A Bit Of Advice

Date: April 26, 2003 Saturday Time: 12:00 PM Great, the situation with Ryou had gone from a normally awkward crushing phase to what he felt like had to be critical mass. Pushed by Kotomi's innocent remakrs, he had confessed his love...or at least asked her out. He really wasn't sure if he 'loved' Ryou or anything like that, but he felt like he should at least give a relationship with her a chance. After all, he felt like there was something there, even if he couldn't really describe what it was he felt in regards to her. At the least, he had hoped to clear things out by asking her out, getting a definitive answer and all that to put it at rest. Instead, he got a vague answer, with a straight answer hanging in the future at some undefined time. Now he was even more frustrated with it all.
And with that in mind, he figured he might as well talk to someone, maybe get some advice. With his small group of friends, that didn't leave a lot of choices of who to turn to. Ryou was obviously out, and he wasn't sure he wanted to know how Fuko would react. Kyou, being Ryou's sister could have possibly been a source of information. But at the same time Kyou being Kyou meant, well, he wasn't sure he wanted to deal with that either. Either she would get overprotective, or she would get schemy, and neither was something he was wanting to deal with as both options were rather unwelcoming. That left only one other choice, and probably the sanest choice: Tomoyo.
The question then was exactly how to address her about it. He had thought about doing it at school, but that risked Ryou or Kyou showing up and ruining things, and she was always busy at school anyway (that, and being a second year made it a bit harder to meet up with her). That left trying and getting to her after school or maybe on the weekend. With the Fuko situation he had gotten her number (in case any of them found new information or something happens) so he gave her a call at home, hoping maybe to meet up with her to talk. He just hope he didn't give her family the wrong idea...
So here he was, in front of a small cafe/diner place he had found out about when he found himself having lunch with Kotomi. It seemed a decent enough place, and cheap enough he could pay for Tomoyo to get something to eat or drink. After all, he was calling her out here to listen to him about Ryou; the most he could do for her was to compensate her for it. For now, however, all he could do was wait outside for her and work out how to say what he had to say. [/blockquote]

Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
She saw him standing there, patiently waiting outside the cafe.
He called her the day before. Tomoyo was surprised to hear Kichiro’s voice over the phone. At first, she thought he was calling because something new had popped up concerning Fuko, but that wasn’t the case. Kichiro wanted to meet up with her to discuss something else. It wasn’t that unusual for her to receive phone calls, but it was a little more unusual that she was going out on the weekend with a friend from school. Thankfully, her family hadn’t asked her many questions about it.
When Tomoyo had given him her phone number, she didn’t intend for it to be used as a means of asking her out... although, she somehow doubted that was Kichiro’s intention anyway. He said he needed help with something. That in itself didn’t seem like an invitation to “go out.” She wasn’t sure why they weren’t going to talk about it over the phone, but regardless, she agreed to meet up with him at the cafe. He was a friend, and what kind of a person would she be if she declined to help him?
She waved her hand and smiled as she walked toward him. “Hey, how are you doing?” she greeted Kichiro, “I hope you weren’t waiting for too long.”
This was actually the first time she’d seen him outside of a school setting. The casual red t-shirt that Kichiro had on was a good and reassuring sign that this wasn’t supposed to be a date. As for Tomoyo, she was dressed in a light floral skirt and a white blouse – feminine and pretty, but not too dressy. It was appropriate for the situation. “So, what is it you wanted to talk about? Let’s talk about it at a table,” Tomoyo suggested, holding open the door for her friend. She brought her own money, not wanting Kichiro to have to pay for her. This wasn’t a date after all, but knowing Kichiro, he’d probably be polite enough to pay despite the fact. [/blockquote]

It didn't take too long before Tomoyo showed up, acting polite and happy enough to show she wasn't being bothered about coming out here to talk with him. As for her outfit, well, he could see why other guys (minus her reputation....and even then) would be interested in her. It was at least feminine, which was what she was wanting to be more right? Now he felt like he was a little underdressed compared to her, and that he should say something about it. Or would that be a little to much? Considering what he had planned on talking about, he figured it best to not start things awkward between them. Oddly enough, with his focus on Ryou right now, he didn't feel that odd about being with Tomoyo....alone....on the weekend...at a cafe....and there he was back to awkward.
"No, no, not really. Don't worry about it."
Now that she was here, the two of them could finally get to talking about his situation. He knew this was a little bit odd, but he thought it odder to talk about such things over the phone (he was always more of a in person kind of guy anyway). Granted, most people would have thought this an odd way to about it to, but he just felt more comfortable about this in an odd way. Entering the door opened by Tomoyo, it didn't too long for them to get a table and ordered his own drink (he felt like he was going to need a lot; they were great excuses to not have to say something).
"Uhm, well, remember a while back you had asked me about Ryou and me because of those rumors at school?" he started off, calling back to the last time Tomoyo and him had sort of discussed this situation.
"Well, you see I sort of tried to ask her out and kind of got....shot down....No, I guess it wasn't shot down. It was more like 'wait and see' for an answer..."
Well, that was a vague way to explain the situation. Now time to focus on actually explaining why he had wanted Tomoyo's help on this. After all, she really had no reason right now to have come (except for possibly free food and drink) so he had better get moving. Taking a moment to take a deep breath to ensure less pauses due to nervousness, he kept going.
"Anyway, I had sort of hoped that maybe I could get some advice from you on what to do. After all, I'm really at a lost what to do, and I think we both know why asking Kyou about it would be a bad idea. I hope you don't mind all this, and I'll pay for anything you want to eat or drink for making you come out all htis way for this." he replied, trying to be polite and not sound like a completely pathetic about all this. Not that asking for advice was pathetic, but...actually he really just had no clue what to feel by this point. Hopefully a nice chat with Tomoyo would clear things up. Though by the way his luck had been recently there was a good chance it would just muddle things further. [/blockquote]

The two friends took their seats at a small round table and ordered their beverages. Once the waitress flitted away from their table, Kichiro spoke up.
"Uhm,” he started, “well, remember a while back you had asked me about Ryou and me because of those rumors at school?”
Tomoyo just stared for a second and then nodded, remembering what the boy was talking about. “Sure, I remember,”
Tomoyo affirmed. She had heard some things around the halls that the two of them were a couple, and one day she decided to ask him if those rumors were true (a little teasingly). Kichiro’s response was a flustered one, but was he now clarifying the situation? Had something new developed between Kichiro and Ryou? “What about it?” Tomoyo asked. Truth be told, Tomoyo was never a person who was crazy about gossip. In this particular situation, she was only listening because Kichiro had requested her assistance. Okay, so maybe it was a little interesting because he was a friend, and maybe she really did want to know more, but she wasn’t willing to pry more information out of Kichiro than he himself was willing to dish out. Kichiro explained that he tried asking Ryou out. When he said that, Tomoyo smiled, happy that he’d been courageous for a change. Too bad he’d gotten indirectly shot down, at least for the time being. “Anyway,” Kichiro said, circling the conversation back to the whole reason Tomoyo was here with him, “I had sort of hoped that maybe I could get some advice from you on what to do. After all, I'm really at a lost what to do.” She was the only one he could to go to for advice, seeing as how “asking Kyou about it would be a bad idea.” He offered to pay for anything she wanted from the cafe, but Tomoyo waved it off. “It’s fine, I don’t want you to pay for me,” she said. “But about your situation... I don’t really know much about relationships, seeing as how I’ve never been in one, but you should just invite her out on the weekend,” Tomoyo suggested, resting her chin on her hand. “It doesn’t even need to be only you two if that’s too awkward. You could invite her sister as well.” She assumed a group date would ease some of the nervousness one might have. Knowing Kichiro, he’d break down due to sheer anxiety about being alone with his crush. [/blockquote]

Well good, Tomoyo happened to remember a rumor about him. That would at least make things easier on him in terms of explaining the situation to her about him and Ryou. Granted, he really wasn’t sure how he should feel about there being a rumor about him and Ryou in the first place. Kyou seemed to be fine with it when it was last brought up, but he was always wary about her. He was really more concerned about Ryou’s reactions to it, but now that he had already asked her out and got shot down once it probably didn’t matter. It would only be a matter of time before rumors spread around to cancel the last batch of rumors about that….which would then be thrown into even more confusion with the current meeting he was having with Tomoyo. This was all just so confusing and annoying….but all he could really do was ignore it for now.
So with that, he explained the newfound situation between him and Ryou right now in hopes of getting some kind of advice. The look on her face at least told him Tomoyo was happy about the situation. For some odd reason that felt kind of nice to know there was someone who approved of the relationship. At least he wouldn’t have to deal with friends having issues with it, and that meant Tomoyo would be willing to actually help. That was brought a feeling of relief about the situation to him, though it really didn’t help relieve the feeling of embarrassment he had having called her out here to ask about dating advice. From the way Tomoyo started talking though, maybe she wasn’t exactly the right person to ask. Then again, even if she didn’t have experience in relationships, she was probably the most level-headed in their little group so she still probably offered the best advice.
Everything sounded all right, till she mentioned possibly inviting Kyou with them. Yeah…he wasn’t sure that was a great idea. If Kyou disapproved, it would obviously be bad to bring her. If she approved? Well, he had a feeling she’d probably pressure Ryou to be a bit more aggressive, or do the same to him. Over all, not really sure she would be the best to bring along on a date. Still, a group date wouldn’t be a bad idea if there was someone…else…he could…duh. Tomoyo was sitting right in front of him, the most level-headed in the group, and most informed on the situation (well, Kyou would be informed but again…Kyou).
”I guess that could work but…I’m not sure if Kyou would be the best idea to bring along being, well, her. I’m not sure what I’d be more afraid of to be honest; if she disapproves of it, or she approves of it. So, uhm….I’d rather have you come along if we had to bring someone. At the same time though…”
With that though, Kichiro actually turned serious for a moment. He knew what she was getting at with that comment; he was to awkward and nervous to actually be alone with a girl. It was understandable but…
”I-I’d like to actually try and have one date without having to resort to an escort to keep me from falling apart….” [/blockquote]

“I guess that could work, but... I’m not sure if Kyou would be the best idea to breing along being, well, her,” Kichiro said.
Although Tomoyo had thought a group date would be beneficial for Kichiro, he seemed to be reluctant and unsure about the suggestion. His problem didn’t seem to be the concept of a group date, but instead, the idea of Kyou being the third person.
“I’m not sure what I’d be more afraid of to be honest; if she disapproves of it, or she approves of it.”
The way he spoke of her could easily lead one to think he was afraid of the long-haired twin. At first, Tomoyo couldn’t understand why this would be the case, but as she thought more on Kyou’s personality and her protective nature of her younger twin sister, she could better sympathize with Kichiro’s dilemma. Kichiro even went as far as to say he’d prefer Tomoyo to be there instead of Kyou.
In the end however, Kichiro decided against the idea altogether. “I-I’d like to actually try and have one date without having to resort to an escort to keep me from falling apart...” were his words, which made Tomoyo re-analyze her previous suggestion.
Had she been too obvious in implying he probably wouldn’t be able to handle a one-on-one date? She still couldn’t imagine Kichiro being able to survive in such an environment like what he was trying to do, but...
“If you have enough determination to invite her someplace for a date and enough courage not to break down while you’re on that date, then by all means go for it,”
Tomoyo said supportively. “But to add on to that, I think a good first date idea would be a fun and involved one, with no need for awkward silences at a dinner table or anything similar to that.” Despite how little she knew about relationships, Tomoyo wasn’t completely in the dark about them; she’d talked to enough people to know the general gist of what made a good date good and a bad date bad. She was also speaking from common sense, which always seemed to help. “But... as for actual ideas, do you know if there’s anything Ryou really likes to do? A hobby of hers? You could figure something fun to do if you keep her interests in mind.” [/blockquote]

Haru was glad to see that Tomoyo didn’t press him on the possibility of a group date, although he didn’t get an answer on whether or not she would be willing to be the third on such a thing. However, he didn’t want to do that either cause that would be a bit unfair on her to get stuck as the third wheel in a date. If anything, that was a bigger reason why he didn’t like the idea; whoever was the third person, they’d either get sidelined if everything went right, or basically be his life support if he broke down. He couldn’t do that to someone, even if they were a friend willing to be a third wheel. Plus, he didn’t know how Ryou would feel about it either. Whatever the case was, he knew two things; he didn’t want to rely on it, and if he had to, it sure wasn’t going to be Kyou.
”Yeah, I have to agree going out for dinner wouldn’t work to well. Sitting alone, at a table, waiting on food….yeah, too much awkwardness there…”
As for ideas for where to go on a date, he really didn’t know. He had to agree with Tomoyo’s implication that a dinner date might be a bit much; besides, the food would give him excuses to not talk and he needed to work on talking more with, well, anyone really. Surprisingly enough he was fine with Tomoyo; maybe it was just her personality that was calming him? Whatever the case, he sat back and tried to think through what kind of hobbies Ryou had. Admittedly, that was harder than it looked; he unfortunately didn’t see her much outside of school. What could work for it….
”Well, I believe she likes fortunetelling. So what could we do with that…does inspire some gift ideas but not sure on activities we could do with that. Uhm, not to sound stereotypical, but maybe go out window shopping would work? She seems like she might enjoy that…..now you see why I was asking for help.” he replied with a nervous laughter.
While he tried to think of more things to do for a date, he figured it might be a good idea to take the attention off of him and Ryou and onto something else. Maybe not being put on the spot would calm him down, give him more thinking space and all that. Well, now was probably a good time as any to make an attempt at getting some payback for flustering him the last time they talked about this. Besides, even if she hasn’t been in a relationship, doesn’t mean she wasn’t thinking about one, right?
”Soooooo, uhm, to change the subject…was there anyone you’ve got an eye for? Y-you don’t have to answer if that seems to personal! I-I was just interested in knowing since…well…my love life always seems to be front page news around school. It’d be nice to not be the center of discussion for once.” he added, nervously laughing at his admittedly selfish reasons for doing it.

Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
She watched him lean back in his chair to think. It seemed hard for him to recall any of the younger Fujibayashi twin’s hobbies. Simple knowledge, like knowing what Ryou was interested in, escaped the boy. Did he not know her well enough or something? This would admittedly make the situation more complicated. Tomoyo was beginning to understand the difficulties Haru faced. If Haru and Ryou were friendlier and less on the level of mere acquaintances, it might have been easier for Haru to earn a “yes” from her. Perhaps this was the reason he was stuck with an unclear answer.
At the very least, Haru was able to think of something after a short moment’s worth of hesitation. Ryou was fond of fortune telling, he said. As soon as Tomoyo got excited, thinking they were finally nearing some concrete planning, Haru scrapped the idea, reasoning that fortune telling would be more suitable in regards to a gift idea instead of a date idea. Instead, he suggested window shopping, which in essence wasn’t a bad idea at all... in fact, Tomoyo didn’t see any potential problems with it.
She gave a nod of approval. “That actually sounds like a good idea, Kichiro.”
A date walking around the shopping district would let him learn more about Ryou’s interests, which was definitely a plus. And back on the subject of fortune telling, if she remembered correctly, wasn’t there a fortune telling game at the arcade? Unfortunately, Tomoyo hadn’t been able to bring up that point... ... Because she was having the tables turned on her. Metaphorically speaking, of course, due to the almost impossible odds of Haru being able to literally turn up any tables. Did Tomoyo have an eye for anyone? Kichiro’s question was simple, and despite having the topic suddenly directed at her, she didn’t become embarrassed or flustered. Her eyes became thoughtful as she considered the question. “Well...” Was she crushing on anyone? Tomoyo doubted it could be called that, since the feelings she felt for one young man in particular weren’t overly persistent. Thoughts of him hardly occupied much of her thought process during the day, but time spent with him was enjoyable. She often looked forward to those times, too. “I don’t exactly have an ‘eye for anyone’ right now, but I guess the feeling I have can be described as... interested?“ Her voice was honest and calm. She was answering the question seriously, analyzing her own feelings as she went. She hadn’t thought about the idea until Haru had brought it up. It was all a little confusing to think of those fine lines dividing emotions. Until recently, Tomoyo had never actually been interested in the idea of a relationship. The way she had been in middle school... there was no room in her heart for anyone, not even for her family. Her family life was in turmoil back then, and so for the longest time, her mother and father had never been a great example of what it meant to be a couple. But things were different now, both within her life and within her heart. His image entered her mind again. Was “interested” truly the correct word? Tomoyo couldn’t think of a better way to describe it. “But, if you were wondering, the guy in question is a senior, Okazaki Tomoya. You probably know him.” “Interested” was the feeling for when one wouldn’t mind the idea of being in a relationship with someone, right? And yet, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if it didn’t happen. That’s what it was for Tomoyo as she continued to look past Haru's head (while not particularly looking at anything), further analyzing her own feelings. If she knew this wasn't the normal thought process of a girl, she'd definitely be devastated... [/blockquote]

”You, you really think so?” Kichiro responded, surprised to find that apparently Tomoyo had found his idea not bad. Yeah, it might work out fine. Since he obviously wasn’t too sure on what exactly she liked outside of fortune telling, just hanging out shopping would be a good way to get an idea what she liked. He would have to make a note to bring some pencils and a notepad to keep track of what she seemed interested in as they went around…if of course she agreed to it. That would probably be the bigger issue at the moment so…that’s probably what he would need to work on if he wanted to even get to the stage of worrying about where to take her on a date…
Moving the topic onto Tomoyo, Kichiro was a little disappointed she didn’t start blushing or anything like that. Instead, she had remained calm and thoughtful on the topic. Darn, here he was hoping to gain at least a moment where he wasn’t the flustered one. Oh well, what had he been expecting? It was Tomoyo, probably the most calm and level headed person he had ever met. She was the voice of reason amongst the insanity that was Fuko and Kyou, so the fact she was remaining so calm at a moment like this shouldn’t have been surprising. At least the topic was off him for once; he could enjoy that much at least.
Still didn’t mean he wasn’t surprised when she said there was someone she was ‘interested’ in. Well, if Tomoyo was wanting to appear more feminine, having a crush would be a good way to go about it…although sounding so calm about it probably minimized the effect it would have. Then again, the way her language was showed maybe she wasn’t ‘’crushing’ on this guy, just had an interest in having a crush on this guy? Well, whatever the case was, it was at a lower level than a crush like he had with Ryou or Kotomi so…
”Okazaki Tomoya?”
Kichiro knew the guy. He was known as being a delinquent, especially when hanging around his friend Sunohara. Granted, from the few times he had met the guy he didn’t seem that bad, but it was interesting to find that Tomoyo was interested in such a guy. Was it just a case of the ‘all girls like bad boys’ sort of thing? Obviously Tomoyo would have known about his reputation; she wasn’t clueless after all.
”Uhm, yeah I know of him…mostly due to his reputation. I-I’ll admit, I’m a bit surprised to hear that you’re interested. Not that I’m questioning your choice in guys. From what I understand he really isn’t that bad of a guy but….I hope I’m not being that insulting saying this.” he replied, nervously in hopes of not insulting Tomoyo in her choice of men.

“Okazaki Tomoya?” It was evident that Haru knew him, simply judging by the inflection in his voice. At least, the way he repeated his name didn’t sound completely lost, nor was his face blank. It was easy to come to conclusions about how well a person knew someone else, merely by the mentioning of a name and a person’s facial expression in response to it. For example, at the mentioning of a very good friend, it would be common for the person’s face to suddenly light up. Or in Kichiro’s case, a rather surprised look had replaced his expectant one.
The reason for the current look on Haru’s face was simple; Tomoya had a reputation for being a slacker and a bad student -- a delinquent. Kichiro went on to claim he wasn’t questioning Tomoyo’s choice in guys, but it was blatantly obvious he had some concerns about Okazaki’s character. Tomoyo was well aware of his infamy, but she also held a firm belief that Okazaki was really and honestly a nice guy. Unfortunately, not everyone could see his good points. Nobody could blame Haru for his hesitation.
“It’s fine, you’re not being insulting,”
Tomoyo assured him, but the mere fact he brought up the idea of it possibly being insulting bothered her a little. “But, let’s talk about something else,” she said. It was getting embarrassing to stay on this topic for too long. While it had been easy for her to initially talk about it, lingering on the subject was uncomfortable and made her cheeks feel unusually warm. This was a lot like a girl, wasn’t it? She searched her mind for ideas for a shift in the conversation. A certain small girl made her way into Tomoyo’s thoughts. Fuko was the reason Kichiro and Tomoyo were as acquainted as they were. The two of them, Kichiro and Tomoyo, had agreed to visit Fuko’s sister, Ibuki Kouko, to clear up some of the questions they had surrounding Fuko’s situation. Since Tomoyo and Haru were already out here together, she wondered if it’d be a far walk to Kouko’s place. “Have you found out where Fuko’s sister lives?” Tomoyo asked. This was a complete turn from their previous conversation, but she was glad for that. The starfish-obsessed girl, although sweet, was somewhat of an enigma. She couldn’t go home, and so she was staying with the Fujibayashi twins. There were also rumors that she was a ghost, which of course seemed too impossible to be true, but the most rational way to clear up both of those questions would be to visit Kouko, the only relative of Fuko’s they knew of. Even with her reassuring him that he wasn’t being insulting, Kichiro couldn’t help but still feel like he had been insulting. Hopefully she would have just taken it as a comment coming from a concerned friend then trying to shoot down her choice in men. After all, for all his reputation Kichiro couldn’t really remember anything that bad that Tomoya had done; maybe a few pranks and slacker grades, but that wasn’t about it. At the very least, it was better off than saying she liked his friend Sunohara. Now that guy had a bit of a meaner reputation, although to a degree he sort of could see why the guy had gotten into a fight with the soccer team. He had heard those guys were asses, so he could sympathize that much. The rumors of him being a womanizing pervert and idiot? Not so much.
Seeing as the topic was starting to bother her though, Kichiro was fine moving the topic. Unlike Kyou, he wasn’t going to keep pressing her on a topic she was embarrassed about. Again, mostly due to being able to sympathize with the situation. Still, he was glad to not be the only one to have a love life worth discussing, and her attraction to Tomoya was an interesting one. Now he might actually have a reason worth keeping an eye on him. He was Tomoyo’s friend after all, so it was fine he was a little protective of her and wanted to make sure the guy she was interested in was worth being her crush, right?
Anyway, the topic was brought around to Fuko again, and whether he found out where she lived. Yeah, he had done that, and he had an idea what her point was going to be. Since they were already out, they could probably just visit her sister and see what they could learn. He had written down on a piece of paper in his wallet. He had planned on telling them about it Monday, but might as well get it out of the way.
”Oh, yeah, I have the address on me right now. But..”
At that moment the waitress arrived with the drinks. Since he hadn’t even looked at the menu he simply said they could take a few minutes more to decide. After a quick sip to wet his mouth a little (talking always dried him out a bit), he got back to business.
”Anyway, I guess while we eat we could try and figure out what to say. Obviously we can’t just go up to her sister and ask ‘Hey, is your sister a ghost running around the school?’ Especially if her sister’s in a coma. It might be a bit to personal a subject for her to talk about…especially since I doubt she’ll know who we are if she no longer works at the school.”

Tomoyo’s eyes lit up with the knowledge that Haru had the address to Kouko’s place and they were now so much closer to solving the mysteries surrounding Fuko. The only thing Tomoyo was worried about would be that they would be stuck with more questions after meeting Ibuki Kouko. As the saying goes, the more you learn, the less you know. However, she couldn’t imagine any more pressing questions than the ones they had now. She felt that once they knew the answers to those two questions, then they could face any other questions about Fuko with ease.
For now, they would just enjoy their snacks at the cafe. Tomoyo took a sip of her tea after thanking the waitress. While perusing the menu, she thought about what they could possibly say to Kouko when they were to meet. Haru was right; they would need to plan what to say in advance. Fuko’s circumstances were unusual, to say the least. It’d take the right kind of indirect questioning to get the answers they needed. To think about it in this manner felt like they were planning to do an interrogation...
She sat there, scanning the menu and still thinking of what they could say. Tomoyo knew they couldn’t ask anything directly about Fuko, because considering Fuko was supposed to be in the hospital, it would be impossible for them to know of her. They would have to ask something about Kouko herself. The wedding? That would work. But how would they have known about the wedding? They heard about it from Fuko... and Kouko left the school long enough ago that the final group students who had her as a teacher graduated last year.
After much more thought, Tomoyo finally felt that she had a good enough plan in her head that could actually work. “I have an idea,”
she announced, setting her menu down on the table. “We congratulate her on her wedding and explain we heard about it from another teacher...” How would they explain the reason they were so driven to find Kouko, a woman they had never met? Why did they care she was getting married? “... And we had made a pledge to say one nice thing to someone every day as part of a school project,” Tomoyo said. “And our person for the day happened to be her.” The idea sounded so much better in her head. Hearing it from her mouth was another story entirely. The actual idea of a school wide project like that was appealing, but it seemed extremely far-fetched once she thought about it again. Going to the lengths of tracking down a complete stranger just to say something nice to them seemed very much like a creepy case of stalking, but because Tomoyo couldn’t formulate any better ideas at the moment, she left it at that. If Haru had a problem with it, then he could express his own doubts. [/blockquote]

In an a moment of awkward silence, Haru started to look through the menu to see what there could be to get. He didn’t feel that hungry, so maybe just something small would work. About the smallest things on the menu were little cakes, but he didn’t know about getting a desert for lunch. Maybe there were some small sandwiches or something that he could get. Glancing every few seconds at Tomoyo, hoping she might say something to get them going again.
Admittedly he was also thinking about Fuko and her odd situation, and how to deal with her sister. After all, her sister didn’t know about them, so why would they be coming to congratulate her about her wedding. Strangers usually didn’t do such things, and more importantly, if Fuko was the only one to know about it, how did they find out about it? Telling Kouko right out they thought her sister was a ghost running around the school wouldn’t end well, would it?
Eventually Tomoyo spoke up with a suggestion that, to him, sounded a little…odd. The first part of it was fine, maybe add in something about a rumor since again, how could the teacher’s hear of it? The second part on the other hand sounded a little off. He had a feeling she just thought it sounded better in her head then out loud. There were a lot of flaws in it, but then again, knowing how Fuko was, good chance her sister might just fall for it. Still, they could probably think of some kind of story that was a little stronger on the off chance that Fuko’s sister was in fact a very sharp and intelligent person.
”Ehhhh, that second part sounds a little funny. Maybe…” he said, stopping for a second as he tried to think of something to say in response,”Maybe we could simply say that some of the teacher’s sent us to congratulate her on their behalf since, uhm, we’re some of the school’s most respected and upright students?”
Of course they were gonna need a cover of some sort, maybe a small little gift from the teacher’s to show their ‘congratulations.’ Well, there were the cakes in the café; maybe if they ordered two of them as a “Mr and Mrs” set of sorts, they could get them to go and give them to Kouko as a gift or something. Sweets would always be a good, simple gift to give someone right? Well, it was all he had for now.
”Maybe we can get her a cake and say the teacher’s wanted to give it to her to say congratulations or something?...this is gonna be a bit harder than I thought. After all, can’t just go up and say ‘Oh hey, we were wondering if your sister is a ghost’ right?” he said, head on the table in frustration…

Sakagami Tomoyo ______________________________________________________
Just as she expected, Kichiro felt the same way as she did about her idea; it sounded off. Tomoyo nodded slowly in agreement. It was disappointing, but she wasn’t one to be so easily discouraged. She glanced upward for a second, trying to brainstorm more possible plans. They needed something less farfetched and much less suspicious to tell Kouko. Being a terrible liar, this was excessively difficult.
“Maybe we could simply say that some of the teachers sent us to congratulate her on their behalf,” Haru proposed, “since, uhm, we’re some of the school’s most respected and upright students?”
Tomoyo considered it. The idea sounded decent. She couldn’t find any major faults beside the question of why the teachers wouldn’t go congratulate her in person instead of recruiting a pair of students to do the work for them, but something like that was a minor detail which wouldn’t break their logic in being there.
“Yeah, that sounds like it’ll work. I don’t see why we should need to buy her a cake, though,”
Tomoyo said, putting a finger to her chin to think. “... Although, it’d probably make it seem more sincere... because teachers wouldn’t just send us to her empty-handed.” She thought about it for a few seconds more, and then nodded firmly with approval. “Yeah, you’re right. Let’s do that.” Tomoyo, invigorated with the confidence of having a solid plan to work with, picked up the menu again and flipped the page to the section with cakes. How much money would they be spending? Would they need to buy an expensive cake? And they couldn’t just get a slice... could they? It was a good thing she brought her own money with her today. She and Kichiro would need to pool their money together if they wanted to buy a full cake. She looked over the top of her menu at him. “Hey, Kichiro, pick your head up. This will work,” she said. Now they only needed a way to bring Fuko up in their conversation with Kouko. That part was the most troubling. Tomoyo hadn’t understood why Kichiro looked so frustrated, but when she thought about it, it really was a problem. They only had the setup as of now. How would they get to the point of talking about Fuko without bringing up a possibly depressing topic for Kouko? “What we can do is congratulate her like you said, give her the cake, and then...” There really was no way to bring up Fuko without hitting on a sensitive topic. She figured they might as well say it plainly. “We’ll just ask her how her sister is doing. It’s obvious we would have heard about it from the teachers.” [/blockquote]

Whew, Tomoyo had thought his idea was sound. Well great, then that meant that they were one step closer to figuring out the mystery of Fuko. He also admit, it made him feel rather warm and fuzzy inside to have Tomoyo’s approval of his plan. Not really sure why…nah, he knew why. He didn’t have much of an ego, but he had just enough to get a sense of satisfaction when he was approved of by someone, especially in the case of a girl as pretty as Tomoyo was. Still, he couldn’t really focus on that right now, what with the stress of his situation with Ryou and the situation with Fuko. Was it sad that he thought the mystery of the possible ghost girl was easier to deal with than the uncertain relationship between him and Ryou? At least with Tomoyo’s encouragement, he felt better about it, taking his head off the table.
”Yeah, I guess it will. We’ll just need to think of something to say is all.”
Listening in on her suggestions, he guessed that just saying they heard it from the teacher’s would work. As long as she didn’t call them up to verify the story, they would probably be all right. Now then just came the issue of the cake. They could probably pool their money together to buy one, but that meant there would probably not be enough money to get something to eat here. Well, that threw out the lunch meeting plan he had made. Fuko better be grateful for all this they were going through for her. Not that he was mad, just frustrated; he didn’t mind doing all this since she was their friend after all.
”Let’s just hope she doesn’t call any of them to thank them then cause we’d have a lot of explaining to do,” he joked, hoping laughing would break up some of his frustration. Looking at the menu, he was said he was going to have to skip out on lunch; he had been so nervous earlier that he hadn’t eaten much for breakfast.
”So then, I guess we’ll have to split the cost of the cake then. Hopefully it’s not too much for a full one; a piece would seem a little insincere…”
He would make a note to ask the waitress about that whenever they came back; after all, people usually didn’t order full sized cakes from a small restaurant/café so it wasn’t on the menu.
