The Big Starfish Family

Ibuki Fuko ___________________________________________________________________________ The reference room was silent and empty, except for the small sound of a blade scraping wood. As what had become a usual habit for her, Fuko was carving her starfish. Sometimes that sadly non-magical girl would come in and cook up some rice for her, but she hadn’t been around lately. It didn’t bother Fuko though; she was used to being alone at this point. Besides, without the distraction of food, she could focus completely on the task at hand; she just ‘borrowed’ some food from another student when they were hungry. That or she took advantage of the food supplies the girl had in here to feed her. Since those supplies were getting low, however, Fuko was starting to rationing them.
What she wasn’t rationing, however, was paint. Fuko loved the girl’s suggestion to paint the starfish to increase the cuteness potential. Orange, however, had been starting to get a little boring, so Fuko had confiscated a few other colors as well. In front of her at the moment was a whole rainbow’s worth of color; red, orange, yellow, pink, purple, and gold. To enhance the experience even further, she had been adding in some faces to them, with some slight blushing on a few as well. Hmm, odd, that sounded familiar didn’t it. Fuko didn’t know why, but she had the nagging feeling she had seen such a design scheme before. She eventually shrugged it off though; this was her Big Starfish Family after all; worrying about something trivial was a waste of time.
”There, a whole new member is added! You are the cutest one yet!” Fuko cheered as she added the finishing touches on the newest starfish. It was a blue one (boys like blue, right?), but even then she couldn’t help but add some blushing to it. Setting it down next to the pink one she just did, Fuko couldn’t help but be reminded of, well, she didn’t know what it was. However, something about those two together just looked right, like they were meant too be.
Now she remembered what that was bringing up; her sister’s wedding. In all the fun of painting and carving starfish Fuko had almost forgotten her purpose; to give them out to people in hopes they would come to the wedding. The Founder’s Festival had been a small success, but not the massive crowd she had hoped. This time, however, there was no escaping Fuko; every student was going to be hunted down and ‘starfished’. With weapons these adorable no one could resist; they would all bow down before the starfish…and hopefully they would come to the wedding. Speaking of which, Fuko still had no clue when it was; hopefully someone who knew her sister would know when it was. That is an important piece of information apparently; everyone she asked wanted to know.
There was no time to worry about that though; now was carving time. Her stock of starfish needed replenishing after all. With a cheerful singing song, Fuko got right back to work.
”Starfish, Starfish, Starfish, Starfish, Starfish Daikazoku…”

Ibuki Fuko ___________________________________________________________________________ Well, there was another starfish down. This was the tenth one today; her stock was starting to fill up pretty well. She was a one-girl starfish-factory! Placing it on the windowsill to dry with all the other starfish, Fuko decided to sit back and relax for a bit. After making all those wonderfully cute creations she deserved at least a small break. That, and she was running out of paint. Later on she was going to have to run by the art room and borrow some, though of course she would return the empty paint cans. Hopefully nobody would mind if she did that, right? And if they did, she would just give them one of her starfish; that would calm anybody down.
Leaning back in her chair, Fuko tapped her foot on the ground, not really sure what to do know. No paint meant no starfish, and the other starfish were still drying; they wouldn’t be ready for awhile. The room was empty as well, which meant no one to talk too either, or to give them starfish. It was going to be awhile before lunchtime, so that meant no one would be wandering the halls. That just left her alone in this big school all by herself, with nothing else to do. Maybe she could take a shot at cooking that rice that girl made the last time she was here?
Getting up, Fuko headed over to the counter and began opening every cupboard that was there. Eventually she stumbled upon a hot plate, a small pot, and a box of rice. Excellent! Taking everything out, Fuko found an empty spot on the counter and set it all down. Now how was she supposed to make the rice again? Remembering the girl had filled the pot with a small bit of water, Fuko used the small sink to do just that. Then, pouring all the rice into the pot, Fuko set it on the hot plate. Staring at it intently, she waited for it to cook…nothing happened. Confused, Fuko looked at the box again; she had followed all the instructions on it, so why wasn’t it cooking? There was water, there was right, she turned the knob on the hot plate to the right temperature. Maybe she was just being impatient?
Shrugging her shoulders, Fuko decided to just leave it there for awhile and see if anything happens (not noticing it wasn’t plugged in). Looking over at all the books, Fuko decided to see if there was anything good there. Maybe there was something about starfish! The hope of finding such a book drove Fuko onward, and she began searching furiously through the shelves. Hopefully, by the time she found a book she wanted to read, the rice would be done. Then she could enjoy a delicious lunch while reading about the love of her life; starfish. ___________________________________________________________________________

Daniel turned at the stairwell and sighed in defeat. This school is so much bigger than my last one, it's hopeless to try to figure out where I'm at. Easier to just find somebody and ask for help. Daniel turned and looked around to find that he was standing in the hallway by himself. "Of course," he muttered to himself. "Murphy's Law at its finest..." He turned one more time, but heard no footsteps or any other noise at all. Darn new schools! All of them!
Just because their was no noise in the halls, didn't mean that there wouldn't be anybody in any of the rooms. Dan shrugged and made his way to the first door on his left. He closed the distance between him and the door in three long strides and opened the door and entered. The room was...smelly. The smell of drying paint was the first thing that Daniel noticed. An art closet or something, probably, he thought until he noticed that the room was full of books too. Curious he stepped into the room and took a look at the nearest book. Reading kanji often gave him a headache, but Daniel was able to figure out the book he was looking at had absolutely nothing to do with art. Or with paint drying.
He looked over towards the room's window and did a double-take. S-starfish? What in the world is going on here? For a few moments he hesitated in the doorway, looking at what appeared to be the newest painted in a whole row of carved and painted starfish. The blue one on the end looked like it was wet.
As curiosity began to slowly trickle into the back of Daniel's mind, he took a step forward towards the starfish, unaware that the room was occupied by someone else. "A carved starfish," he said softly. "Huh." He took a step closer, thinking maybe that he could pick up one of the drier starfish and check it out. Maybe it had the artist's initials on it or something. Even if it didn't it wouldn't hurt anything, nothing at all. Well, maybe the paint smell would offend Dan's nose a few more minutes, but really that was all...

Ibuki Fuko ___________________________________________________________________________ As Fuko searched through the shelves, her mood began to depress. So far there wasn’t any books on starfish. There were books on fortune-telling, spells, and a whole lot of other stuff that she really didn’t care that much about. The closest thing to starfish was the book on sea-life, but it was all fish. She didn’t want fish; she wanted starfish. One would have thought an entire room filled with books would have had something with starfish. This library was deficient; she was going to have to go to the larger one later and see if she could find one. If that bigger one didn’t, this was a very sad school indeed.
Standing up and sighing, Fuko twitched when she heard the door opened. Not knowing who it was, Fuko hid behind one of the book cases and watched as a boy entered the room. She glared at him intently, hoping that by being stared at he would get nervous and eventually run off. Then he would spread the rumor of the Reference Room Ghost, and no one would bother her again while she made his starfish. Her plan, however, failed, and the boy continued making his way throughout the room. One thing was odd though; he seemed to have no clue what was going on.
Fuko kept an eye on him, but began to feel angry when he went towards her starfish. She let out a small growl. Those where her starfish; she was supposed to give them out. Yet here he was looking and picking them up without permission…that was it! He was here to steal her starfish and then possibly snack on the rice she was cooking (it had to be done now, right?). Well, no one was going to steal her starfish as long as she was around. This boy will pay for trying to do so a thing.
”Get away from my starfish!” She yelled out, with some nervousness and rush to the tone. Without even giving him the chance to react, Fuko ran towards the boy.
Before she even made it a foot, however, she tripped up on the cord to the small TV that was in the room. She found herself falling on the floor, though luckily her face didn’t hit anything. Still, this was rather embarassing. Operation Starfish Rescue had failed before it even begun, and she fell in front of the culprit. Now he was going to laugh at her and run off with her beautiful and adorable starfish. He’d probably sell them for his own gain and take claim for it.
”Puhi…” she mumbled off, a completely random noise she would make sometimes. ___________________________________________________________________________

Whatever Dan could have possibly expected to happen next didn't. Instead he found that he had not been alone in the room after all and the strange artist was still in the room--behind him no less! "Stay away from my starfish!" came the cry from somewhere behind him, and in one of Daniel's least graceful moments managed to somehow simultaneously jump, turn, and dive out of the way in one motion, accidentally knocking over a stack of old books on one of the reference library's tables.
"Uwaagh!" To total it all off, as he was trying to stumble away from the table he'd knocked the books off of he'd ended up tripping over his own two feet and fell amongst the books he had accidentally scattered. Well, this was definitely not Dan's day for having things go his way.
From where he had made his undignified landing he saw he hadn't been the only one to have a bout of bad luck on the way down. No more than half a dozen feet from where he had landed was a girl wearing the same uniform as him, but with a few minor differences, sprawled out from where she had apparently tripped on a cord to a small TV in the room.
"Ah! I'm sorry, I didn't know that anybody was in here! I-I'm lost, and I thought I could get some directions, and well you spooked me and--" Dan shook himself slightly. This girl was absolutely tiny. He guessed that she was probably the shortest person that he'd seen in school this far. Not only that, she looked like a member of the freshman class. Dan himself was a senior and he wondered for a moment at why he had felt the need to start babbling an apology. Theoretically because he was several grades higher then she should be giving him the apology! What was a girl doing all alone in some dark corner of the reference library making painted starfish during a school day anyways?
"I'm sorry. I guess we both gave each other a bit of a fright. I'm Daniel Stryker from class 3-C. Who are you?" Dan was, if nothing else, always mindful of his manners.

"Oh."
Mizukami Ayumu was in a strolling mood.
This was the old building. There were two reasons why he was walking here: one, he was trying to get the feel of the place, since, well, the drama clubroom was here, and he shouldn't get lost every time he tried to go to Furukawa-senpai's club. No, he did not just giggle. Not even in his mind. No, he is not in denial. He's being discreet.
Two, was that he was actually aiming for the reference room. The reference room was the old library, just like this building was the old building; and even probably the adjectives 'stinky, gruesome, haunted...' and any more unpleasant adjectives you could come up with would only make Ayumu go 'huh?' and then 'well, it's a library' and 'I could probably borrow a book and then leave'.
After all, libraries were the country of books, where they sat resplendent in their shelf-hovels. Not to mention Mizukami Ayumu had never seen the reference room before. He wanted to get first times off his record, immediately, before they exploded in his face. So, we have the motivation, although since he wanders off in his free time, he probably didn't even need a reason to drop by.
"Oh." he said, and no, he didn't intentionally repeat the uttering. He had come through the door. The smell of paint, Ayumu noted, was both a punch to the nose and addictive. Like whiteboard markers but even more aggressive. Well, that was not what extracted the second 'Oh', that was what extracted the first one.
The second 'Oh' was for the general mess. He didn't really expect the reference room to be completely maintained, but he definitely didn't expect shelves upturned, and... were there two people there? One was a boy he didn't know, and another... well, most people would be generalizing a fight or something between two people, but Ayumu's brain was wired slightly differently. Besides...
"It's the strange girl." he said, without thinking. Oh, whatever, it was a library anyway. He made for one of the still-standing shelves, then seemed to realize something, midstride. "You guys need help?" Well, they were picking themselves up already. "Never mind." He started checking the bookshelf and the titles of the books that had their titles on their spines, as if it was perfectly usual to find this situation. He'll probably deal with them later... if they want to deal with him.

Ibuki Fuko ___________________________________________________________________________ The entire room was a mess! The boy had knocked over a shelf in the confusion, leaving plenty of junk and books everywhere. There was one about starfish! How did she miss that? Now she felt rather sad, but there wasn’t time to deal with that. Instead, there was the starfish-thief that she had to deal with. Now that he was down and out with books on him, it was time for her to strike. Pushing herself up, she started to sneak towards him, but was soon startled as the boy began to talk again.
He didn’t know anyone was in here and just wanted directions. Likely story. From the looks of his clothes he was a senior, and there was something strange about him, like he wasn’t originally from here. If that was the case he could have been looking for directions, but why had he shown interest in her starfish…or walk into what was normally considered an abandoned room. No, there had to be some kind of insidious plot behind his coming in here. Shifting around, she made her way over to her starfish to protect them.
”Admit it, you just wanted to take some of my ultra adorable starfish without asking? I have a very special reason for them so no one is stealing them with me around.” she replied as she pulled out her wooden non-painted starfish and held it in front of her like a shield.
At that time Fuko heard another person had entered the room, but had been too quiet to actually be noticed. The person was familiar, but Fuko couldn’t place her finger on it. Either way, she knew he was somewhat trustworthy, so he could help her protect her starfish from this evil senior trying to steal her starfish.
”You there, strange person, help defend my starfish from this Thief!” she yelled out defiantly, keeping a weary eye on this boy. No one was getting these starfish without her permission…though maybe there was a way to work all of this out. Looking down at her starfish, she looked back up at the senior with a smile.
”Though I do know a way you can get out of this. Are you familiar with Hitode Daikazoku, or it’s knock off Dango Daikazoku?” she asked him, wondering if he would have heard of it. Everyone had heard of Dango Daikazoku, but no one was familiar with Hitode Daikazoku. Fuko would admit, however, that Dango were just as adorable as Starfish so she held no ill will against them. Still, it was odd she could never find a record of Hitode Daikazoku. The poor Starfish Family, never getting the recognition it deserved.
”I will be willing to forgive you if you join me in singing a verse of it! You too,” she said, pointing at the new person who had entered the room. ___________________________________________________________________________

Dan looked towards the door as someone new came in through the doorway. Oh, man, he thought, I look like a total klutz...at least its nobody that I recognize from class... Dan stood up and brushed himself off, then tried to extend a hand to help the freshman that had startled him up, but she was already on her feet and accusing him of trying to steal the starfish drying.
"N-no I didn't! I was lost...all I was trying to do is to find out where I am!" This strange girl for whatever reason flustered Dan like nothing else, something in the way she acted just perpeptually took him off guard. Though he didn't exactly have an accurate frame of reference, having met her little under a minute before.
"I'm not a thief! I was just looking at them!" Dan tried to keep his voice level. What was it about this kid? Dan could probably hoist her up one handed--she was tiny! He knew that no matter what happened though, he wouldn't. It just wasn't worth it.
The new guy that she was talking to looked almost as odd as the girl that kept accusing him of stealing her hand-carved starfish. He came in, said a few words, then went to re-shelving the books. Maybe he was a librarian? Daniel sighed. Whether that guy was a librarian or not, he was sure more familiar with the school than he himself was, and since it looked like he'd be getting nowhere with the freshman girl, maybe he could get some directions out of this new fellow.
"Hey could you--what?" Daniel's question was interrupted by a question from the freshman. Daniel was confused. The what of what? He'd never heard of these things... he was so confused. "I'm sorry, what? I...haven't heard of either of those. I'm a foreign student... Should...I know these...?"

Oh, so he was a strange person, too. Well, strange persons must find normal persons strange... although there is a possibility that they find strange people strange as well. It was one of those strange rules of strangeness. These were some of the topics that the thoughts of Ayumu weaved about, percolating in his brain as he detached himself, for a moment, from the general racket that arose when this girl was concerned.
What was her name again? Fu-- something. Had to do something with wind, or sky... he was actually here for a book on a bit of Japanese etymology, since, well, the etymology dictionary things in the normal library were a bit... normal. He was good enough writing in English, and in his mother's language, but he was still getting confused with the whole lot of kanji and their varying pronunciations depending on context. Maybe he could have dared to ask the older Fujibayashi... he had heard that that senpai of his liked to hurl dictionaries around. Not that he'd met her already... but maybe he can pick up the dictionary after the ensuing destruction... he grinned a bit. No, it wasn't in this shelf.
Passing after his little scan of the shelf-- it was just a scan, so he could have missed it, so he might check it again later, the cool second-year shifted again into view, becoming a not-so-invisible spectator in the confrontation between the strange girl and the tall... guy. He was tall. Well, most people were taller than him, but he was tall, really tall, and there was something foreign with him. He got away with being slightly foreign because his foreign... ness came from somewhere in Asia, too... or at least he thought he got away with it. He went from scanning shelves to scanning the situation. It might be worth it... to play with this scenario... a while.
"I don't think he's a thief..." he muttered, in that lazy voice that only lost its languor when he was really pumped up by something truly wonderful, or when he was with Furukawa-senpai... which was truly, distinctively wonderful... okay. His eyes shifted from the other male student... he must be new here, he surmised... and the passionate, even misunderstanding sculptor. He didn't know if he would get through this nutcase of a scamperer, but well, he was... half-trying. "Besides, I don't think you'll be able to get people to accept those if you accuse them of being thieves..." The pronunciation was slow and drawn out, a substantial drawl. Mizukami Ayumu wondered at how his statement made sense. It made sense. Wow. Perhaps he wasn't such a nutcase as he thought, or as the girl prescribed.
"I noticed." he said to the stranger, when he made the comment about being a foreigner. "Well, congratulations on meeting... Starfish girl. One of the prime tourist spots here in Hikarizaka." he added, drily. The enthusiasm of Starfish girl was making him a little more talkative than usual. He made no effort to hide his comments from their subject... Miss Fu-something.
He smiled, trying to be reassuring, although he wasn't exactly a master of that. Furukawa-senpai was a master at that... "My name is Mizukami." he said, referring to his surname. "You are?" he asked. The foreign student probably was being confused by this fickle artist of wooden echinoderms. That sounded nice. Fickle artist of wooden echinoderms...
He ignored the little girl for a pause, and then continued. "Isn't Hitode Daikazoku something of a rip-off?" he openly wondered.

Ibuki Fuko ___________________________________________________________________________ Fuko soon found herself being assaulted by both the ‘thief’ and ‘strange person’. Both of them were defensive about her accusation of him being a thief. He said that he was trying to find out where he was, and the other person was just lazily interjecting into the conversation. Fuko’s head just kept going back between them. Her entire view of the situation was starting to fall now. He actually had a reason for being in here, and her will was failing in front of the attacks on her view. Plus, the strange person had a point. If she wanted to get people to take her starfish, she had to be a little less protective. Still, he was touching them without her permission!
”Oooooh,” she mumbled off to herself, not really sure what it was she should be doing now. She brought her starfish closer to her touch, using it to comfort herself in this time of duress.
Lost and confused, Fuko simply stood back as the two of them chatted about being foreigners. Apparently this person was not from Japan; Fuko thought he was weird. Fuko was never wrong about this sort of thing. Though who was this starfish girl that the other person was talking about? If she was a prime tourist spot, Fuko was sure she should have heard of her. After all, Fuko was an expert on everything starfish related. If there really was a starfish girl in this town, then Fuko had to track her down when she got the chance. Just the idea of a thing was…so…adorable.
Fuko soon fell into a trance of sort, with a delightful grin. Her mind was wandering into a world filled with starfish girls and boys. They were laughing and singing and dancing all around in joy. There were starfish candies and foods galore. It never occurred to her she was the starfish girl; she had taken the term way too literally. Still, she was happy, and would have been stuck in that trance until she heard “Isn’t Hitode Daikazoku something of a rip-off?” Fuko snapped out at the word of it, and then gave the boy an evil glare.
”It isn’t a rip-off! It is an improvement. Dango are cute, but starfish are infinitely more times cute than dango. Therefore, Hitode Daikazoku is an improvement on something already fantastic.”
With a rather adorable amount of content, Fuko turned away from the kid in a huff before remembering she still had to deal with the “thief-who-wasn’t-a-thief.” Glancing over at him, Fuko looked down remorsefully. She didn’t mean to be so mean to him; she just didn’t want anyone taking her starfish. They were gifts for people in hopes of getting them to congratulate her sister after all. If anyone stole them, well, Fuko didn’t know what she would do then. First, however, she probably needed to apologize.
”Fuko is sorry for accusing you of thieving. These starfish are very important to me so I have to protect them. If you want, though, you can have one. In return, please congratulate Fuko’s sister on her wedding day!” ___________________________________________________________________________

Dan looked between the Fuko and Mizukami. He turned to Ayumu and nodded his thanks. "Yeah, I really wasn't going to steal them. Thanks." He turned to point out this again to Fuko, but found her holding her starfish and smiling in a way that frankly confused him. He turned to Mizukami. "Does...'Starish Girl'...always do this?"
He turned to look back at the entranced Fuko and contemplated waving his hand back and forth in front of her eyes to see if she was even aware of her surroundings any more. When Mizukami introduced himself, Dan turned back to him, and remembered the proper etiquette for introducing myself. "Oh. My name is Dan. My last name is somewhat hard to pronounce. Nice to meet you." He looked at Fuko, then back to Mizukami. "Mizukami-san, her real name isn't 'Starfish Girl'...is it?"
When Mizukami mentioned this "Hitode Daikazoku" being a rip-off, the girl snapped back to reality and went off. Note to self, avoid belittling starfish around Starfish Girl. Dan had to admit that this girl was definitely "off." But then, he was usually in that group himself due to his height and status as a foreign student. When she began to apologize, Dan managed to figure out that "Starfish Girl's" real name was Fuko.
"No...that's okay. I'm sorry for trying to pick one up without asking you first. And spooking you." Dan sighed, this situation looked salvageable enough now, but he still didn't have any possible inkling of where in the school he was. When Fuko asked him to take a starfish, he hesitated for a moment. Should I take it? Dan wondered. But if I don't i'll look like a jerk. I really don't have any space for any new stuff on the next move...but, she's...awww, why not?
"Th-thanks. I'll just take one of the dry ones then?" Dan turned to Fuko. "So, Fuko-chan, did I get that right? Congratulations to your sister getting married. Does she teach here?"

Mizukami eyed the strange girl as she went into her trance, after listening a bit to their exchange, he, the 'strange person', and Dan, the 'thief'. He wondered what trigger the semi-conscious state of Starfish girl... it seemed that Ayumu was in a trance himself, as he reached his hand forward, in a little blatant attempt to touch the sculptor girl's nose. He promptly whipped his hand away when the girl landed back to reality, and he shot a glance at the other male, a glance that said, 'I wasn't doing anything', in that obviously lying manner.
Her speech had revealed, as was typical of her third-person statements, that her name was Fuko. Perhaps he will remember it... and perhaps he will not. Oh well. He could just pick it out while having a conversation with her, anyway. Fuko... Wind girl, wind child. Well, that was what he assumed her name meant. She seemed very much like it. The boy acted like he had not attempted to... pinch the freshman's nose, and kept his silence as he took in his two companions' reactions to his... actions.
"Sort of." He had only seen her once, during a festival of sorts in school. He had gotten himself a starfish that time, too. He wasn't all too sure about the details, but he'd been a little caught off guard that time. Well, he'd pretty much saw Fuko's antics coming, this time. That trance... it intrigued him, as much as he was intrigued by a certain senpai's virtual immortality, and another senpai's dictionary throwing prowess... there were a lot of amazing people in this school, and he had yet to know them. Of course, Ayumu's definition of amazing was a little... relative.
"Nice to meet you, Dan-san." he said. He was definitely not a native Japanese, but his handle of the language was good. Maybe even better than Mizukami Ayumu's, he chided himself. He wondered if he should ask him about his hard-to-pronounce name. He didn't bother to answer what Fuko's name was, because the guy obviously already picked it up from Fuko-san's speech, as well. "She's spooky enough." he muttered, out of nowhere, as Dan apologized to Fuko. Now, where was he... apparently he was looking for something here... but perhaps he'll play with these people a little longer.
He honestly thought that the Dango were cuter, but who cares... he wasn't in the mood to margue. He let the topic rest. His sleepy-looking eyes darted to another shelf, and then back to the pair. One so tall, another so short. It was a nice contrast. As Dan mentioned about Fuko's sister, Ayumu wondered why he did not ask about that before...

Ibuki Fuko ___________________________________________________________________________ As Fuko lingered in her magical land filled with starfish, she had a strange feeling that something was wrong. Her mind was telling her there was danger ahead threatening her. All she could hear, however, was the faint noise of those two boys talking again about something. She didn’t know what though. Still, she had a feeling something dangerous was a foot, but when she heard about the Hitode Daikazoku being a rip off, she was back to reality. Oddly enough, when she did that, the feeling of danger went away. She must have been imagining it or something. Still, she held her starfish a little closer to her, just in case. No one was going to hurt her or her starfish if she could have say in it.
The boy, who she gathered was named Dan for some odd reason….where had she heard that? Was it in her little dream? Eh, it wasn’t important. What was important was that the boy had apologized for his actions in trying to take her starfish. While she didn’t want to forgive him, remembering that she was trying to be ‘mature’ about it, and not scare off potential congratulaters, she had to consent to forgive him. To make it official, she made a motion with her starfish that would have probably reminded someone of a Catholic priest. She had seen it on TV before; they always made a cross or something when they forgave someone.
”Fuko officially forgive you for trying to steal the starfish.” she said in an ‘official’ tone to sound important.
To seal the deal, she offered him one of her starfish, with all that applied with it. Taking one of her starfish was an unbreakable contract promising to congratulate her sister. That was why they were so important to her. It was all she could do for her sister after all. Fuko had a feeling something was wrong with her sister, but wasn’t sure. That was why it was so important for her to do this, to make sure her sister was happy on her wedding day. All the students in the school attending the wedding; that was to be Fuko’s wedding gift for her sister. However, the boy didn’t seem to know this part of the story, and so he asked for more information.
”Fuko’s sister was an art teacher here at the school. She would be so happy to see all the students attending her wedding, and so Fuko is hoping to use the unstoppable adorableness of starfish to draw students to the wedding.” she replied in an actual serious tone. If there was one thing she took serious, it was this. Of course, she took everything /I] serious; it was just this was the most serious of all serious things that ever existed in seriousness.
At that point Fuko remembered the presence of the other boy. She had a feeling he had been saying something, but she didn’t know what. Did he want a starfish as well? Fuko couldn’t remember if she had already given him one. It wouldn’t hurt to give him another. Besides, these were new and improved starfish; they were painted! So he would now have double, no, triple the cuteness at his finger tips. Could he handle such a power though?
”You there, uhm, Mysterious Acquaintance of Dan!,” Fuko said, pointing at Mizukami,”Now that you have heard Fuko’s story, would you like to accept a starfish as well?” ___________________________________________________________________________

Dan looked back at Fuko and shook his head slightly. The girl was definitely not a typical freshman, that was for sure. Daniel sighed. Well, this had been a intriguing experience, but he still didn't really have any idea of where he was in the school. He was going to end up late for classes at this rate, though really it wasn't any fault of his own. For that matter, Mizukami seemed like he might be a bit of an oddball himself.
"Okay, well...all's forgiven I guess." Dan supressed a minor urge to snicker when Fuko apparently crossed him with the starfish. She looked absolutely serious, and Dan had to admit that she kept the act up pretty good.
"You're doing a whole bunch for your sister, aren't you, Fuko-san? I can't really say I understand all, since I don't have any siblings myself, but I suppose it makes a bit of sense." Dan listened as Fuko continued on about the wedding.
She...she's completely serious about everything, isn't she? Dan scratched half-heartedly at the back of his head. "Y'know, I don't want to rain on your parade, but...how? You'd have to be working day and night to get enough starfish for everyone in the school...You'd burn out after a couple of days of that."
Dan held the starfish in one hand and looked at it, hand-carved out of a block of wood and hand-painted...pink. Dan supressed the urge to smack his face into his palm and instead looked back at Fuko.
"I don't mean to be rude Fuko-san, but when is the wedding even? If its only in a couple of days, you'll be hardpressed to get the news out by yourself...unless you already have and I'm just babbling for no reason..."

"Adorableness..." he mumbled.
There wasn't much he could say. He settled for one of his smiles; the girl had the strangest notions, though different enough from Ayumu's that he could consider them strange. He had not managed to hear certain things that Fuuko were spouting right now, mainly because he didn't ask. It didn't occur him that much to ask. Or maybe she said them, but he was not paying attention.
He scratched his head, engaging in dialogue with himself. The girl, and not her starfishes, were that which were adorable, though such adorability... adorableness... whatever... was often countered by that sharp randomness with which she conducted herself.
Indeed, there wasn't much he could say. Right now, it was a conversation between Dan and Fuuko; the mysterious acquaintance of Dan was content to watch the events play through. Dan was asking her the details; again, it seemed it did not occur to him to fish for these kinds of details. What struck him... there was something that struck him about Fuuko the first time they met... that she was not supposed to be here. "Starfish ghost..." he mumbled yet again, at the risk of appearing stranger than the freshman.
He took the proffered sculpture; maybe he could find a use for it. Maybe it would mean he would have to work twice as hard or something. He had declined to say anything, apart from the comments that made their way out his mouth; he was content to listen. Dan's asking had made him see certain angles, besides making him curious; he wondered what Fuuko would say. He was really weak with... practical stuff.
He drifted towards the counter, at a whim to move. Ayumu was prone to certain bouts of restlessness; sometimes, although he didn't make a lot of noise about it, he moves from one place to another and back again, even if without reason. Who knows what he will do when he becomes an expecting father.
In any case, this little movement of his, besides possibly triggering Fuuko's paranoia again, made him notice the small pot on top of a simple sort of stove. It seemed the little ruckus that Dan created in his entrance had no ill effect to the table and its residents. The knob was turned on... but the plug wasn't in the socket. He wondered what it could mean. Not wishing to barge into Dan and Fuuko's conversation, and hopefully not arousing the girl's suspicion, he approached the strange set-up.
