To He Who Has Waited

Did he say something wrong when he offered to try and learn them himself? Kichiro was rather confused when all of a sudden Ryou started acting panicky, saying he didn’t have to learn them if he didn’t want to. To be honest, he was sort only interested in learning them for her; if she hadn’t been interested in it then he probably wouldn’t have cared. But he wanted to at least attempt to learn them, so next time they did something like this he wasn’t just sitting there quietly and letting her do all the work. If this was going to be a good relationship, then he was going to have to put work into the relationship too. Besides, it seemed to make Ryou happy when he took interest in her hobbies…
”No, it’s fine. I’d feel bad if I just sat here and did nothing. Besides, I like learning about new things, I just never considered astronomy before, so don’t feel guilty about it okay?” he replied, hoping to calm her down. He noticed she really seemed to put a lot of pressure on herself, afraid to make mistakes and feeling guilty a lot. Of course, the same could be said of him. The both of them were pretty over-analytical about everything. It would probably be a good idea to stop that and just enjoy the moment…
”I’m sure there’s somewhere in town we can see the stars, though I guess if the construction keeps up like it has been it won’t be for much longer…”
What did he like to do? Well, he tended to like to read; he was a pretty big nerd for that, and it was a big reason he had known Kotomi Ichinose. However, his current hobbies had been rather out of the way, if you could count being part of a starfish-carving gang distributing starfish to everyone as wedding invitations as a hobby. Actually…that was probably something she needed to know since it was eating a lot of his free time right now. And it might get worse in the next few days, if Tomoyo wins the election since that meant him, Kyou, and Fuko would be fully responsible for carving…wait, Ryou would probably know about Fuko for obvious reasons. His mind slipped on that note…
”Well, as you might know, I am becoming a world class wooden starfish carver, but other than that I tend to read a lot. Mostly non-fiction, but the occasional fiction as well….I guess I sound kind of boring don’t I?”

She was happy with his reassurance. Indeed, it seemed it was okay with him, even if he wasn't necessarily as enthusiastic about it as her. That meant a lot to her, even if she could not properly find the words for it. Perhaps they would never share the same interests, but at the very least... for someone to listen to what they had been spending their time on... someone special... that reassurance was special as well.
She nodded, a hint of gloom in her otherwise radiant face, when Haru brought up the matter about the fast development of their town. There was not much they could do about it... and perhaps, if things got too urbanized, though it was not that she disliked the new establishments that were popping about Hikarizaka... the stars would hide from them. It made her feel a little melancholy, but she was happy despite it, because Haru-kun knew what she had been thinking.
She wanted to repay the favor a bit, and so, she decided, it was her turn to listen, and so she did, intently, even. He was a little more brief about it than she had been, telling him about a bunch of stuff that he probably did not fully comprehend. She dismissed the thought; the boy had said it was all good, and she would take his word for it.
"Starfish carving?" she stated, and then remembered. "Oh, right, a bunch of people had been helping Fuuko-chan with her sculptures." she continued, more to herself. She had not been involved with it so much, having only been urged by the echinoderm enthusiast around twice or thrice, and she had probably only three of four wooden carvings to show for it. Still, she was definitely aware of it.
"She's.. giving them out for her sister's wedding, right?" The younger Fujibayashi realized she did not know much about what was going on in the life of their little tenant. Perhaps she should pitch in a little more. "I guess I should help, too..." she concluded, even with her doubts over her own dexterity. Perhaps this was what was keeping oneechan rather busy... She felt a little guilty.
She smiled when he remarked that he must be boring. "Well..." To be honest, while a lot of people liked getting their fortunes told, by her, she wasn't really very confident that people appreciated her hobby, and at that point she could relate to Haru's comment. "...non-fiction doesn't necessarily have to be boring." she conceded, a playful flicker dancing in her eyes. Non-fiction was a rather large portion of literature, almost as large as fiction... she liked reading, though mostly on her subjects of interest, and then a bit of romantic fiction...
"What sort of non-fiction do you like most?" It would be funny if he suddenly said something like newspapers. She wasn't really sure what he would find interesting in non-fiction, but she had promised to herself that she would listen to what interested him, and she meant to keep that promise. Technically astronomy is non-fiction... astrology, even, though their claims may be fictitious... Maybe she had found them interesting, once, not just as attractive as her other interests. She waited for him to clarify.

Whew, so she was in on the whole Fuko thing…though that didn’t mean she knew about the whole possible ghost aspect of the whole deal. That would probably be something to not mention to her, unless her ‘fortune-telling skills’ meant in anyway she had psychic powers that would be helpful towards finding the truth about Fuko. As he doubted that conclusion, however, he decided it best to not mention to Ryou; it would probably worry her too much.
”Yep, your sister, Tomoyo, and I have been helping to carve and hand them out to everyone. I’ve gotten pretty good at it if I say so myself,” he said, oddly proud, though he probably carried more wood than he did carve since he had been a bit of an errand boy for the group. He also figured he shouldn’t tell Ryou how he got involved with the whole mess either, mostly just because he was really embarrassed about the incident with Tomoyo….and didn’t want Ryou to get the wrong idea about him either.
”Yeah, her sister’s wedding. It’s just been kind of vague though; we don’t even have a date or anything to tell people….”
When Ryou stated she should probably do more to help, that gave Kichiro an idea.
”Well, maybe I could come over sometime and we can work on it together?” he stated, realizing he had been rather bold to ask about coming over to her house. Where did she live anyway? Hopefully, wherever it was, Kyou would not be…no, actually, it would be better for her to be…grrr, he didn’t know if it would be better for her to be or not to be around if he was with Ryou at their house. The frustration in his mind manifested as being red faced again, just a little bit. He really need to try and relax some..
Talking about what he liked to read was a much more relaxing topic, just as he really needed one the most.
”Well, I do tend to read the newspaper in the mornings just to see what’s going on in the world…. I’ve always kind of liked the social sciences, but I’m not really sure what I want to do with it. Political science, psychology, sociology, all of it seems so interesting to me. I just like studying how people behave I guess, why they do what they do and how it affects others,” and maybe that’s why I overthink everything about how I act with people? he thought to himself, having a little laugh at the thought.
”I just realized maybe that’s why for the last few minutes I’ve pretty much analyzed every little thing we’ve done in my head. Even in a casual situation I can’t help but think like an academic. I wonder if that’s how things are for Kotomi?” he mused, thinking back to the genius friend of theirs. Maybe the source of some of his social awkwardness was the same source for her?...or maybe she really was just a bit of an airhead who just happened to be a genius?

At any point you'd like, AL, we can end this with just the two of them spending quiet time, or something. At least, I think Ryou would like that, though Ryou would like to hear more about Haru... as compared to being stuck in awkward situations with him. Vague was a bit of an understatement. "I don't really know why Fuuko-chan is staying with us..." the younger twin had admitted, further realizing just how little she knew of their precocious tenant. For some reason, she could not stay where her parents or sisters were... and her sister seemed to have mostly fished her out from staying overnight in the school. It had seemed suspicious at first, but Fuuko had been an earnest girl, and it had been easy to trust her.
She frowned about her ignorance; she wondered how much Haru knew, although he himself admitted the circumstances were nebulous... she should probably ask her sister about it, but being repetitive wasn't so bad, was it? "Has everyone figured out more about Fuuko-chan?" she asked the boy, who had been, ironically, more involved with the Fujibayashis' charge more than this certain Fujibayashi had been.
"A-about my... our house... " she stammered a bit, her thought process a little perturbed by Haru's proposition. It was feasible, a natural conclusion to come to, but the consequent situation just might be... but well, they were a couple already... this would really, really take some time to get used to... "...I mean, the house of my sister and I... I guess..." She had been about to say that she would probably ask her grandmother or her sister first, but... "It's probably okay." she decided, resolutely, nodding, a little flushed again. "I want to help Fuuko-chan too!" she exclaimed, and then giggled a bit in an embarrassed fashion.
She nodded as he turned to a topic of less awkwardness... that which Haru liked. It seemed a little foreign to her, and a part of her felt a little intimidated, wondering if she would even understand a bit of the subjects he was enumerating. Political science sounded dreadfully complicated, but psychology and sociology seemed more familiar, more interesting... though she guessed human society involved governments, as well, so it probably was part of the package deal... but it seemed really responsible for a person her age to be interested in. Ryou felt a little proud she was acquainted... though now it was not just 'acquainted' anymore... with such a guy. She did need to know more about what he was saying before she could be probably proud, though.
"So you've been studying how we act?" she said, slowly, daring a bit. Questions always helped fleshing out the things one did not know. She wondered how Haru looked at other people, the people they both knew, oneechan, herself... would he have been analyzing them? "I'm not really that familiar with those... topics, but I guess we can talk about them." she stated, nervously. "As far as I can understand, though." she continued, her smile assuming the apprehension in her voice.
A little more into the discussion, and the boy further revealed that, at the very least, the one he had been analyzing was, actually, himself. "I guess you can't help it." she offered, as a reassuring gesture. Certain habits one develop to face the world, and sometimes overly thinking was one of them. "Kotomi-chan?" she mused. "I think she might approach things in a simpler manner... I guess she just has a larger knowledge base..."
And so Fujibayashi Ryou chuckled, meekly, but joyfully, again.

So apparently Ryou was out of the loop when it came to the specifics of the uncertainty surrounding Fuko (that sounded odd..). He guessed that was a good thing; she didn’t have to worry about the possible supernatural aspects of her house guess. And it was probably not a good time to tell her about such things either; after all, Kyou, Tomoyo, and him hadn’t even confirmed the story the girl gave. The whole ‘ghost’ aspect could possibly just be a simple misunderstanding and not some supernatural mystery.
”Uhm, no, not really. We’ve tracked down her sister, but that’s about it.” he lied. He didn’t really like the idea of it, but there wasn’t any reason to give out anything more than that for now. More concerning was his asking to come over to her house. As much as they probably both didn’t like feeling awkward around each other, he had to admit it was rather fun to poke at her a little and get her all flustered. It was always so cute to watch her in this state, although he wouldn’t do it too much since he was just as susceptible to such treatment as her.
”Okay then, I guess I can come over once or so before school starts. We can just talk about it later.” he responded, offering her a way out of that conversation before moving on to discussing the usual likes and dislikes.
He was glad to see Ryou didn’t seem intimidated by some of his more esoteric taste in interests; he was afraid he was going to sound like a dreadful bore. But he was willing to learn something about astronomy, and she was willing to listen to him about social science. That sounded like a wonderful compromise, and that was how this was supposed to work, right? Of course he would make sure to try and explain what he read about in simple terms, or at least as simple as he could. He would just need her to pull him out of it every once in a while; when he got going he could easily lose himself in the topic. Apparently him and Kotomi shared more than he thought…
”Yeah, you’re probably right about her. If anything, she seems to view the world a lot more from, I guess, a child-like perspective. That, or she’s really spaced out…”
And so the night went like that, the two newly lovers simply talking and chatting together about their lives and various other things, working on trying to get a better understanding of one another. It was a simple start to the relationship (well, as simple as a weeks worth of anticipation could be), but that worked fine for them. As awkward as the two of them were, it was probably the best way to go about it
