she said reluctantly, her eyes reflecting a dejected look. Tomoyo and Kichiro could only hope that Kouko wouldn’t go so far as to personally thank any of the teachers, but Tomoyo understood they shouldn’t worry about hypothetical situations that might occur after their visit with Kouko. They would get the information they needed, right? That was what mattered.
Kichiro was right... if Ibuki were to call any of the teachers to thank them, she and Kichiro would be found out; or at least, the two of them would seem extremely suspicious for supposedly getting a gift for her on behalf of the teaching staff. It was only until she realized her companion was laughing amidst his ‘concern’ that she realized it’d been a joke. At that point, Tomoyo couldn’t even gather the humor required to laugh at it. That was why she attempted to fake a laugh.
“Aha ha ha...” Definitely fake...
Tomoyo halted her efforts almost immediately.
Her head drooped. “I can’t even laugh at that, because it’s true...”
She subconsciously mirrored Kichiro’s actions and picked up her menu again and glanced over its contents. They didn’t sell full-sized cakes on the menu...
Even if Ibuki Kouko did end up calling the teachers to thank them, it wasn’t like anything that might happen after that would be overly difficult to deal with. The worst that could happen would be Kouko questioning themm which would require her seeking them out in the first place. It seemed unlikely that someone would go so far as to hunt people down merely to ask them why their stories were contradictory with the facts. Tomoyo could only think it would cause problems if they were to go see her again. Even then, a situation like that wouldn’t be so terrible at all. Moreover, this was all a “what-if” possibility. It was useless to think so much about it.
She went over the plan in her head again. Tomoyo didn't exactly trust Kichiro to be able to pull off their plan flawlessly on the spot. He seemed like the kind of guy who would mess up under pressure. That was why she wanted to be sure she knew what to do. They would congratulate Kouko, give her the cake, and then ask about Fuko’s condition. It didn’t sound so hard when it was put so simply. In fact, she could even go as far as to say it sounded easy to accomplish. As for the cake, since they didn’t sell full-sized cakes on the menu, they would just need to make a special request to buy one. The only worry she had was concerning the price.
Kichiro clearly shared the same worries. “So then, I guess we’ll have to split the cost of the cake then. Hopefully it’s not too much for a full one,” he said, A piece would seem a little insincere...”
“Obviously,” Tomoyo commented plainly. Of course one piece would seem a little insincere. It’d make it seem like they just brought her leftovers from a restaurant. But, that would almost be spot-on though, wouldn’t it be? Almost.
“Anyway, that’s exactly what I was thinking. About splitting the cost.” It’d be the only way to buy the cake. It might not even be called splitting if they had to use almost all the money they brought with them. Tomoyo had brought only enough with her to get a snack for herself, as well as a little extra.
As if on cue, the waitress just arrived at their table. She was the same one who had gotten them their drinks. “Would you two like anything else?” she asked in that cheery, professional voice that was common for the job.
Tomoyo gave a nod to answer for the both of them. “Is it possible for us to order a cake? A full-sized cake, I mean,” she asked the waitress. "As a gift for someone." Sure, they could have gone to a bakery to get what they needed, but they were already here. At least the answer was a positive one.
Smiling with satisfaction, Tomoyo turned to Kichiro. “Hey, what kind of cake should we get? Will red velvet cake be fine?” She had her menu open on the table, pointing at her selection. On the menu it was written only as a slice, but she was positive they would be able to get it in a full-sized cake form.
