Classroom Crashers

May 6, 2003 12:00pmYawning loudly and dragging her tiny feet, Erina Yasuda trudged down the hallway, her exhaustion apparent in her limply hanging arms and unsteady steps. Having missed out on the hot spring trip (How on earth had she forgotten to sign up for something that sounded like so much fun?), she had determined to make her Golden Week as much fun as she could possibly manage.
And it had been.
She had gone jogging daily, spent time practicing volleyball, and even caught the train back to her old town for a couple days, catching up on gossip with friends and going out as much as possible. At the time, it had seemed like her energy would never run out. There was so much excitement constantly happening… Then came Monday. Why hadn't she slept more?
Barely aware of her surroundings, Erina tugged open the first classroom door she could reach and stumbled into the room. Her attempt at napping during class had been caught by the teacher, but it was lunchtime now. No one could scold her for sleeping here in this empty place, could they?
Dropping her bag on the floor without a second thought, she staggered over to a nearby chair… But collapsed to the floor before even reaching it, resting only her head and arms on the seat while the rest of her seemed content with the ground. Sleep claimed her quickly. So quickly, in fact, that she had no time to notice the other snoozing figure just a few seats away.

He awoke with a yawn as the sunlight played with his eyes - what time was it? How long had he been asleep? Questions to which the answers he cared little for. It had been a peaceful nap; no disturbing dreams, no pesky teachers to drag him away. With a sigh he glanced out the window for any signs of life: Nothing. Lunch was probably over at this point and going back to class was meaningless, if not pointless all together. It wasn't until he casually swept the room with little else to do that he realized he wasn't alone in the class. It had been at the edge of his peripheral vision...a body...laying on the floor...not moving...not more then a few meters beside him.
He leaped from his seat with a burst of adrenaline, clutching his chest in a panic. Why was there a body here?! Was she sleeping? Was she dead?! The consequences, if true, were so ridiculous he may very well go insane! He took a deep breath. And another. And another. With each breath his shock of discovery subsided, replaced only by a burning curiosity. He took one last breath for good measure and approached the body, unconsciously holding his breath, dreading what was waiting for him. It wasn't very big...was it a girl? Why did that hair style look so familiar? Oh no...
As he approached the girl his worst fears were confirmed. It was her. Though he had concluded she wasn't pulling an elaborate prank on him, her stories had been hard to swallow at the time. Now he believed it. Every word. He bent down in front of her to check for vital signs. With a great sigh of relief he realized she was breathing. Intelligent thought began to finally enter his mind as the fear evaporated, and he couldn't help but wonder just what on earth was she doing here? He poked her once. Twice. No signs of life.
He considered just leaving her, but an opportunity like this only came so often...he would have to risk it. With an effort he began to shake her, prodding her along with
"Oi...wake up..."

Erina watched from her tower with admiration as her prince fought valiantly against the men who had imprisoned her. She wasn’t quite sure why he was wearing a cow suit, but he was still rather cute and heroic, she thought.
“Oi… wake up…”
Confused, she cocked her head and called out in reply to her prince, “But I’m not sleeping!” As she did though, the world dissolved around her, and her bovine dreamboat vanished, replaced by the blurry outline of an oddly familiar face. Slowly, the room came into focus, though her own mind was still out of sorts, and she could do nothing but stare dazedly at the boy before her, head still resting sideways on her chair.
“Oka… zaki-sempai?” she mumbled, barely able to form the words, or even a coherent thought. It was surprising she could even remember his name under such conditions. “Why are… You’re my… cow…” She struggled to hold her eyes open, but they frequently fluttered shut as she spoke. Her mind was suspended somewhere between dream and reality, and as hard as she tried, she could make little sense of anything.
“I can’t… I… Nnnn”
Eyelids slowly fell shut as the first-year gave in to exhaustion once more, but she had clearly been pulled from the deep depths of unconsciousness she had fallen into previously. She mumbled and shifted quietly in her sleep, seeming slightly more alive than she had earlier.

Senpai? Hadn't he told her not to call him that? Or rather, hadn't he completely rejected the idea of being one? Though the obligatory term had caused backlash in the past, hearing it this time didn't seem to bother him...why was that?
Surprisingly, her words didn't end there, and she went on to...call him a cow. Her cow no less. He hung his head with a sigh of disappointment as the anticlimactic answer dashed any hope of an intelligent response. Why did he have to be a cow? What kind of dream involved cows anyway?! She was really struggling to stay awake... if he were wise he would leave the beast alone, allowing it to hibernate before it awoke to feast again...but unfortunately his own mind was hazed with the after effects of a long nap and his boredom seemed to be the only thing troubling him at the moment - perhaps some bait would work?
Raising his voice enough to pass the message along he pitched his voice high enough to be interpreted as panic and exclaimed, as convincingly as he could
"Ahh..Yasuda, you just slept through your exam!"
He held his breath awaiting an outburst...but there was no reaction, if anything she seemed to slump deeper into her slumber. Damn. It seemed the two of them had more in common then he cared to admit. Was she simply a delinquent too? Impossible...
When he had first met the girl he had immediately forgotten her name; fortunately for him she wasn't the type to be easily forgotten. As inane as her stories were they had the annoying habit of sticking to ones memory. That and the fact she nearly emptied his wallet.
"Yasuda-saaaaaaaaaan"
Nothing. The girl was a rock. It seemed no matter what he said, how he said it, or how loud it was said she wasn't about to wake up anytime soon. The lack of a response seemed to urge him on to greater efforts rather then stall his deadly quest. He had one more strategy to try...one he would likely regret immediately after utilizing it. Dropping his voice to a whisper he finally mumbled.
"Ramen Set..."

The world seemed a strange and incoherent blur as visions of her palace tower and the sounds of clashing swords intertwined with the distinct awareness that she was, in fact, half sprawled on the floor. It was a peculiar feeling, being in two places at once. However, Erina was too tired too question it or notice how bizarre it was. Somewhere in the distance though, it felt as if someone was calling out to her.
It was hard to make out the words, and they sounded like a garbled mess. Whatever it was, it could wait, she decided, and she turned her head away from the noise as her other self waved down at her prince as he victoriously made his way toward the tower.
But the noise continued, seeming to increase in volume. Oh, was that her name she had heard? Ah, but her prince was coming up the stairs now… He sure was handsome. She was pretty sure she’d never seen anyone in a cow suit who pulled it off quite so well…
“Ramen set...”
Erina’s head shot up and turned toward the voice, eyes still half shut, though she appeared much more aware of her surroundings than she had previously. She paused to stare at the speaker, her mind processing the last few moments, before a sense of recognition and understanding crossed her face. “Oh yeah… You were here, Okazaki-senpai… I forgot.”
She shook her head, pigtails swishing back and forth as she tried to wake herself up then, with a yawn, steadily pulled herself up off the floor and rubbed her eyes. “Is lunch over…? Oh no! I didn’t eat!” The girl perked up at this realization, apparently more distressed about skipping a meal than the possibility she had skipped a class.
"And I didn't even get to meet my prince, either!" Frowning, the first-year plopped down onto her chair, looking disappointed. He had been so close! Hmm... Though now that she thought about it clearly, that cow suit was kind of silly. Maybe he had come from a costume party? If the dream had continued, maybe they could have gone together.

Waking up at the sound of food? He had expected as much. Transitioning from unconscious to fully aware? Not so much. As her head popped up, nearly slamming into his nose, his reflexes luckily took over, his body making a hasty retreat...only to ultimately fall on his bum. As he stood up, rubbing himself off and recovering from the pain of falling on his gluteus maximus, he had to ponder her words for a moment - was she talking about when he had awoken her? Or when he was her cow? The last question didn't do him any favors, and instead resulting in ignoring what she had said all together. As she recovered from her trip to Farmville, he couldn't help but verbalize the only curious thought left burning in his mind,
"What were you doing on the floor?"
Ignored. Once again. He probably would have been more annoyed, had it not been for the unintentional omission of a proper response rather then an intentional one...that and the fact that he didn't expect a normal response. Still...she brought up a good point - the two of them had missed lunch...
But before he had a chance to follow up on her observation, hopefully delving into a remotely linear and logical conversation, she dashed any and all hopes of it by delving into her wayward dream once again. He wasn't particularly interested in hearing it, but, more likely then not, she would share anyway. Why not deliver a proper tsukkomi while he had the chance?
"Don't tell me he was a cow too."

What would she dress as at the costume party of a prince? It ought to be something impressive. Normally she’d have chosen something like a princess, but that wouldn’t stand out at all in a palace. Perhaps she should match her prince? She really didn’t think she could pull off the cow suit nearly as well though… A farmer then? That didn’t sound very cute…
“Don’t tell me he was a cow too.”
Erina jumped a bit, pulled out of the strange realms of her mind yet again by her senior. How had he known? Oh, he’d think she was silly, wouldn’t he? Her cheeks reddened ever so slightly, and she grinned at him sheepishly. “Well… I mean… I’m sure he had a good reason for being a cow!” She nodded firmly, convincing herself. It was her dream, so she could make up her own explanations! He had definitely come to ask her to attend a costume party with him! She had decided so!
“Oh, wait…”
Okazaki had said “too.” Who else was a cow? She looked puzzled for a moment. There hadn’t been anyone el-Oh! Her eyes lit up with realization, and she placed her fist on her palm. “That’s right… For a second… For a second, I thought you were my prince.” She began to giggle at this, looking over at the third year and picturing him sword-fighting in a cow costume. “Silly me~ You shouldn’t wake up girls having nice dreams!”
Her prince had seemed so cute as a cow, but thinking of Okazaki as a cow was simply comical. Though he’d probably look good as a prince in any other outfit…

He stared at her blankly as she not only attempted to rationally explain her dream, but simultaneously convince herself that whatever she had experienced was perfectly normal and, in fact, enjoyable. Following her train of thought was similar to following the equations the teacher wrote on the board - confusing, nonsensical, and pointless, why take the effort to decipher the whole thing if she was just going to solve it herself?
As nonsensical as it was he didn't have the will to stop her, because, while he would never admit it, he actually found the whole thing quite entertaining. It was similar to letting Sunohara run wild...except quieter, with less stupidity, and a pleasant feeling he could never attain with the blonde noisemaker. Why was that? Before he could ponder it he was hit with the dynamic announcement. He was...the cow prince!
In a pasture with grass for as far as the eye could see, there lived a cow. The cow bellowed "Moo" as she peacefully grazed, eating the greenest of grass the benevolent earth had to offer. What more could life possibly offer? But ho! On the horizon! What could it be?! Why it was the cow of royalty! "Moo" said the bull, "Moo" said the cow. As the two slowly grazed over to each other, there eyes finally met, the two mammals bellowing "Moo" in succession. One was a bull, a royal one at that, the other a cow, with the fairest of hides. They neared each other, both chomping away at the greenery below, peacefully approaching as their caution was thrown to the wind, curiosity winning over The two finally approached, mere inches away from each other, bowed heads preparing to ultimately engage in the most heated, desperate, and passionate act of...grazing. They then proceeded to do absolutely noth-
The sound of her voice broke through his thoughts as the images fizzled away. He responded with a quiet
"You call that a nice dream?"
In the first place he was certain girls never dreamed of cows...or if they did they would sooner describe it as dull over 'nice'. But knowing Yasuda...she likely had a way of making it interesting - a way that surely surpassed his own visionary prowess. Before she could derail the conversation into an analysis of the royal cow family tree he quickly changed the subject to one he might be able to more easily follow.
"Seems like lunch is over, ready to pay me back from before?"
A white lie. In truth, he had no idea what time it was - her presence had thoroughly distracted him from that.

Why wouldn’t the dream be nice? A prince had come to rescue her and take her to a costume party! Then again, Okazaki was a boy. Maybe he just didn’t understand a girl’s dreams. Would it have sounded cooler to him if she had mentioned the part where her prince chopped one of her captor’s arms off? Ahh, but that had been kind of gross… Still, a lot of boys liked stuff like that, didn’t they?
”Seems like lunch is over, ready to pay me back from before?”
Erina stared blankly at him for a moment, seemingly unable to comprehend his words. Pay him back? She didn’t remember owing anyone anything… Unless he meant for lunch that one time?
“Ah, but I thought I earned that!” she squealed in protest. Well, she had just walked into a pole, but… For whatever strange reason, Okazaki had accepted it in exchange for her meal. He was kind of weird.
“Um, and… I don’t have money,” she admitted shamefacedly. “I can walk into a pole again if you want me to though!” She gave him a desperate look, clenching her fists and holding them near her face. “I’ll even invite you to my picnic! You can be the third person ever invited!”
Yes, surely that should be enough to repay him… Well, she still didn’t think she really owed him anything, but he was her friend (At least, she thought so), and it had been nice of him to buy her food for practically nothing.
Her despairing expression reverted back to a cheerful smile, and she began to bounce on the balls of her feet.

It started with the blank face, likely the gears in her head slowly turning. He wasn't actually expecting her to pay him back, but he couldn't help but wonder, with such a monstrous appetite, how could she not have enough money for a meal or two? He wasn't about to forget his last experience with her eating habits - the endless orders, the dizzying bill, the empty wallet, oh the humanity! Quite frankly he was shocked such a small frame could hold it all in, did her parents only give her enough to sustain herself?...Smart parents.
Realization was next, followed by a reaction he had been training his whole life to withstand(Why else would he hang around that strange and silly blond haired youth?). Her sudden squeal was no match for his stone faced demeanor, but even he had difficulty remaining passive as she offered to slam into a pole again. The thought was certainty intriguing - walking around, deciding which pole to best throw herself at, how hard she should hit it to qualify...unfortunately he didn't have the heart to be so cruel. Damn. It was such a good idea too.
And finally, the silly but strangely functional solution. The invitation to the picnic was what, ironically, seemed to affect him the most. He hadn't realized it until now, but she was likely very popular among her peers. A picnic among friends was probably a common occurrence in her world. Her World. They had met twice now by chance, but would such chance meetings continue to occur? It was likely nobody suspected the senior delinquent and the innocent freshmen had any relation to each other, but when they did would she be affected by it? His reputation preceded him, he couldn't accept the invitation even if he wanted to.
The sudden change in her demeanor helped him to glaze over both his thoughts and the invitation with ease, allowing him to ask
"Well I don't have any money either, aren't you hungry? What are you going to do?"
He wasn't particularly hungry - or short on cash for that matter - but that didn't stop him from baiting her into action. Just what would she do to satisfy the endless abyss that was her stomach?

“Oh…”
Erina’s mood visibly dampened at Okazaki’s reply, and she began to twiddle her fingers. Of course it would have been nice if he could have bought her food again, but perhaps that really would have been pushing it. Well… She was going to make it up to him at her picnic! There would be lots of food there!
… But she needed food now.
“Um… um… Usually if you look around hard enough, someone has food!” She glanced about the room, as if hoping for other students to materialize around them, bearing gifts of snacks and edible goods. Seeing no one in the abandoned classroom, she turned back to the boy. “I’m sure we can find someone, and maybe they’ll share if we ask really, really nicely!” Tugging at Okazaki’s sleeve, she turned toward the door, motioning for him to follow. “Come on~!”
The freshman took two steps before stopping abruptly and pausing to stare ahead of her for several seconds, still holding on to her upperclassman. Her brow furrowed, and she turned her head to look up at Okazaki once again.
“Um… What time is it?”

He had come to expect her rainbow of emotions at this point - if she wasn't changing from one spectrum to the other in a span of 2 seconds then something was probably wrong.
Oi. I'm over here. Just where was she looking? The room remained silent as she looked for the food she so desperately sought. Was she really so hungry she would rob a fellow student out of there lunch? Maybe her friends were just really rich and kind people...but wouldn't that just make her a parasite?!
"Oh yeah, let's just go an-Oi, you were actually serious?!"
As he was inevitably dragged along he couldn't help but imagine the disaster that lay ahead.
A young, innocent Erina prancing down the hall until she eyes her victim - a shy freshmen boy. She stops him and asks, with wide eyes, pouted lips, rocking side to side and hands held together, "Excuse me...do you have any food I could eat? I'm terribly hungry..." The freshmen, confused, looks to her male companion, only to see an imperious, senior Okazaki, with raging red eyes and crossed arms, staring him down. "Eeeek! Here! Have it all!"
Geh...it would just be bullying freshmen out of there lunch. An image of a blond, winking idiot came to mind. Like he would reduce to that level! Before he could stop her though, she abruptly stopped and asked him a question she should have asked from the start.
"Like I would know! And why do we have to beg others for food?!"
It was official. She was the Boke. He was the Tsukkomi. [/blockquote]

“Ehhh? But I thought you were hungry.”
Okazaki sure was strange. Couldn’t he make up his mind? Finally dropping the boy’s sleeve, Erina brought her hand to her face and turned toward the door, considering the situation. The main problem here seemed to be the time. Had lunch ended? Worse yet, had school ended? At the very least, it was still bright out, so she hadn’t gone and slept into the evening.
“Do you think we slept through class?” she wondered. “Oh no! Does that mean I’m a bad kid now?” Erina had never been a top student, but she’d never been a bad student either. She had been present for morning classes. What would her peers think of her absence? Well… She could always explain to them later. No reason to panic!
“No, no! Of course not, I’m a good girl!” she reassured herself aloud. “I was just silly today… Eheh~” Looking back at her upperclassman, she pointed toward the door and smiled. “We can’t find out what time it is or get any food here, so let’s go now!”

He suppressed a frown as she acknowledged his hunger - strange, he wasn't often hungry after a nap. Was it just a coincidence that he always seem to be hungry when she was around? Yabai - at this rate she would convert him into a black hole as well!
As if on queue she responded soon after with a completely different question, and, yet again, before he could reply, she did it for him.
"No you're definitely, definitely a delinquent."
He muttered aloud, careful to keep his voice just low enough so she wouldn't clearly hear him. He wasn't ready to bring her down to his level yet...the disappointment on her face would only solidify the cloud of unrest that had unexpectedly formed in the back of his mind. She wouldn't be perceptive enough to realize what she had just implied - a notion that shouldn't have bothered him as much as it did.
He didn't have time dwell on his thoughts as, in a moment of clairvoyance he was sure, she convinced him, with a logical argument no less, to leave with her. It was true he had no idea what time it was, as he had only claimed lunch had passed on a hunch (why else would he be so hungry?), yet the only viable option seemed to simply buy them both food...no, not that. If he continued to enable her, her parasitic ways may never end...
"You lead. I'll follow."

“Yes, sir~!”
With a playful salute, she took hold of her upperclassman’s sleeve again and took a step forward, but came to another sudden halt before the door. “Um… Okazaki-sempai? What do we do if classes started?” Erina stared at the doorway, mildly uneasy. How did these kinds of situations work? She’d fallen asleep during school hours before, but that was always in class, not out of it!
“Do I just go to class and get in trouble?” she wondered. “Will I get in trouble if anyone sees me in the hall?” Tentatively, she reached forward and slid the door open a crack, leaning forward to peer out into the hall with a single brown pupil. “I don’t think I see anyone… Oh no! Then did lunch really end?” Eye still darting back and forth across the hall, the freshman was silent for a moment, but her slight panic began to subside as new determination bubbled up within her. Yes, it was clear to her now! Pulling back and swiftly sliding the door shut, she whirled around to face Okazaki.
“Okay, I got it! We have to become ninjas!” [/blockquote]
