It has been said that the the hardest time of the year is when school starts, and Fuukami Haruka saw this year as no exception. The pollen counts were high, as per the spring, the starting of a new year offered many stomach jitters, and new students tended to have trembled in their feet. However, she had lived in Hikarizaka her entire life. She was more than prepared. In fact, to some degree, the first year was eager to get started, so she sat in the first desk on the left of the first row, closest to the large window that covered nearly a quarter of the wall.
There were so many things to do and see and achieve and there was not enough time. After all, this new school feel would not last long. So Haruka set her mind to work exceptionally hard, in order to ensure that everything went well. Even though she never was the social butterfly -- nor were her sister and cousin -- she could make do. Still, it made her fret at night because if she was going to get involved with the student government, which she definitely wanted to do, then her best manners, a sense of leadership and an ability to get along with others were all required. Regardless, that took time to build up. On the first day of school, it would take some time to get all the roles sorted: Disciplinary Committee representative, Health representative and Class Representative. The last one was the jackpot. Surely, the bespectacled brunette would claim what little prestige she could from such a position.
For now, though, her ambitions could wait. The teacher now had just entered the room, so she sat upright and poised with gleaming amethyst eyes and focused as the woman introduced herself. Sato Michie was a plain looking woman with caramel colored eyes and wavy chestnut hair all the way down to her waist. She seemed fairly young for a teacher and she wore standard attire: a proper white blouse and a dark brown pencil skirt. Although Sato-sensei smiled warmly, she paced around her desk too much to be considered calm, with footwork small enough to fit inside a pie tin yet rigid enough to look as if her feet were fitted inside boxes.
"Thank you for having me as your new teacher. Actually, it is my first year teaching here so would you all be so kind to introduce yourselves? Go on, tell us your name, your old middle school, and something interesting about you or something you want us to know about you. Those in the first row may try. Why don't we start with you, Fuukami-chan, alright?"
"Of course, ma'am," the freshwoman replied politely before standing up. "Hello, everyone. My name is Fuukami Haruka and I came here from Hikarizaka Middle School. I've lived here my entire life." While her words seemed a bit formal, the brunette did her best to offer her fellow students a kind smile and a small bow. When she saw that Miss Sato was pleased with her work, Haruka immediately sat down and looked at the person sitting next to her.
"Good job! It must be nervous going up first but don't worry, please. Now, may the next student please go next!" Sato requested as she glanced at the young man in the second desk. The young teacher had heard there were quite a few new students out of town, so she would have to try and empathize with them and set them at ease. Nonetheless, however, it seemed that the other students, even the locals got nervous as well. Thus, she had to do her best, for the young lady who had just went and the young man that was going up, and everyone else too.

'Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no!' The azure-haired young boy panicked as he saw the teacher gesture for him to stand up. Feeling the words catch in his throat as he willed his shaking legs to make him stand up from his seat, he gathered his courage. "U-um...! M-my name is...!" He managed to stutter, terrified by all the students' gazes at him. He found himself freezing up and was no longer able to speak so he just ended up sitting down in his chair, his face turning beet red. "I'm really sorry! Um, would it be alright for me just to write my name on the board...?" He mumbled quietly, barely audible to even the teacher, who was stood literally less than 5 meters away from him. "Um, okay. Go ahead!" The teacher replied, forcing a smile. You could practically see the sweat drop of ridicule falling off of her forehead, although she tried her best to understand as the young boy gingerly got out of his seat, made his way up to the blackboard and began to write his name, drawing his life story with the chalk in the form of small pictures.
"Well, uh...my name is Hayashi Yuuki and I'm 14 years old. I come from a junior high in Tokyo that goes by the name of Hikari Middle School. I moved here recently as my father got a job promotion and the family was already looking for a change of scenery, so we decided to move closer to my dad's new workplace. I was originally meant to attend the local junior high school, but since the teachers saw how smart I was they moved me up to this high school-- huh?"
Yuki paused mid speech as he heard the students begin to snicker and whisper behind his back. 'Why is everyone laughing at me...?' He thought to himself as he scanned the blackboard for any possible mistakes and froze. He stared at the characters he had used for his name: he had written the kanji for chopsticks! "Gah?!" He unintelligibly exclaimed before hurriedly grabbing the chalk eraser and correcting the kanji to the character used for the word "woods" before hurrying back to his seat. 'Ah, how embarrassing...! And I thought I'd finally be able to fit in...' He thought to himself dejectedly. He had wanted to make a good impression on all of the new classmates he would be spending the next year with, although his dreams were now crushed. 'Ah, well... I guess it can't be helped.' He thought, a sigh of resignation escaping from his lips as he slumped forward onto his desk.

From the very beginning, Haruka should have suspected that things would go wrong. The teacher probably never meant to come across so strong but the other student -- a boy -- just barely a teenager and more so a child got up like a panicking deer in headlights.
Like laser beams, her eyes trained on him but softened when she realized they weren't helping. Soon, things took a turn for the interesting (or the worse; it depended on perspective), and when the boy suggested to write his name on the board, Miss Sato immediately took up the opportunity, forcing a smile, obviously strained by how troubled the boy was. She did not intend to cause him any harm, surely, but even the brunette couldn't help but raise a brow at him illustrating his life's story.
Creative (and talented too, his writing was as neat as a member of the Calligraphy club's) as he may be, perhaps that was the wrong idea... And the kanji was wrong too, but instead of mockery, as found in some of the meaner-spirited students or pity, like in Sato Michie's dark brown eyes, or even just plain concern like in a frail-looking green haired girl's tremulous gaze, Haruka's amethyst orbs maintained a sense of strictness and dignity.
She gave him credit for a pretty lengthy speech. It made her grateful because it allowed Fuukami a better idea of who this kid was, but he was practically an innocent little lamb in Hikarizaka. Surely, no one was capable of true cruelty; in fact, Hikarizaka's problems were little more than that could be expected on slice-of-life shows directed for kids under the age of five. Unfortunately, this also meant that people acted less their age and more akin to a numerical measurement known as their shoe size. Of course, it simply infuriated this young lady.
With the greatest glare she could possibly muster, the first year, gave all the snickering children icy, frigid daggers for eyes. They would not get away with such insolence. This was her class and she expected better of them. If she were to become class rep of this class, it would certainly make her a laughing stock too, but Haruka had no choice to make best of what she already had, and utilize it as best as she can.
"What do you think you're doing," seethed the fifteen year old girl at her pejorative ruffians for classmates with words meant for fighting rather than questioning. She soon continued with a much calmer tone of voice, but it was as cold as a glacier. "Hayashi certainly does things over the top but he is new here and was uncomfortable and unnerved long before you decided to open your insidious word holes. If you intend to treat people who just moved here like that then you must be a disgrace to everything this entire town and school stands for, so shut it."
Perhaps she was a bit harsh, since those students shrunk back in their seats like they had just wet their pants. To no one's surprise, they started talking about her already, but because she couldn't care less, their drivel died out quickly. Now, though, she had to deal with the child. Sato was covered, though, although maybe a bit humiliated and scandalized that a little girl disciplined the other students better than she ever could, not unlike a sergeant.
But no one ought to worry about that, Haruka thought. She was used to being alone; she almost always was, if it weren't for her loving family. It meant her dream of becoming student council president quite a bit harder but this usually held no bearing over whether she got the position of class rep after all. Still, she was pretty severe. It came out harsh even right on her tongue, but... Normally, she was so well-behaved. The disappointment in her fellow students must be wracking her apart; yet, even that wasn't just it. There just was no way she could leave someone in need like that alone. There was no way that she would not stand up for justice. As a strongly opinionated woman, she tried to be courteous when she could but the dignity of the whole could not be sacrificed because of a few bad seeds.
Or so she rationalized it.
Anyway, Haruka's priorities were leagues away from these frivolities. Almost immediately, she turned to Hayashi Yuki with a kinder gaze and a warmer voice. She even bore a soft half-smile for him, but it was a pretty worried smile that was meant to try to get him to open up to her.
"Are you alright?" the brunette asked, adjusting her glasses so they glinted in the softly lit classroom.
After all, she could not bear to see a child in pain, choking back sobs because of something out of his control. He reminded her too much of her little sister. If he were not so bright, she would imagine they would be in the same grade. But luckily, he was not crying, only sighing.
Turns out that everything would be alright. Things calmed down in what seemed to be about an hour for her fluttering, alert heart but it was much shorter than that: about two minutes.
Already the next student was up, but she could barely pay him any attention, only noting his gender.
However... things would be okay, right? She could only hope.

Yuki simply stared in astonishment at the girl next to him as she gave her short lecture to the class on the topic of manners and discipline, astounded by her confidence and ability to even be able to speak to a class full of strangers, let alone tell them off!
He felt a sense of admiration building up inside him; she was likely to be the kind of person that normally ends up being a member of the disciplinary committee. 'I want to grow up to have confidence like that...' He thought absentmindedly, returning to his previous position of being slumped over his desk. His thoughts began to wander off to an imaginary land in which he had the ability to be brave, although he was soon brought back to reality by a voice.
"Are you okay?" The girl sitting next to him had asked. He immediately sat up straight, not wanting to have to hear a lecture on how to sit in class. The girl seemed kinder than she appeared, however, shown in her concerned tone of voice.
"Y-yeah, I'm fine..." He replied, avoiding all eye contact and giving a meek smile of embarrassment. 'Perhaps we can become friends,' he muttered to himself; a rare encouraging thought. 'But I'll have to try harder if I want to make more than one!' And with his new-found determination, he forced himself to smile at her, facing her directly. He immediately felt discomfort, but he knew that he would have to get used to it if he really wanted to fulfill his desire to be able to communicate with others normally.

To his reply, Haruka nodded with an unreadable expression. Friends? She was sort of inexperienced when it came to friendship. Back in middle school, of course she had friends, but she didn't ever hang out with them outside of school. Not only that, the first year was never particularly close with them. In all her years of middle school, she could only faintly recall that she had one dinner date and that was only with a female friend, one who moved to a faraway school. Aside from that, there were only a few people she recognized staying in Hikarizaka. The rest moved to Tokyo.
However, Fuukami was finished with ruminating to herself and promptly gave Hayashi her best reply, "I'd be glad to be your friend. I'm sorry if I was being far too bold before," she said with a lowered head, while dark hair, as soft as silk, swayed and framed her face. Thinking about her actions now, Haruka noticed that her spiel had seemed to have frightened away other students, who evidently leaned away from her.
Eventually this led into darker thoughts. Her amethyst purple eyes sharpened and her thin brows furrowed in worry. What if she accidentally drove away potential friends that Yuki could have made? He was just a normal boy, albeit a bit clumsy when he was overwhelmed. He did not deserve the friendship of someone who could have ruined his prospects.
An equally haunting fear entered the young girl's mind now, causing her to tremble slightly, if by only a millimeter. Thankfully, life went on, the students were all introduced and the teacher called the class to attention once more. Thus, for the first time, Miss Sato put her to ease with a new announcement.
"Now, the next time we have homeroom, we shall elect our representatives. If you would like to become one, please talk to me after class and ready a short speech. Your speech should be about one or two minutes and we will decide our representatives by popular vote based on them. Understand?"
"Yes, teacher!" the rest of the students chorused. Weakly, Haruka added soft, low tones to the symphony of adolescents eager for the next class to begin.
And so, it was decided. She would speak up after class before the next bell rang.
This moment opened up many possibilities. Without a doubt, the brunette was feeling quite eager. Although she felt a lot of excitement, she was also a little fretful too, but nonetheless, it filled her up with determination.

Tag;Fuukami HarukaIs this how it works? Since you kept tagging me in your posts I wanted to tag you, too. Yuki continued to smile at the girl, waiting to see if he would be granted a response. Just as he assumed that the girl had chosen not to respond to him, the girl spoke out suddenly, startling Yuki and making him turn back around to face her.
"I'd be glad to be your friend. I'm sorry if I was being far too bold before," She had said with a lowered head, startling him with a reply he hadn't expected.
"No, no, please don't worry about that. If anything, I should apologize for making you stand up for me..." He replied, scratching the back of his head in embarrassment. "But I'm happy that you would even consider making friends with someone like me!" He continued cheerfully, smiling sincerely now. She had heard him muttering? Surely she must have sharp ears, being able to hear a comment at such a low volume. He decided to try and go talk to other people; acquaint himself with the classmates he would be spending the next year with- but at that very moment, as if badly timed, the teacher called out for the class' attention, forcing Yuki to return to his seat just as he had gotten up.
"Now, the next time we have homeroom, we shall elect our representatives. If you would like to become one, please talk to me after class and ready a short speech. Your speech should be about one or two minutes and we will decide our representatives by popular vote based on them. Understand?"
Yuki joined in with the chorus of students acknowledging the announcement with a hearty "Yes, Teacher!", giving a bright smile. After all, he had just realized that there was another way to make friends: becoming a member of the student council! In all of the manga he'd read, as well as in his old school, members of the student council were often well-liked and had many friends, as well as being good friends with each other!
It was decided; Yuki wanted to become a member of the student council.
As for how he would go about it and what role he wished to apply for, now that was different. He hadn't really paid much attention in class when he lived in Tokyo, especially not in homeroom, so he didn't really know how to become a member of the student council. He had never felt the need to learn more about the outside world since he already knew what he wanted to do and how to get there. Then there was also the issue of deciding what role to go for. Perhaps he would be the Public Relations Officer, or maybe even the male class representative. After all, wasn't there normally one male and one female? Then again, it probably differed from school to school. He made sure to make a mental note to enquire about it later.
After homeroom had ended, Yuki went up to the teacher in order to ask about student council positions. "Um, Sato-sensei... I was wondering, in this school is there a boy and girl class representative, or is there only one selected per each class?"
