"Ah... I think I forgot my lunch."
"Ehhhhhh?!"
Erina's head swiveled around to stare at Suzume, open-mouthed with one foot out the classroom door. Uneaten food was a thought far too terrible for the ravenous first year. The horror reflected in her large brown pupils seemed almost tangible, and her friend raised her hands as if to hold back the wave of overreactive emotion. "I-it's okay! I'll just go to the cafeteria."
"But that's so saaad!"
The girls fell into step beside each other as they exited the room and started down the hall, Erina clutching her own homemade bento close to her, as if she might lose hers as well. At her old school, she had eaten school lunches a lot, but these days, her mother had been making all of her lunches for her. Maybe to save money?
"Do you want some of my lunch, Suzume-chan?" Erina asked, holding her bento out for the other girl to see. She squinted at it herself, trying to reimagine the contents of the lunch box. There was the rice, the karaage, the vegetables... Oh, but what would she give Suzume? It was all so good...
"You can have... um... a piece of my vegetables!"
A great sacrifice! But she would do it for her dear foodless friend! She smiled and nodded emphatically.
"Oh, um... That's okay. A bread roll will probably be enough for now." The corners of the quieter girl's mouth tugged upward, and there was a silent laughter in her eyes at her friend's "generous" offer. She had been smiling more at school since the energetic Erina had sat beside her on the first day of class.
By the time the pair reached the cafeteria, the lunch rush had already begun. Swarms of students bustled about the counters, and the chatter made raised voices a requirement for communication. Somewhere near the front, a boy was yelling about being pushed, and Erina watched in silent wonder as a second-year forced his way into the chaos and was lost in a sea of uniforms. She was quiet for a moment, absorbing the scene, then quickly snapped back to face Suzume, gripping her arm with a panicked expression.
"Suzume-chan can't go in there! You're gonna diiiiiie!" Her voice was shrill, and she shook her head wildly, pigtails flying about in a frantic mess.
"I... I can do it," the girl replied, though her own voice seemed uncertain. A first year stumbled out of the crowd in tears, and both girls went silent.
"Seee?! Seeeeeee?!" Erina squeaked abruptly, gripping Suzume's arm tighter. "I have to go too to keep you safe! I can... um... hit volleyballs at... Oh, but I'd need to carry a lot of volleyballs... And people might get mad..." She began to fret, still clinging to her friend's arm, but Suzume took a deep breath and shook her head solemnly.
"No... You might die too. I have to go alone." She turned and looked Erina in the eye, and the pigtailed student gazed back in horror but slowly released her grip. Suzume approached the edge of the crowd, turned to nod back at her, then was gone before Erina could try to stop her. It was noble, she thought, for her friend to risk so much on her own. Filling one's tummy was a serious business, and Suzume was the bravest, most honorable girl ever. A female samurai, just like Tomoe Gozen!
"Suzume-chan is quiet but strong, so she'll be okay," she reassured herself. The girl was shy, but she was in the kendo club, so that meant something, right? Yes, she would retrieve her meal and emerge victorious! Maybe it would be good to prepare a dance or a cheer to celebrate her return?
"Yay for Suzume-chan!" Erina practiced aloud, clapping to herself. But that was so boring! It would be cool if she knew how to do a cartwheel or something... Like a real cheerleader! There wasn't any room in the cafeteria for that though, was there? She glanced around. The only spot that seemed to have any space was a distant corner of the room where...
"Okazaki-sempai?"
It was him, wasn't it? Perking up, Erina bounded over, dodging other students as she made her way across the cafeteria and toward the indifferent looking senior leaning against the wall.
"Okazaki-sempai~! Now you can help me with my cheer!"

"But why?! If you want your own you need to buy it yourself!"
He was perfectly satisfied with the leftover bread. Well not really. But given how much effort it usually took to get the more flavorful ones, he was perfectly okay with what was leftover given how he didn't have to risk his life to get it. Then again...he did like new flavors from time to time...
"Think about it. If we're both fighting the crowd that just means we'll be fighting each other. If you buy both there's less competition."
Granted since they would both be buying bread for themselves they wouldn't be so much competing...in fact if they went in together it was possible, through some sort of teamwork, to get what they both wanted. They were both pretty strong after all. But...that seemed like so much effort. Not to mention it was so...loud over there. Besides he was fairly certain he could get Sunohara to do it solo. It would just take the right...motivation.
"You say that but...I don't think I can make it out alive with two..."
True. The last time he had entered that madness he couldn't even see what he was buying. Getting to the bread required a tremendous amount of pushing, shoving, and effort. Then, when he had reached the eye of the storm, the pressure was so great every moment threatened to either fling him aside or have him be buried among the weight and pressure of the surrounding students. Making out anything over the heat waves emitting from so many packed bodies, as well as the general chaos of so many students crowding over what little room there was, forced him to simply find a bit of packaging that looked different and grab what he could. Luckily getting out was easier then getting in, but by the time he was finally given time to enjoy his meal he just wanted to fall asleep.
"Ah...maybe next time then"
He turned to walk away from the boy, not really having a destination in mind, but knowing he needed to make the moment needlessly more dramatic.
"W-wait you're just going to give up like that Okazaki?!"
"Oh no, I'm just going to ask the Rugby Team for help."
Hook.
"WHY?!"
"Because they seem like they're tough enough to do it"
Line.
"I'M TOUGHER THEN ALL OF THEM!"
"But you just said-"
Sinker.
"ORYAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH"
He could hear the battle cry of the blonde gradually disappear behind him, and given how loud the blonde usually was, it was a true testament to the cacophony of noise from the cafeteria that his voice was so quickly snuffed out. He moved to the side and leaned on a nearby pillar, hoping to reduce his presence in the area so he could have a few moments to himself. Unfortunately relaxing in this environment was truly a challenge. Though he had gotten used to it by now, there was just nothing beating the quiet of an empty classroom to nap in. Maybe he could go after lunch? Or mayb-a sudden chill ran down his spine. Was that his name he had just heard? No it couldn't have been. The cafeteria was far too loud for that. It was more like...he had the sensation of his name being called. Almost a premonition. Something was coming. A teacher?! Or...perhaps someone who was here to pick a fight with him? Was Sunohara rushing to him after pissing someone off?!
"Okazaki-sempai~! Now you can help me with my cheer!"
Ah...it was much worse then he expected. The only one who could utter such an embarrassing yet nonsensical line was none other then Yasuda. Ordinarily he would have assumed he had misheard her due to all the noise but...lately he's learned saying random things is a frequent habit of hers.
"Cheer? I thought you played volleyball? Oh did you mean you were a cheerleader for the volleyball team? I didn't know we had anything like that but...well it's good that you're working so hard even in a place like this."
Truthfully, he was a bit surprised he was able to act as naturally as he did considering the abrupt meeting. Well...they were friends now after all. A thought that should be familiar yet...still felt foreign and strange.

"Ehhh?"
Erina stared blankly for a moment, confused by the upperclassman's false conclusion. "But I do play volleyball, silly~! I told you so before!" Why had he thought she was a volleyball cheerleader? Though it would be fun to have something like that... They could have cute uniforms and maybe she could join them! Oh, but she wouldn't be able to cheer and play volleyball at the same time, would she? How disappointing!
"Ah, but you're right that I'm working hard~!" she continued, perking up as she set that train of thought aside, her mind returning to her original topic. "Because the cheer has to be worthy of a samurai!" Tiny arms flew open, physically displaying the amount of greatness that the task required, and the girl grinned. If there were two people working on it, then that would make Suzume-chan's cheer twice as great, right? She prattled on without pausing to allow her one-man audience to question the context-lacking flood of words that dribbled from her mouth.
"Do you know any samurai cheers? Oh, maybe there aren't any... Cheerleaders don't go to kendo matches, do they? Maybe they should! It would be more fun~! They could do flips with... with swords!"
And there the train of thought went, drowning in the floodwaters.

He seemed to be in a particularly imaginative mood. He had answered her with a joke, though low in quality, still contained a fair amount of charm. He imagined that joke as a small thought bubble, smiling with boundless joy to not only have been born into the world, but also to be given the purpose of making another smile. What a noble life. What a wonderful purpose.
"But I do play volleyball, silly~! I told you so before!"
He watched in dismay as he imagined his joke flying straight over her head and landing among the students fighting tooth and nail for there lunch. Ah...what a cruel world. Perhaps if he had spent less time daydreaming and more time paying attention to the excitable girl, he may have been prepared for what was to come.
"Do you know any samurai cheers?"
Uh...
"Oh, maybe there aren't any..."
Well yea-
"Cheerleaders don't go to kendo matches, do they?"
Why wou-
"Maybe they should!"
Err...
"It would be more fun~!"
But wh-
"They could do flips with... with swords!"
Wait wait wait wait wait. If he was pulled into her world he would never escape. Bold move Yasuda. Her ability to spout nonsense far exceeded his capacity to process it. He would need to counteract quickly, lest she prattle on forever and bind him in a world of impossible-to-follow segue ways. Think, Tomoya, think. Something about samurais...and cheerleaders...flips...swords. The start of an idea began to form in his mind. She had adeptly subverted his come back with ignorance, it was time to counteract with hard reality!...well sort of.
"Oh didn't you know? We used to have a samurai cheerleader club here. Unfortunately one of the members accidentally sliced there hand off while performing a routine and they had to shut down the club because it was too dangerous. Shame really, they were aiming for regionals."
"EHHHHHHHH?!"
"Shhh!"
He had won. But at what cost? He had instinctively tried to silence her but it was already too late. The damage had been done. He could feel a number of eyes staring at them as the area immediately around them seemed to go quiet all of a sudden. This was bad. They needed to leave. Immediately. He grabbed her arm and walked out towards the hallway, being careful not to make it look like he was holding hands with her as well as careful not to walk so fast that he was obviously dragging her away (even though it was precisely what he was doing). He was lucky she had not resisted, for had she struggled, any attention on them would have increased ten-fold. After they had escaped into the hallway, he briefly questioned his actions. He could have just as easily continued talking to her as before. The onlookers would have lost interest when they realized nothing was going on and things would have continued from there. Was he ashamed to be friends with her? No. Impossible. He was ashamed of himself more then he could be of anyone else. Then...perhaps he simply didn't want others to associate them together? He didn't mind if his reputation was shot...but he didn't want the same to happen to her. She was a lively girl who seemed to have friends, a life, and a close family. A life. If he somehow managed to deprive her from that he would never be able to forgive himself.

Eyes wide and pigtails standing on end, the alarmed squeal left Erina's mouth before she could fully process the ridiculousness of what she'd just been told. There was no time to ruminate on the story after her sudden shout either, as she soon found herself being shushed and tugged along past the onlookers and out into the hallway, still attempting to recollect her thoughts. Okazaki's movement had been so immediate and swift, she could barely register their relocation until it had already happened.
A few scattered students milled about, but the hallway was infinitely more quiet than the packed and boisterious lunchroom. In this relative calm, the freshman recovered herself quickly and looked up at the older boy curiously. "Ehhh...? Why did we move?"
"Well..."
Okazaki paused and seemed to turn his gaze elsewhere. What was he looking at? Erina's own eyes flitted back and forth between the upperclassman's face and the general direction of his stare but could find nothing of note. Was it just the area in general? There was a lot more space here than in the cafeteria...
"... if you were going to practice flips this would be the place to do it right?" "Oh, there's a lot more space to practice here~!"
Their words overlapped as both spoke at once, and Erina turned to face Okazaki, her already normally cheery expression even cheerier and bursting with delight.
"Okazaki-sempai had the same idea as me!" Usually he said and did things that didn't make much sense or seemed a little mean, but this proved they had things in common, right? "Ah, but...! But...! We should just do normal cheers because cutting off a hand would be scary!" At this, a flicker of concern tainted her otherwise bright expression, and she rubbed her own wrist absentmindedly.

"Well..."
He still didn't have an answer. He was really off his game today. While he had had plenty of practice dealing with one airhead, two back to back seemed a bit much for him to handle. No. That wasn't it. Though he didn't take pride in too many things, he couldn't live with himself if he was unable to handle Sunohara and Yasuda back to back. He had just been...too relaxed at the time. Off guard. She had launched a surprise attack while he was basking in the fruits of his previous victory. Now here he was, struggling to find an answer to her perfectly reasonable question. Unfortunately he had no way of conveying the truth to her. Partially because he unsure how to explain his feelings to her. Partially because he wasn't entirely sure what the truth was himself. What were they talking about before? Something about cheer-leading? Weak. He knew his response would be weak. Unfortunately his time was up.
"... if you were going to practice flips this would be the place to do it right?" "Oh, there's a lot more space to practice here~!"
Game Over. If he was on her wavelength then he had truly lost. Though he was none too pleased about the loss, at the very least this would put his actions above suspicion. He had been pretty lucky though. Had it have been literally anybody else, they would have immediately been suspicious of his explanation. His completely nonsensical explanation. One that had somehow coincided with hers. The more he talked to her the more foreign she seemed to be.
While his blank eyes showed no signs of the silly ruminations occurring in his mind, her countenance, in sharp contrast, had changed entirely. Though she was usually cheerful, her eyes seemed to burst with joy as she loudly exclaimed the obvious, yet embarrassing, truth.
"Okazaki-sempai had the same idea as me!"
A light shade of crimson colored his cheeks as he was briefly lost for words. Some people may have been silent after such an exchange, allowing the awkwardness to hang in the air for a bit before changing the subject and moving on - perhaps with a few halfhearted laughs to spruce up the dead air. Others may have immediately made note of it, perhaps as an amusing coincidence, thus dispelling any awkwardness immediately and allowing the conversation to move on. Even a childish "Jinx!" would have been preferable to her current reaction, as it would have immediately changed the subject and shifted attention away from the original event. Yasuda, as unexpected as ever, chose none of these things. He wasn't sure if the event was significant to her, but there shared words seemed to make her so happy, he was literally lost for words. Her eyes seemed to sparkle and her smile seemed just as bright as when her stomach had been grumbling for a while and her food had just been delivered. Something he had said had caused her to light up brighter then the stars in the sky. He wasn't sure how he felt about that.
Luckily, he didn't need to know as she quickly changed the subject. For once it was a blessing.
"Ah, but...! But...! We should just do normal cheers because cutting off a hand would be scary!
He let out a long, drawn out, much needed sigh. It seemed to carry with it all of the confusion, emotions, and events of the past few minutes. Perhaps he could finally steer the conversation towards one that he could actually follow.
"Let's try this again. Why do you need to practice cheering?"

There was a long sigh, and Erina's thoughts were turned away from the horror of severed hands and back to the source of the exasperated utterance. What was the problem?
Okazaki was being weird again. Oh well. At least they had finally agreed on something. It was a sign of an even stronger friendship to come, she was certain of it! She smiled up at him, opening her mouth to launch yet another stream of words, but, for once, she was the one who was interrupted.
"Let's try this again. Why do you need to practice cheering?"
Erina froze, mouth still half open, his words sinking in. She... She hadn't explained herself had she? Her eyes widened for a moment as she became aware of her mistake, then amusement took over, and she giggled. How silly of her! She had been so excited about the cheer, she hadn't stopped to think about what she was saying. Okazaki must have been so confused! "Ahhhh, I'm sorry, Okazaki-sempai! Okay, do-over!"
Still laughing, she turned her back on him, paused to collect herself, then twirled about to face him again with a smile, hand raised in greeting. "Hi Okazaki-sempai~! Do you want to help me make a cheer for my friend, Suzume-chan? She's like a samurai fighting in the... the great bread battle!"
There! Now he could understand, right?

Had he known she thought him weird, he would have likely fallen so fast and hard that the impact would have left him comatose for an undetermined period of time. And there were already enough of those types walking around. Fortunately for him he did not possess the ability to read minds. He relaxed noticeably as she seemed to understand her mistake. Though he had doubts there conversation would ever be "normal", perhaps now they could have one he might, at the very least, be able to follow. By the time she had fully composed herself, he had managed to become fully relaxed as well.
"Hi Okazaki-sempai~!"
You need to start from there?
"Do you want to help me make a cheer for my friend, Suzume-chan?"
A strange question, but at least he was following so far.
"She's like a samurai fighting in the...the great bread battle!"
Even when she attempted to explain herself as carefully as possible she still made little sense. Fortunately for him, his past experiences with the girl had prepared him for this moment and he was able to work out the logic behind her words. The "bread battle" was likely referring to the same warzone that Sunohara had thrown himself headlong into. He wasn't sure about the samurai part, but how was a cheer going to help her out of that life-or-death situation?
"I doubt your friend would be able to see you in that massive crowd, much less understand that you were cheering for her. Why didn't you just go in with her? That would have been far more helpful."
Hypocrisy had never tasted so sweet.

Erina pouted in protest to Okazaki's criticisms, puffing her cheeks. "But even if she doesn't see it, she'll feel it, right? And then she'll get lots and lots of bread and share some with me!" At the menion of food, the discontent on her face dissolved, and she resumed her natural optimistic state. Yes, if she put her heart into it, the power of her cheer would reach out to Suzume, and she would emerge from the warzone triumphant! Then if she cheered upon her return, the bold samurai would realize the source of her sudden surge of strength on the battlefield and reward her!
"And I tried to help her! But Suzume-chan is very, very kind! She went alone instead of risking my life too! Don't you think that's soooo brave?" The thought made her feel warm, and for a moment, she imagined the other girl in full samurai garb, wielding a katana as she raced across the countryside on horseback to defend her land and loved ones. How honorable! She was proud to have such a wonderful friend!
"So that's why I need to cheer for her! But I don't know any samurai cheers... It's probably different from volleyball cheers, right?" Her brow furrowed as she strained her mind, grasping for any memory she had of such things. There was a cheer club at her old school that she had seen a few times during sports day... And sometimes her old volleyball team would come up with their own little rallies... Maybe she should make some kind of flag or banner?
"What kind of cheers have you seen, Okazaki-sempai? You must know lots and lots more because you're my sempai, right?"

"What kind of cheers have you seen, Okazaki-sempai? You must know lots and lots more because you're my sempai, right?"
"Not really. Besides, I'm only two years ahead of you."
"But that's two whoooole more years of cheers! You must have seen some at Hikarizaka, right? Or when you were a kid? Um... My family went to a baseball game once! Did you ever see a cheer like that?"
"Maybe on the television."
"Ehhh? But you must have gone out with your family or your friends before, Okazaki-sempai! There are lots of cheers at events all the time~!"
"No. I haven't."
"Ehhhh?! But! But Okazaki-sempai, you must do something, right? Like how I have volleyball and, um... and go jogging and... Ah, you must have been in a club before!"
"What does this have to do with cheering?"
"But... But we're friends now and I still don't really know what you do... That's not fair..."
"Even if you say that...I don't really know what you mean."
"You don't just stay home, right? That would be boring~"
"I don't like staying at home."
"Then what do you do when you're not at home? Stop being a meanie and just tell meeee!"
"I...walk around. You could call it...an exploration club."
"Exploration club...? Ahhh, do you get to visit lots of cool places?"
"Something like that."
"Wow~! I haven't been to many places yet! Can I do that too? Ah, but I have volleyball... When do you meet?"
"Whenever I want."
"That sounds fun!"
"Well it's not actually a real-"

"Erina-chan?"
The entrance to the cafeteria swung forward, and Suzume's head poked out from behind the door. Her eyes fell upon the senior standing beside her friend, and she hesitated but took a few tentative steps toward them. "I thought I heard you..." The extra bread roll in her hand did not escape Erina's notice.
"Ahh! But I didn't finish your cheer yet!" Erina squealed, turning away from Okazaki to rush toward her. Then, turning back, she called, "You can help me with the cheer next time, okay~? Oh! And we should definitely, definitely go exploring on... um... Saturday! After school! I want to explore the shopping district more~! You have to, okay?" She grinned, bouncing on her heels with excitement, then waved a goodbye and took off down the hall, dragging Suzume along by the arm, who scrambled to keep up with the sudden movement.
What kinds of places did an exploration club visit? She was eager to find out. The town was still fairly new to her, and there were probably lots of amazing places Okazaki could show her! If he was always exploring, he had probably seen lots of cheers! Why hadn't he just said so? The weekend couldn't come quickly enough.

The crowd was vicious. He had to resist the urge to use his fists several times as he was pummeled by the crowd left and right. Who kept shoving him so much?! Every time he turned to confront someone he was simply met with another push from a different direction. This was taking too long and he was running out of time. The bread. His one goal. That's the only thing that mattered. He had to make it to the front! He unconsciously salivated as he slowly neared his goal, but his mind had little time to fantasize about the taste as he suddenly found himself in a headlock.
"Don't even think about it!"
Before he could grasp what was happening to him he had been flung from the crowd by a large brute of a man, landing square on his back. He grunted, the shock of the throw still holding him down for a bit.
"Damn it..."
He muttered to himself. Damn Judo club. He would get back at them later. Probably. Maybe. But for now...the bread! He quickly picked himself up and ran in once again with a shout.
"Return to the battlefield!"
Jumping above the crowd, he rode the wave of bodies as if they were waves of water washing against him from an ocean view with a sunset horizon.
Sunohara Youhei...slowly makes his way to the goal...for the gold medal he's always dream about...his prize...Yakisoba bread! Go Sunohara! Do your best Sunohara!
As his inner monologue spurred him forward, an anchor materialized out of nowhere and snagged his. Desperately he attempted to swim up for air, but instead found himself falling to the ocean depths, a familiar voice ringing in his ear.
"I'm tellin' you not to cut in line!"
Again he was thrown. Again he had failed to achieve his goal. Again...that damn Judo club! More specifically, a solitary member, but that small fact seemed to elude the boy as he continued to blame the entire club for his misfortune.
This was it. His last chance. The crowds were thinning and with it, any chance of getting any decent bread. With his stomach growling, he decided to tap into the brain power he so often left neglected to solve this problem for him. He would have to avoid the Judo club. To do that he would approach from the side. Not only that, but he would have to get in and out as quickly as possible. This was the moment of truth.
He moved off to the side of the crowd and waited for a brief opening. The tall Judo club member that had barred his way twice now was on the other side. He'd never notice him here. Chance! He slipped into the crowd. A dodge here. A feint there. Years of experience had hardened his body and trained his mind to win any encounter. So what if he wasn't the smartest or most motivated student in the school? If he could solve his problems with his good looks and strong arms, that was more then good enough. And these students were nothing compared to him. One on one he was certain he could knock out any one of them...but as a crowd, one wrong move and he would get trampled. Looking ahead, he could see the bread of his choice quickly dwindling with his position moving at a snails pace. Time to level up.
"GRAAAAAAAAAAAH"
He shoved his way in, rudely making his way through the crowd before finally getting to the front. Finally! He could feel the pressure increase, as well as warning signs go off that his prescence had been noticed. He quickly chose a treasure at random, handed over the money, and dodged out to the side and made his escape. It had been a close call with several failed attempts, but fortunately escaping the crowd had been much easier then entering it.
Treasure in hand, his eyes beamed wide, a huge grin plastered on his face.
"Itadakima-"
It was then he realized he was only holding one bread. He was supposed to get two. One for Okazaki. He grimaced at the taunt that had caused him to take up the challenge. If returned to Okazaki now he would just prove his point. That would be unacceptable. He turned towards the crowd, which was now harshly diminishing, and realized with dismay the more desirable bread was likely gone by this point. Perhaps...Okazaki wouldn't notice if he got him some Anpan? The packaging looks similar after all. It's really hard to tell from the outside. Unfortunately the blonde didn't think far enough ahead to the consuming of said bread.
With both meals in hand, he briefly looked around for Okazaki but soon realized he wasn't in the cafeteria at all. Where had he gone? Had he asked the Rugby Club for help after all?! He moved to exit the hallway, but while opening the door he heard a voice from the other side that caused him pause
"-we should definitely, definitely go exploring on Saturday! After school! I want to explore the shopping district more~! You have to, okay?"
He moved back instinctively as the voice grew closer, indicating the door was going to open in his face. Two freshman girls walked past him. What was that about? He quickly forgot about it as he located Okazaki.
"Okazaki! I made you wait! Here you go, just as promised!~"
He handed over the Anpan. Okazaki took it without a word. He followed suit as he began to unwrap his bread, too eager to relish his treasure then partake in any conversation at the moment. He didn't question why the other boy had no comment about the Anpan, nor question if that freshman had been talking to him. Perhaps if he had, he would have noticed the troubled expression on the boy's face.
[End]
