A place long forgotten.

He raised his head to see their reactions.
He caught Okazaki's stolid looks and wondered if he was picking him apart in his mind, just as he had attempted to. Just as he had acted differently in the midst of his adored senpai, so did the so-called troublemaker. True, there had been a moment from their earlier encounter when he had been like this, when he had not been playing tricks to relieve boredom, but now he seemed like a gatekeeper. He felt like the senior had just let him pass, even if on probation.
He did not know how much Okazaki cared about Furukawa-senpai... it might seem counter-intuitive, but Ayumu would be glad if the drama club's helper was concerned about the president; that would mean he was really helping her, even if he took on this task partly and originally out of boredom, which the sophomore thought might be his motive. However, these were all merely feelings... assumptions... and he would have to wait for the facts to confirm themselves.
He was caught off-guard, however, as his upperclassman smiled, not a trickster's jeer but a sincere one. His tone was free from any sarcasm. That joy... that joy was shared by Furukawa-senpai... although it might be correct to say that Okazaki foresaw it, and it was he who shared it. She had teetered a bit, and for a moment Ayumu had moved a little forward, but he aborted the motion as soon as he saw that she had steadied herself. He could not help smiling as Furukawa declared her happiness. She was... infectious, in a positive way.
"I'm sorry it took me so long... to consider your invitation."
Ayumu, however, only held her attention for a while. The senior had quickly turned to thank her supporter. He felt forced to watch as Furukawa-senpai showered praise upon the third-year male. Of course he deserved the adulation... but that did not keep the Mizukami from being uncomfortable about it. For a bit he considered how his upperclasswoman would have been similarly delighted, even if it had not been him who had come and joined.
For most of his experiences he had been content with being a background character, at best a supporting one... but right now he felt troubled of that constant fact; now he felt constrained remaining just an observer. He fought to dispel the ugly green-eyed aching within him; he could not demean he who held her gratitude.
There were things that only the delinquent could have done... and then there were things that he could do, he hoped. He would just have to prove his worth... even if it felt like Okazaki's worth would dwarf it. He decided he should try not to think so much about it... although that was a task easier said than done. Not thinking was like trying to turn on a light and not see it.
He became silent as he watched the seniors converse, and although he tried to keep a straight face, he felt, still, like an outsider... it was like their physical distances from each other... reflected the distances of their hearts.
It almost seemed disrespectful, this intrusion of his. He nipped the bud of a frown before it had the chance to bloom starkly, to give him away to the older girl. He was probably obvious to the discerning eyes of the older boy, but he did not want the president's euphoria sullied by his selfishness.
He grasped the dango doll in his pocket, unconsciously. He stepped forward, and averted his eyes, in the pretense of looking around and finding a desk or a chair to lean on. He will ask what needs to be done... they had told him he could ask... once they seemed to done.

He wasn't interested in joining a club. He wasn't interested in drama. Yet, day by day, his integral presence in the club seemed to solidify itself. He still didn't consider himself an official member of the club and, as much as it would pain the girl to know it, he wasn't ready to make the commitment necessary to be one. He would work to help her achieve her dream...but anything past that seemed overextending. With one member now acquired, the need to join as an official member seemed slim. One more member, plus an adviser, and they were golden.
"Of course!"
He answered without hesitation.
"One more member Nagisa, that's all you need to become an official club."
His eyes were wide with energy as excitement surged from this voice to drive her to greater heights. It seemed hard to believe that this was the same girl that had struggled to walk up the hill by herself...and yet, here she was, recruiting members for her club with her own merits. His heart swelled with pride, but he was quick to quell it within reasonable bounds, as giving any credit to himself would have been wholly unfair. In truth, he had little to do with her progress. Sure, he had encouraged her forward and taught her the basics, but it was her determination and dream that had kept her going this far. To him this was all a mere distraction, but to her she was working towards her dream. Her goal. The word seemed almost foreign to him, but he couldn't deny that helping her had morphed his actions into a goal of its own. Before he had met her, he had spent everyday whittling away the time in whatever manner he could...It felt nice to finally have something to spend that time towards. It felt nice to finally have a purpose.
"Oi, Newcomer."
He half turned towards the junior, speaking to him in an off handed manner.
"The first order of business is finding another member, any ideas?"
The boy would have to go a long way to redeem his reasons for joining. He wasn't blatantly cold to the boy, but there was no sign of warmth in his eyes or expression. He was aware that Nagisa had picked up on the tension between the two, but the problem wasn't so simple that it could be dealt with with a simple apology or two. One could compare him to a threatened creature, fiercely protecting it's territory...but the metaphor would hardly accurate in this case. He didn't feel threatened, nor did he feel he had claim over Nagisa; Instead, he felt her goal was pure and whole and he refused to let miss-begotten intentions corrupt what she had. If the boy could be of help he might earn his respect, if not...he didn't want to think of the alternative.

"The first order of business is finding another member, any ideas?"
She was rather curious of that herself, just who else could she possibly convince to join the club? Well, not convince entirely.. she wanted people to join because they wanted to, not because someone had enticed them with some sort of reward or guilt-trip. Things were looking up though, going better then she expected even though time was somewhat of an issue considering how close the Founder's festival was arriving. Just three days.. three short days, oh goodness how the panic began to try settling in already. But she shook her head faintly, she was determined to work hard and ensure everything managed to work out in the end. Both her and Tomoya didn't spend all this time for nothing.
Though just what had Tomoya been doing this all for, she wondered? He himself stated he had no intention of becoming a member of the club. She assumed he was only being friendly to her but.. still couldn't exactly understand why. Why her? Why not someone whom he at least knew existed prior to her -- and why was she suddenly so focused on the thought? It's not like she was worried about his opinion of her.. at least that's what she told herself. She tried to get her thoughts off of Tomoya and back to the matters at hand.
"Hmm.. Okazaki. I know you don't plan to become a member, but.. what about your friend? Sunohara? He seems like he could use an outlet for all the energy he has."
She thought the blonde boy seemed rather lively, almost wired, whenever she'd seen him around. Whether it be with Okazaki or simply causing more trouble with Tomoyo. His devotion was something to be admired, though it only went so far until becoming blatant stubbornness. Still, maybe his spirit would be enough to keep her cheered up? There wasn't nearly enough smiles around with just Tomoya, she thought of it as unhealthy to have such a vacant look all the time like he did.
That stone-cold gaze he could give, something tainted with bitterness and reluctance to display true feeling, he'd make a great villain in a play! She almost giggled at the thought, she pondered on what sort of outfits she could put him in. Something dark and shadowy? Perhaps something a bit more casual to keep a sort of calm and cool composure despite his evil nature? Or something plainly silly for comic relief -- or perhaps a twisted, sinister form of humor could be perceived from the odd attire. There was so many things she could do, so many ideas within her head that she wouldn't get to try out.
Plays.. she still needed to prepare for the festival! She couldn't do a thing without the club being made official however, and just like that worry took over once more for how little time was left in their grasp. She only hoped she wouldn't begin counting the seconds themselves as they edged further and further to the deadline.
"I know it may seem like a weird choice, but.. I think he can really do well if he tried, plus we don't have much time left to search."

I promise, I will help her...
He was, again, included. The lonely seconds had passed.
He tried his best to dispel the tension on his side, although he recognized that willing it completely away was impossible. He cared for Furukawa-senpai, and he knew that Okazaki-senpai cared for the president, too, but he felt he was not a good enough judge of character to measure the similarities and differences of their respective, nebulous 'cares'.
There was no disdain in the regard of the so-called delinquent... there was no favor, either... and he surmised, although he was not completely sure, that his predecessor was doubtful of him... because he cared. That he appreciated.
He returned his stare, for a bit.
He had been the first to doubt himself; if it would be too much, if it would be oppressive, destructive... these dual-natured feelings of his. Possessive and protective; selfish and selfless; burning and warm, a paradox and a truth. With the same thought that he wanted her to smile he wanted that smile for himself... no matter how much he tried to deny... and sometimes he felt he could dislike himself.
If Okazaki would be guarded about him, he would be twice-guarded. About himself.
...I promise, I will do nothing to harm her.
-------------
And then time continued, his little unspoken pact, with himself and the unaware Okazaki, tucked into the recesses of his mind, his reverie dissolving; the moment for greetings and considerations had passed, and now was the moment for plans and action. He heard the male senior's remark, and managed to half-disregard the manner it was delivered.
"The first order of business is finding another member, any ideas?"
He was emboldened by the chance to participate, and disheartened in that his answer would be lacking. Finding another member would be hard... the most he could think of would be asking his acquaintances if they would be interested, and then just inviting them would not assure that they would actually join. He did not fancy himself as a persuasive advertiser, either... if his two upperclassmen did not have much success, he doubted he could do better.
Before he could formulate how to say all this (and already feeling guilty that he was not capable of doing much for the club at this moment, in this capacity), Furukawa-senpai spoke up.
"Hmm.. Okazaki. I know you don't plan to become a member, but.. what about your friend? Sunohara? He seems like he could use an outlet for all the energy he has."
He was partly startled by this statement of hers. "I... thought Sunohara-senpai..." he trailed off, letting the sentence complete itself. He had assumed that the bright-haired senpai had been helping with the club, already; it would seem he was mistaken, so it would mean that they still needed two members, instead of one, to be, well, official. What's more, it seemed Okazaki-senpai did not have plans of staying... how... strange. (He decided not to comment on that particular detail, in the meantime.)
With the president finishing her suggestion he decided he was free to speak (he hoped his slight outburst earlier was excusable); he still needed to pitch in. "I could ask some of my... friends..." he remarked, "...if they would be interested."
He began to enumerate in his mind who he could probably entreat... he wondered if Koji-senpai would be available, considering his senior status (as Furukawa-senpai and Okazaki-senpai seemed to be the exception to the rule of seniors being busy for college entrance exams...); if Narukami had a club... Fuukami and Aizawa-san would probably be wrapped up with their skating things... and he wondered how they would react... how they would respond.
The task was beginning to loom herculean, but he had promised.
And he had promised himself he would keep his promises.
