad, along with the price beside it. It would only take a few seconds to complete, his glance returning to the two upon finishing. It was then that he saw a wave directed towards him from the girl, probably beckoning for him to lower himself next to hear.
Now at this point, one might have thought several scenarios could have happened. Maybe she had some sort of personal compliment towards himself or the restaurant. There was also the possibility something was wrong with his outfit. All sorts of thoughts similar to what could happen seemed to fly in and out of his head while lowering himself. He had to squat, but it brought him to eye level with the girl. However his head was turned to the side, as she whispered into his ear. Saito at this point was blushing slightly, the last possible situation he thought of in particular being the cause.
”If you do, I’d like some with octopus please. If not, can you please pick something tasty?”
When she finished her sentence, he paused there for a second or two, before rising again. He let out a bit of a sigh, releasing himself from everything that had happened earlier in his mind. Even questioning himself mentally for doing so, wondering what he must have been thinking. Raising his notepad near his face again, he wrote "w/ Octopus." underneath what she had ordered. Nodding his head with another warm smile to indicate that he had completely finished writing down her order, assuming she didn't have anything else she wanted to buy. Now that he was finished, he could direct his attention towards the boy who had just sat down beside her.
Upon closer observance of his face, Saito recognized him to be one of the boys he had seen in his school from time to time, however had never met him personally. He didn't want to ask him what he wanted to order right off the bat, as he probably hadn't had any time to look at the menu. Instead, Saito simply stood there with his notepad and pen raised, awaiting for him to finish.
”Uhm, I’ll just have whatever the cheapest thing on the menu is. I’m a bit low on funds at the moment,”
Saito nodded his head, with a warm smile. Of course, with the last comment his customer had made, he couldn't let such a thing happen. With that, he jotted down an exact replicate of the girls order directly underneath her, turning the prices into an equation. He factored in a small tip he had received earlier to subtract from the total. With his contribution, his meal price was equivalent to the cheapest item on the menu. While walking away to another table to serve another pair who seemed like they required help, or needed to order, he began to think of the excuses he would come up with to explain later.
At the second table, while listening to the order. He took one last glance back at the girl. Despite the stuff he had heard about her, she didn't turn out the way he had expected. Really, she must have been a lot more interesting then he initially expected, perhaps they could get to know each other better sometime..

Kotomi felt the waiter was a trustworthy male since he didn’t laugh at her when she asked for octopus. She felt a bit embarrassed about not reading the menu, but he didn’t make fun at her at all. This boy was definitely not a bully. She would have to remember to come to this place again in hopes of getting him as a waiter, especially if the food was good. There were so few places she trusted that the girl created routines to visit safe havens. The school library and her house were both safe havens. This restaurant was now one. The book store two blocks from here was as well. The supermarket wasn’t one, however. That place was scary and full of so many different people that she hated going. But the girl needed food; it was very important to get vitamins and minerals every day so she could do her best in her studies.
“Uhm, I’ll just have whatever the cheapest thing on the menu is. I’m a bit low on funds at the moment,” Haru ordered.
Kotomi turned away from the waiter at Haru a bit confused. He was low on funds? If he didn’t have much money, why would he come to a restaurant and eat. He should have returned home and ate there. It was the more cost effective thing to do. The dark haired girl was given a nice pension every month which she could eat out on weekends, buy food for the week, and still get a book or two. However, the girl sometimes got consumed by the books at the different bookstores in the area and ended up spending more yen than she originally budgeted. At times like that, she would have to rearrange her budget to ensure she got enough vegetables and avoided every bookstore in town. The several shops around town were usually owned by elderly couples. They made coming into a book store more inviting since they weren’t threatening looking in the least. Their old wrinkled smile had such kindness and sincerity behind it. They made it so easy to spend so much money in their shops; there was no pressure or glaring looks. Kotomi wished the world was as safe and peaceful as those old shops. Haru might have done the same thing; he did have a new book with him.
”Did you want to share something with me, Kichiro kun?” she asked politely. She had never minded sharing her food with hungry students. She sometimes packed extra in her bento box so she could share with random hungry students. Food was just as important to life as books, and she didn’t want people to go without either. So just like he was willing to share his new book, it was only polite for her to share her food with him if he couldn’t afford it. ”But you should learn to budget,” she lightly scolded him with a very sagely look. The girl nodded to herself. If he didn’t learn to budget his funds better, then he might starve. It was impossible to read a good book if a person was starving. The brain had trouble processing information if it didn’t get the right nutrition!
Her eyes catch the waiter looking back at her and Kotomi offered him a friendly smile. He was a nice person. Her eyes moved back to Haru then to his bag. Well since they were going to have to wait for their food, it was best to study. She didn’t think there needed to be an announcement that it was study time. Instead, she picked up the book in her lap and once again started to read through the pages. The book was actually one of her favorite books even if it was a bit outdated. It dealt with a subject called String Theory. Of course since it was outdated, the term had changed from String to M. But the book was a scientific theory was connected to the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics with Eistien’s law of general relativity. It was a book first published several years after the death of her parents’ death that stated the beginning of the theory. Of course now there was still research being conducted on this ‘theory of everything.’ When this book was written, there wasn’t a mathematical equation that could solidly connect both fundamental theories. In fact, there was still tons of disputes on if M Theory was really something to be looked at since it dealt with so many different dimensions and things like that.
But her parents had supposed found a breakthrough on String theory before it was ever announced. Their involvement was so deep that they had named her Kotomi or beautiful harp/string. And had she not been so childish all those years ago and burned those documents, more would be known on this subject. Her parents were so deeply involved in the research of string theory before it became even something talked about in the scientific community; it was possible they even found the one equation that explained the whole universe: the mathematical theory of String Theory. But there was no telling since her parents were no longer in this world, and she had burnt the only documents that could have helped lead science to a bright new age. The girl flipped the page of the book, not hinting any of the guilt she felt when reading this book. If she had to relive those moments, the same things would happen. No matter how important String or M Theory was, it wasn’t worth the life of her parents.

Kichiro Haru
___________________________________________________________________________ With his order complete, Kichiro thanked the kid and watched as he walked off to go help someone else. Before turning his attention back to Kotomi, he thought he saw the boy glancing at them, or at least Kotomi. For a brief second he felt a tinge of jealousy at the thought of someone looking at her, but then blew it off. He was probably just looking at her in a bit of disbelief. Kotomi didn’t act like most other girls, so it should have been natural for him to take another look at her. She was an interesting person to watch….a thought that Kichiro thought sounded much better in his head than in words.
Pushing the glance to the back of his mind, he returned the situation at hand; the impromptu lunch and study session with Kotomi. His comment about his funds apparently caught Kotomi’s ear, as she offered to share her lunch with him. Before a response came from him, she added in that he should learn to budget. He returned the comment with a look that said “You have to be joking” before turning back to one of more tiredness. Kotomi was a nice girl and all, but sometimes it was a pain having to explain some of his behavior to her. She always had a strange thing for assuming either the best (like his language skills) or the worse (like his budgeting skills); there never seemed to be much of a middle ground.
”No, no, it’s fine Kotomi-chan. Go ahead and enjoy your lunch, I’ll be fine. If I’m still hungry I can eat at home. Would have had a bit more cash on me today, but there was an unexpected expenditure that wiped me out.” he said, his eyes glancing real quick to the package of language books. He returned his gaze to the girl, however, before she noticed. The last thing he needed was for her to feel all guilty about the gift.
Surprisingly enough, however, Kotomi didn’t dig right into the language books. Instead, she pulled out what seemed to be an older book. Must have been one of her favorites if she wanted to read that instead of the newer stuff Kichiro though. He titled his head a little to get a look at the book’s pages, and caught a glimpse of the word “String Theory.” Sitting back normally, he debated whether or not to get involved in it. He knew the basics of the theory of course, but he had never really been a physics person so he didn’t get really in depth in it. He felt more comfortable in some of the other subjects like History or Literature or even Math. But once he got into the deeper sciences like Chemistry of Physics, and even he had to work hard to succeed in it. In the end he still came out near the top, but it was a lot more challenging than other subjects.
Still, there was the chance that Kotomi expected him to read alongside her, and he didn’t want her to question his intelligence again. At the same time, however, his body refused to scoot close enough to her to be able to read the book with her. Knowing his luck, as he scooted his hand would brush up against something it shouldn’t, and Kotomi would freak about it. That didn’t even cover the fact that the book was on her lap, and if he tried to read the book there, it wouldn’t look so innocent from an outsiders point of view. If past events were of any help, he knew that pleas of “It was an accident” didn’t seem to be very effective at getting rid of that ‘pervert’ stigma that went away only with time.
”Hey, uhm, Kotomi-chan, why don’t you place the book on the table so I can read along. It’s kind of hard to read it when it’s on your lap like that.” He asked, sounding a bit nervous in doing so. His eyes were busy darting around to see if anyone noticed his earlier glancing at the book. ___________________________________________________________________________

Selfishness ___________________________________________ ”No, no, it’s fine Kotomi-chan. Go ahead and enjoy your lunch.”
She didn’t understand him at all. Sharing wasn’t really a problem for her. The girl didn’t think she could finish her meal either way. Okonomiyaki was a bit big for one person. It was just really good so she wanted to have the vegetable pancake like dish. And if there were leftovers, the girl could easily pack them up and take them home with her. It wasn’t like she had a problem eating food that had been sitting awhile. Through it was important to eat. The lack of calories could easily lead someone to feel weak or fatigue. In worse case scenarios, such fatigue could lead to the loss of consciousness. She didn’t want Haru to pass out on his walk home. That would be a catastrophe!
”But Kichiro kun,” the moaned lowly.
” I’ll be fine. If I’m still hungry I can eat at home. Would have had a bit more cash on me today, but there was an unexpected expenditure that wiped me out.”
”Okay,” she gave in looked a bit shy as she looked down. It wasn’t right to try to force her will on someone else, no matter how many good intentions she had. If he didn’t want to eat her food, she shouldn’t try to for him. For all she knew he might not like okonomiyaki; even worse he could be allergic to octopus! How embarrassed would she be if she nearly killed Haru buy something simply like forcing him to eat octopus?! Her frowned deepened for a moment as she looked at the red cushioned seat. She was acting like a bully with such selfish thoughts. Haru must have hated her for trying to force her food onto him. He was just as much as an adult as she was. If he wanted to eat something, he could get himself something; if he didn’t want to eat anything, then who was she to tell him otherwise. Haru was smart enough to make sure he never put himself in danger.
She felt disappointed in herself and couldn’t read straight. Even though her eyes had seen every word on the page, she couldn’t recall a word she read. It was frustrating, but it was punishment for being selfish. God didn’t like selfish girls like her. She lost her parents by being selfish once. If she continued to be such a horrible person, God would take someone else away from her. She did promise she would be a good girl and study really hard, but God didn’t hold up His end of her deal. Her parents never came back. They were never found among the survivors or anything like that.
”Hey, uhm, Kotomi-chan.”
Her head rose from the boy and stared at the boy absently. Did he have enough of being around someone like her? Was Haru so upset that he was looking to leave or something like that? There was still a frown painted on her lips as she readied herself for rejection and pain. It was inevitable. People didn’t like to be around her, but Kotomi was fine with that. The boy she made friends with as a child stopped coming around her house when her selfishness peeked and God took away her parents. Haru wasn’t to close with her, but they were still loosely associated with one another. But it seemed after today he might stop visiting her safe haven as well.
”Why don’t you place the book on the table so I can read along. It’s kind of hard to read it when it’s on your lap like that.”
”Oh…?”
He wasn’t leaving? He just wanted to study with her. The girl sighed with relief before smiling at him weakly. ”Okay…” she moaned shyly, moving right next to him before placing the book between them. If she sat close to him and had the book on the table so he could see, then studying would have been easier. Then again, she had expected him to study the book he just brought instead of wanting to read the one she brought with her. It didn’t really matter if she read it again or not. The girl had read it over and over again. She knew more about String Theory than this book could point towards. ”If you have any questions…tell me,” she offered in a hushed tone. She didn’t want to come off as insulting to him or his intelligence. Haru wasn’t an idiot. But String Theory was a bit complicated so it might be hard to understand in the beginning. She didn’t want the quantum mechanics of the subject to blow him away or make him disinterested.

Kichiro Haru
___________________________________________________________________________ It was rather nice of Kotomi to argue with him over sharing her food, but Kichiro really didn’t want to take her food from her. He wasn’t really sure why it was such a big deal for her to share her food. He was responsible for his own lunch, and she had paid for it herself. And to put simple, Kichiro wasn’t going to take that from her. Now if there were any leftovers and she offered, then maybe he would take it. But to split it right off the back like that wasn’t his plan.
The rejection of sharing the food seemed to have brought Kotomi down as she looked away from him. It was enough to make Kichiro feel a bit disappointed in himself. He hadn’t meant to get her upset at all. Maybe point out he wasn’t a bad budgeter like she had thought, but not make her embarrassed. Though actually, Kichiro wasn’t too sure what there was to be embarrassed about. Then again, it didn’t really matter, did it? Kotomi always seemed to be on her own little wavelength, and half the time he had trouble understanding her behavior. Some people thought her a bit crazy, and there was that saying that “madness and genius are two sides of the same coin.” So maybe somewhere deep in her own thought processes there was something inherently wrong with him rejecting an offer of food that made her feel ashamed.
If that was the case, she seemed to be having a good time hiding it. Within seconds she was back to reading her book again, and didn’t look up until he had asked her about putting the book up on the table. Kichiro, however, noticed that she looked a bit off; she had a bit of a frown on her face. The only reason he noticed it was because they were so close; otherwise he’d have missed it. Did he really upset her that much because he didn’t want to share her food? It was making him guilty enough he made a note that next time she offered food to take it just to avoid that look.
She complied rather calmly to his request, and was glad he didn’t have to strain his neck to try and read alongside her. When she moved closer to him, however, just about anybody in that restaurant would have noticed a blush coming onto his face. He hadn’t really expected that from her, and most likely his hands wouldn’t be leaving his sides for the rest of that visit. All it would take to ruin the moment would be for his hand to slip and touch her, and he really didn’t know how she’d react to that, and he wasn’t really to find out either.
With that in mind, he also had his eyes glued to the book in front of him…and found himself on the loosing end of a battle. Just as he thought, he could understand parts of what was being talked about, but other parts simply went right over his head. He had a feeling that Kotomi would expect him to keep up, however, so he had no choice but to slug through it all and hope that for once she didn’t overestimate his abilities. Sure, she had offered to explain any questions he might have had, which might have been a sign she knew he might not get it all, but if he actually took advantage of that, Kotomi would probably have enough material to right the Dummies Guide to String Theory.
If he couldn’t talk about the actual material of String Theory, maybe he could talk to her about something else? Maybe he could ask why she was so interested in it since it wasn’t a normal topic of study for a high school student. Hopefully getting her talking a bit would loosen the atmosphere up a bit, because right now he was as still as statue and had his eyes glued to the pages.
”Kotomi-chan, I did want to ask you one thing. I hope this isn’t prying too much, but is there a reason you’re interested in String Theory? It isn’t a common subject for a high school student” Kichiro paused for a moment before realizing that statement could be taken as insulting by implying she wasn’t normal.
”Not that there’s anything wrong with you wanting to study it of course. You can study whatever you want and….and I think I’m going to be quiet now.” he rambled a little before being silencing himself. He really hoped Kotomi didn’t think him an idiot after that little babbling. [/blockquote] ___________________________________________________________________________

The Promise ___________________________________________ “Kotomi-chan, I did want to ask you one thing. I hope this isn’t prying too much, but is there a reason you’re interested in String Theory? It isn’t a common subject for a high school student.”
String theory wasn’t normal? Kotomi was having a hard time taking the boy’s words as truth for several reasons. The first and foremost reason to think he was making something up was because there were String Theory books in the library. If students weren’t supposed to learn such concepts, why were they taught about the laws of the universe in classes like Biology and Physics. The girl was willing to admit this book was slightly geared towards those who had a basic understanding of the subject. If he had never read anything about it, then she could see why there would be an issue. String Theory wasn’t something most people could understand at any level. The concept was simple but the deeper explanation required some explanation or a deep understanding of the laws of Physics.
”Oh…” she moaned looking away shyly. She didn’t feel comfortable suddenly reveal how horrible of a person to Haru. If she told him everything, then he would surely hate her and leave. The boy would never come back to the library again and he would always avoid her since no one liked to be around mean and selfish people. But she couldn’t lie to him either; liars were just as bad. She wished she could ignore the question like she never heard anything; life would be easier if they never talked about something like this. ”Does it make me strange?” she asked, pointing at herself. Was this another thing people learned but didn’t care to learn more about? Math seemed to be one of those subjects people learned but didn’t care to spend their free time learning more about. But math was wonderful since it was a definite in the world of indefinites. Things changed all the time. People grew older and changed: there was a boy she use to play with when she was small around the school. He was a nice boy but she had heard people talking about him; he was a delinquent now. Scientific theories changed with more time. Religious views changed to fit their evolving societies. But numbers didn’t change. One plus one would always be two. A squared plus B squared would always equal C squared with the Pythagorean Theorem.
“Not that there’s anything wrong with you wanting to study it of course. You can study whatever you want and….and I think I’m going to be quiet now.”
”Well…um…my parents helped found the theory. So it’s very important to me…”
She promised she’d become smart. She was determined to become smart enough to finish the precious research her parents starts. She was the reason why it didn’t exist in this world anymore. Her selfish actions destroyed their hard work. Her eyes still shied away from him. He was going to see her selfishness if she looked at him. He was going to see regardless of how important the theory was and how it linked her to her parents that she was a bad person. He was going to see the real her and leave. Her hands balled up into a fist and fidgeted in her lap. Regardless of how hard she tried to be nice and smart, she was still that selfish girl that hated her parents for leaving her for her birthday. It was why she didn’t have any real friends and things like that. Kotomi wasn’t really someone people could like no matter her efforts.
The girl’s dark thoughts were suddenly distracted as the food arrived. Her eyes lit up as a large plate with her food was set in front of her. The vegetable covered pizza was drizzled with sauce in a zigzag pattern. The dark haired girl immediately broke out a pair of chopsticks and started eating. It was even better than she had hoped for! The batter was crunchy yet melted in her mouth and the octopus wasn’t overcooked so it wasn’t hard and rubbery. The vegetables weren’t too cooked so they were still slightly crispy but not completely raw. ”Kichiro kun,” she cried happily, ”try some!” The girl had a piece of the okonomiyaki in between her chop sticks as she held it in front of the young boy’s mouth. The innocent violet eyed girl had nothing but the purest intentions when it came to feeding him. She genuinely wanted him to try to food since she found it so delicious. It would be selfish of her to keep such a delicious treat to hearself! Regardless of his protests, she didn’t think he’d have a problem eating a small piece of her okonomiyaki. And if he liked it, he might take her offer for some food.

Kichiro Haru
___________________________________________________________________________ Oh boy, he did it again didn’t he? Apparently Kotomi thought that String Theory was a normal topic for the average high school student, and here he was spoiling it for her. She was looking away shly from him, and he followed suit by looking away as well. He looked back when she asked if it made her strange, which he didn’t think it did. Sure, it was different, but different wasn’t always strange. In this case it just meant that she had a liking towards a subject that other people didn’t; nothing wrong with that at all. Besides, and he felt he was being rather rude in thinking this, there were probably other reasons someone would think that she was weird like how she was always so quiet and almost lived in the library. Still, he wasn’t going to bring that up, especially since by this point he was so used to it he didn’t think it that weird anymore.
”No, of course it doesn’t make you strange at all Kotomi-chan.” he replied, his tone a bit on the rushed side with a bit of a surprised tone as well thrown into the mix.
When she brought up that her parents had a hand in creating the theory, Kichiro quieted down some. He hadn’t known that at all. If that was the case, then it was no surprise really that she was interested in the theory. It was only natural that growing up around parents who loved physics and such would cause her to develop a liking for it was well. She probably wanted to be just like her parents and follow in their footsteps into the field of physics, right? That thought, however, lead Kichiro to realize something else; he didn’t actually know that much about Kotomi’s parents. He had never really asked her about her life outside of school or the library, except for maybe some occasional small talk. But she never really mentioned her parent’s that much either. It was a rather odd situation really. If his parent’s had been big shots that had a hand in creating one of the newest and biggest theories in a field he’d probably talk about it quite often.
”Speaking of your parents…”
Kichiro stopped mid-sentence when he noticed that her hands were balled up in a fist and she was fidgeting. Something was bothering her, and since the last thing they had talked about was her parents, there was a good case it had to do with them. Maybe her and her parents where having some difficulty at home? Whatever the issue, it wasn’t his job to pry, and after seeing how upset she seemed over something as simple as food, he didn’t want to see how upset she could get over something that actually mattered. For once he hoped she had ignored what he had just said like she usually did and decided to just drop the subject.
Luckily it was good timing as the food had just arrived, and Kotomi seemed rather distracted. She was at least in a better mood as her eyes seemed to light up at the food. It looked fine to him, but he was rather surprised to find that he was given the same exact meal. Apparently the waiter had given him the same exact order as Kotomi. At long as it was cheap, however, Kichiro really didn’t mind. At least it would give the two of them something to talk about other than String Theory and physics. Though he really couldn’t see how much of a conversation they could get about it.
Before he even got a chance to dig in, however, Kotomi was already going at her food. She seemed to have rather liked it, but he was a bit surprised when she actually offered some to him…and was willing to feed it to him. Considering he had already rejected it once, he could have done it again. However, she seemed to be rather happy about it, and it was such a big change in her behavior compared to just a few minutes ago when she didn’t even want to look at him. And since he now knew that rejecting food was a great disappointment to her, he had no choice but to indulge in Kotomi’s request (even if he had the same exact meal…).
”Okay then Kotomi-chan…”
He ate the piece of okonomiyaki that she had on the chopstick, and had a rather similar reaction to hers. It was really good food. The batter wasn’t too hard, the octopus wasn’t overcooked and hard to chew (he hated meat like that), the vegetables were crispy (he did like that), and overall it was a rather well done meal. Now that he had actually tried it, he was rather glad he got stuck with the same meal as she did. Of course, she was probably looking for a reaction, so once he swallowed he got right on that.
”That is really good. Might have to remember to visit this restaurant a bit more often…and I guess I should be glad they took my rather vague “cheapest on the menu” order to give me a plate of it as well.”
Not really sure what to do after that, he decided to focus on his own meal. There wasn’t much room between Kotomi and him though, so he had to scoot a little ways away from her so he didn’t accidentally bump into her or anything like that as he ate. “Speaking of your parents…”
She knew this day would come. Eventually someone would try to get to know her well and ask casual questions like this. Parents were typical saw as future renditions of children. If a child’s parents were actors, people assumed the child would become good at acting. If a child’s parents were bakers, then it was assumed the child would take over the family bakery. Kotomi was making it a point to become just as intelligent as her parents so she could help continue their work after she graduated from a university. But the fact her parents were professional scientists wasn’t something that bother her; it was the fact that the conversation about them would reveal her true self. She was trying her hardest to show she wasn’t a selfish girl anymore. The purple haired girl did her best everyday to be as polite as possible to others. She had no problems sharing food, and she even gave up beloved books so others could enjoy them too. But the fact still remained she was just as much to blame as the plane that crashed into the sea. God had taken them away to prove a lesson to her. He wanted to show her nothing good came from being spoiled or self-centered.
But before Kichiro could go on to fully decode the sins of her past, food came and completely altered the conversation. She was honestly relieved and thankful at God’s willingness to let her keep such things a secret a bit longer. Every day she had to live with the pain and remain her promise to God; it was nice to know that he wasn’t going to torment her by making the world conscious of her promise. The girl feed him part of her meal even if he somehow got the same dish, and to her delight, he enjoyed it.
“That is really good. Might have to remember to visit this restaurant a bit more often…and I guess I should be glad they took my rather vague “cheapest on the menu” order to give me a plate of it as well.”
”Really? Do you really like it?” she innocently pestered.
As he scooted away and began to eat his meal, she decided to concentrate on her own. The tiny girl broke her meal into pieces before place the pancake in her mouth. Her reaction was the same with every bite: pure bliss. The light and fluffiness of the dough coupled with the texture of the vegetables was amazing. It was ashamed she couldn’t eat okonomiyaki more often since it was delicious. The girl rarely went out to eat since she was perfectly capable of cooking at home. Eating out was ideal for more of a group outing ordeal rather than something she needed to try every single day. However, if she wanted more of the decadent delight, she simply needed to learn how to make it herself. If she did, she could have it for lunch whenever she had enough time before school, or Kotomi could make it the day before and pack her a lunch then. Once she became fairly good, she could create it into cute shapes and other things. After eating a croquette, she decided to learn to make them since they were such tasty treats. Okonomiyaki shouldn’t have been any harder than the other dish.
”Kichiro kun,” she moaned shyly, placing her chopsticks down for a moment. ”Do you mind if I make you lunch?”
If she was going to become good at making okonomiyaki, she needed someone to help eat all the extra servings she would create while testing ingredients and cooking processes. Haru was probably the person she knew best at the school so letting him partake in some of her leftovers was something that ’friends’ did for one another. Besides, he did say he liked the food so if she was somehow able to get this chef’s version down to a simple science, he wouldn’t have a problem with hers. After figuring something like that, she could continue on with experimenting with different ingredients and making other types of sauces instead of something simply like mayonnaise.
”If you don’t like the idea, it’s fine,” she quickly retracted, not wanting him to feel pressured. There were several reasons for him to decline. While Haru did eat her food, it didn’t mean he liked the taste of the things she made. There could have been several reasons for him to never tell her that the things she made and shared with him tasted awful. Humans had different tastes thanks to the fact no human tongue was created the same. Tastebuds came in different numbers, sizes, and types and they varied from tongue to tongue. Just because the basic layout was the same didn’t mean all humans were alike. And then there was the fact Haru might have previous arrangements with another person for the same type of ordeal. He could have a girlfriend that made his lunch. His mother could have packed his lunch daily. There might be some boy in his class that made him extras daily. Kotomi simply didn’t know and the fact there were so many different possibilities to Haru’s lunch habits was the reason why she even asked such an odd thing in the first place. She didn’t want to burden him with having too much food every day. If anything, she could try to find someone else willing to subject themselves to her experimentations in the kitchen; Haru was just the obvious and simplest choice.

Kichiro Haru ___________________________________________________________________________ Looking over at Kotomi, Kichiro was glad that the food arrived to distract them. She seemed to be really upset about whatever it was that was going on between her and her parents. He wished he could help, but at this point he was just a friend, and he didn’t want to ruin anything by prying into her life. She never said anything about it to him before in the past, so she probably didn’t want to bring it up. Besides, there probably was nothing that he could do to help her, and so hearing about it would probably make him feel worse about it. Then again, knowing something was wrong but not knowing exactly what was probably just as terrible a feeling. Still, until she brought it up on her own, he wasn’t going to pester her about it.
His face gave away his feelings as he looked a bit downcast as he ate. It wasn’t depression as more as seriousness with a bit of worry. Kichiro didn’t like the feeling of being in the dark, and he definitely didn’t like the feeling of not being able to help Kotomi. She really seemed so upset about it, but he was stuck between wanting to help and wanting to let her keep her privacy. When she asked if he really liked it, however, he quickly switched to a more lighthearted face. No need to get Kotomi upset about anything else; for now they’ll just enjoy their food.
”Yeah, I do. Maybe not my most favorite dish, but it’ll be something I’ll eat when it’s available.”
With the lunch cooling down as they spoke, Kichiro went back to his own meal. Kotomi seemed to focus on her own as well, and so he just ate in silence. He wasn’t really sure what else to say, so he was planning on letting Kotomi open up another thread of conversation. Besides, when one was enjoying something good like this, it was best to just enjoy the moment of pleasure and not interrupt it with something like talking. As he was always a fast eater, Kichiro was about halfway done when Kotomi spoke up again, and he had to finish swallowing before he could actually say something about her offer of making lunch.
”Uhm, well…” he hesitantly said.
He wasn’t actually sure if he wanted that. It wasn’t that he thought Kotomi was a bad cook, it was just that he didn’t want to burden her with it. Sure, she made the offer, but Kotomi was always thinking about others before herself, so she might have just been trying to be nice. Kichiro always hated making people do more work than necessary. Still, would she get upset if he said no? If she really wanted to do it, then if he rejected it she might draw back into her quiet self, and all the progress he had made (which at this point was ‘make her talk’) would be wiped out. So his response was going to have be delicate enough that he didn’t reject her but left it open so she didn’t have to do it if she didn’t want to.
”Well, if you really want to I guess I won’t mind. But don’t it if you don’t want to. I can find other ways to get lunch if needed.” he responded.
Hopefully that would work out. It let her know he wouldn’t mind if she made lunch, but it also let her know that she didn’t have to do it. So if she really wanted to she could do it, and he’d be fine with it. And if she was just offering to be nice, then there was no pressure on her to do it. Yeah, that would work out fine wouldn’t it? Now then, on to the next issue; what is it that she would be making? He had a feeling it might be this okonomiyaki since, well, she made the offer while they were eating it. So maybe Kotomi had a thing for cooking and wanted to try and make some? That would mean he’d be the ‘guinea pig’, and he didn’t mind that at all. As long as her cooking was decent most of the time, he’d be able to live through the occasional bad recipe.
”So then, what are you going to cook? Is there anything I can do to help?” he asked.
Hopefully there was something he could bring. Even if it was just something to drink, he wanted to help at least a little bit. He wasn’t going to make Kotomi take care of everything for him after all. She already fed him some of her okonomiyaki, and now she was offering to make him lunch. While most guys wouldn’t mind having a girl act like that for them (except maybe the feeding them part), Kichiro didn’t want to be like that. Sure, a little pampering didn’t hurt (who wouldn’t like to have someone pamper them), but at the rate Kotomi was going Kichiro felt like he’d be taking advantage of her. So he was going to at least help with the lunch a little bit.
”Maybe I could come over one day and help make lunch? I need to work on my cooking skill anyway…” he added in, giving Kotomi an option on a way he could help.
It wasn’t a lie actually; if the recipe didn’t involve “insert into microwave”, Kichiro was just about useless. So if Kotomi was able to cook, she’d be a good way to improve his meager abilities. Plus, it would be a good excuse to hang out with her over something that wasn’t school related. That was always a good thing.
